Is nobody here collecting Fox books ??

41 posts in this topic

I dont get it , I hardly see anyone talk about them, post about them, sell them, buy them or add them to their collection... confused-smiley-013.gif they are top on the list of books i need to get in 2007, or atleast the titles featuring GGA such as Zegra, Dagar, Jo-jo, All-top, etc. is there something im missing since almost all kindda books, especially GA get some puclicity around here, atleast occasionally confused-smiley-013.gif

no love for them here? imo many of them have great GGA, excellent covers (especially the bondage Kamen ones cloud9.gif) if you have them, pls post them flowerred.gif

"Is nobody here collecting Fox books??"

the question should be:

"Why is everyone collecting GGA books?" there are so many GA books out there but it seems most people (or a good majority) collect only the GGA covers. Why is that?

Speaking of Peds and fox, which pedigree has the most / best fox books in the collection.?. i know the answer allready is the awesome Church copies, but other than that? (since generally not in my reach crazy.gif) a few allentown which grade pretty high, and some Crippen books and Rockford books that generally aint the highest certified. Any peds im missing here ?

Probably Allentown, which is known for the high quality of its fox books, including keys. Larson also has many nice copies, especially if you don't mind a little foxing.

Yes, the Larson copy of Wonderworld Comics #3 is an absolutely gorgeous copy. cloud9.gif

This was one of the key Larson books mentioned by Pat Kochanek in his Larson article in the pedigree issue of CBM as one of the early keys being in high grade without any minor or major flaws.

And yes, I also believe the Allentowns (next to the Churches) would be the best pedigree when it comes to the Fox books. thumbsup2.gif

We are all waiting patiently for the Nelson/Stephen/Ritter pedigree book, which will have all of the information for all the major pedigrees. I wish that they would hurry up and get the darn thing published.

Remember reading about that on Matt N's site... yearh that will be a good read once it is out. Just figured that someone else (like the initial purchaser) would have published a list of the books in for instance the larson or Crippen books somewhere to potential buyers and that would have ended up to someone on the boards... guess i will have to be patient frustrated.gif

i don't collect them per se, but am trying to get at least one book out of every cgc recognized g.a. pedigree. altho' i try to get them to fit into my #1 niche [timelys], sometimes i gotta go outside. here's an allentown fox --so sorry about the crummy scan, just can't make my scanner do any good on a slab.

Billy;

I am sure this is a nice book although it's definitely hard to tell from your scan. 27_laughing.gif

Was this a recent pick-up or have you had this particular book for some time? What is the grade on this book since most of the Allentowns tend to be in the upper grade range in comparison to some of the other GA pedigrees?

Appears to be extremely tough to find Allentown books as the Fox copies have not shown up in the marketplace for several years now.

Lou,

recent pickup from a c'link focused auction. 9.0. figured allentown was gonna be one of the hardest, so i went at it hard when it was available. was pleased that i got for a bit less than whoever got it a year or so ago in a heritage signature auction.

893scratchchin-thumb.gifLooks like a 9.0 to me.

either the world's best grader in light of my scan, or a guy did a little research. either way, he's all over it.

It took years for me to get the list out of Joe T. It "cost" me two Centaurs. The list is about 98% accurate. (There are some Larsons not on the List by Joe. I have filled it in on those I knew of. The original list has grades and defects. I also have six "lost Larsons"- Larsons that I got from a school friend of Lamont's

I sent this material and more to Matt and Scott. The Allentown list exists as does the Windy City and post-first dibbs on the Church books lists. I am sure that Mark W. has the Rockford List and Steve and Jim have the Denver List and Jim the Nova Scotia .......another great collection was George O's Timelys with the Chicago/Sarno books.....jon

Note that the above is derived, primarily, from a list compiled by Joe Tricarichi and sent to Jon Berk.

The list is probably 98% accurate.

Books followed by an * are so-called “Lost Larsons” which were discovered by Jon Berk in 1994 following publication of the original article.

Jon;

Yes, sincere thanks for sharing the Larson list! thumbsup2.gif

I noticed that Lamont's collection was rather quite deep on the very early Fox books. Wow, just look at the Mystery Men, Wonderworld, Fantastic, Science, and Weird runs. All of the early issues and keys are there. Any idea what condition range the early Larson Fox books would be in on average?

Is it possible for you to edit the list to include the recall number or whatever the unique number was that went on each title?

Thanks again! thumbsup2.gifthumbsup2.gif

I could but it is a huge task. Joe T. graded each book.....his grades sometimes were off by a full grade....also the key thing on Larsons is WHITE pages....some may knock down more heavily for "foxing" (not a big deal for me if not on the cover. Now you can see why Steve C. has been after my Mystery Men 3 all these years. Although the Church copy probably TECHNICALLY grades out higher, the Larson is "whiter" and does not have the registration problem that appears of the covers of many MM3s.....

All this material has been shared with Scott Ritter for the book on pedigrees.

Many of the early Larsons (it all ended by September 1941) are quite nice....The reason i bumped into larsons (as i have said) is because they coincided with the particular era I was interested in....Finally not all books had a "call back" number ....only those that were distributed from Publisher News and not Omaha News.....

Remember as everyone considers the beauty of "pedigrees" (arf! arf!), that it is the size of early GA that makes these books "special"......Sorry full size GA with 64 pages grab me in a way that the "shurken" counter parts do not....

It really was a great deal for a dime when you think about it. My dad told me that when he was a kid, he would run errands for local business people, legitimate and not so legitimate and would use the money for candy, comic books and movies. He managed to hang on to one cardboard box of comics which I claimed when I was a kid and used for trading purposes. None of the books he kept were significant to me during the early sixties, they were mostly funny type books like Ace comics and some DC's, but no big issues, but it was still cool. Thsy survived him going off to war but didn't survive me trading them off for silver.

I wonder who has the Larson Funnies John Carter covers. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Or my much beloved Tarzan Single Series 20?

just wait 'til you get your hot little hands on the Central Valley copy, which you in fact will do in just about 6 weeks, 4 hours.
