How do you take those wonderful pictures?

I was wondering how people take such great pictures of thie cgc comics,I have seen real nice close up pictures of cgc books that they can get the entire case in the picture. How is that done? my scanner can't scan the entire case and most of the scanners i've seen, don't have a scanning bed long enough. Kevin

The Microtek V6UPL legal size scanner has been mentioned on numerous occasions in past threads. I believe it costs about $110 from buy.com.

That's what I use

Darryl, thecomicsheet, also uses the same scanning model from my recollection & showed us some full-sized scans in the past. Images seemed pretty sharp.

I've been satisfied with the Microtek legal size scanner. Setup was easy, plugged right in to my Windows XP machine and works fine.

A few random scans:

All my recent and current eBay auctions (eBay userid: thecomicsheet) have used this scanner.

I think I paid about $105 for it from one of the online stores.

I use 100 pixels per inch, 6 inches wide (600 pixels), and about 40 percent compression. The pictures come out about 110k in size. I don't like the files to get any bigger, or it takes too long for people with dial-up to download the pictures.

Hope that helps.

I'm trying to find it...seems like Buy.com does noit offer it anymore?

Anyone else get it from someplace else?

Along the same line..(no, not really), but once you scan a picture how are you able to post it inside a message? The FAQ says it has to come from a website, but some of the comics I've seen everyone post don't look like they come from website. They just look like scans uploaded into the message. Any advice? (Computer impaired over here.)

Some are inserted from host sites. When you are cruising websites ,like MHC, you can right click on the image, select properties and copy the address for the .jpg, .gif, .bmp file. then when posting here you type, click on the Image selection in the Instant UBB code section in the bottom right and Voila - you have an image inserted into your text. I hope this is what you were asking about

Here ya go Bruce...

web page

Thanks... but they are out of stock everywhere. I found a few used ones, but I'm not liking that idea. All the retailers on the link you provided are out, or no longer carry it.

I found a comparable Umax scanner for $175 (usb, legal size)... still looking though

Also, I think I figured out where everyone gets the scans of their own books. From E-Bay right? When they place a pic up of the book for sale?

I haven't broken down and bought the scanner yet. I guess I will someday but my Sony Mavica digital camera is doing the job for now and it's more versatile.

For example I can take pretty good pictures of multiple books that I think would be tough with a flatbed scanner. I shoot the pics at high res 1280 x whatever and the pictures generally come out between 100 and 200k. Then use photoshop to crop the images.

FYI: You can't find the Microtek ScanMaker V6UPL Flatbed Scanner anymore. It's been discontinued. I only found a used and refurbished model for $150.

I did some more research and found an alternative:

UMAX Astra 4000U legal scanner (mac/PC) USB for $175 + s/i

UMAX Astra 4000U info

Seems to be a good alternative from the specs, price and reviews.

I just bought one from ScannerOutlet 1 909 679-9389

I'll give a review when I test it out.The other reviews sound good.

IT SUCKS!.. THE LAMP IS WAY TOO BRIGHT ON THE UPPER 1/3 OF THE SCANNABLE AREA AND CASTS A HORRENDOUS GLARE ON CGC BOOKS. NOTHING HELPS! I sent it back and bought a better quality ($379) legal size Umax Powerlook 1000. I'll give that a review soon. I expect a much better result
