My understanding is that Church didn't read all of the books he bought - and in fact, it would be pretty tough to do so... many months the guy was bringing home several hundred comics; he'd have been reading them in his sleep to keep up with the storylines! I agree with some of the other posters, I think he purchased them for artistic reference, and many he never even got around to opening.

 

...which might account for the stories of people opening certain Church books and hearing the "crackle" of a never-before-opened comic, 30-40 years after it was published.

 

As for the lack of funny animal titles among the Church collection, Rosanski theorized that they might have been in a separate room, and removed by Church's heirs before Rosanski made contact with them...
