Be forewarned, this is going to be a long post.....

Anytime you can get multiples of Overstreet, something's up, right? grin.gif

http://www.valiantcomics.com/valiant/overstreetmultiples.asp

(Warning: Valiant haters may not want to follow that link.) 27_laughing.gif

Let's take a look at the numbers shall we.....by the way when was the last time you updated your numbers?

All numbers based on eBay search of all available completed auctions that received a bid......

Legend: First price is Overstreet price. Second is average of eBay sales according to Valiantman. Third is multiple of Overstreet.

Your Top #10:

1. Chaos Effect Alpha RED $5.00 $90.93 18.2x

Actual: One copy sold on eBay for $62.99 on 25 Jul 10:31

2. Unity # 0 RED $3.00 $54.69 18.2x

Actual: Three copies sold for average of $32.33. One had to be listed twice.

3. Armorines # 0 STAND $2.50 $33.85 13.5x

Actual: One sold for $19.99 on 14 Jul 18:12.

4. Bloodshot # 51 Final Issue $2.50 $20.54 8.2x

Actual: One sold for $9.99 on 13 Jul 21:31. Another sold for $24.00 when grouped with #50.

5. Magnus Robot Fighter # 21 GOLD $2.50 $18.90 7.6x

Actual: 4 copies sold for average of $7.56. One didn't sell with opening bid of $11.99.

6. Armorines # 0 GOLD $2.50 $16.57 6.6x

Actual: One sold when bundled with signed by artist #0 for $20.51.

7. Harbinger # 0 PINK SENDAWAY $6.00 $36.69 6.1x

Actual: 4 sold for average of $23.88.

8. Turok: Dinosaur Hunter # 47 Final Issue $2.50 $14.72 5.9x

Actual: Only auction available was a run of 20 Turok NM to include 47; all for $9.95.

9. Chaos Effect Omega GOLD $5.00 $27.74 5.5x

Actual: One sold for $21.50.

10. Solar, Man of the Atom # 60 Final Issue $2.50 $13.16 5.3x

Actual: One sold for $9.00. Others available but only when grouped with other Valiants with high bid of $14.95 for last three issues.

Now lets look at some pre-Unity Valiants......

Harbinger # 1 First Issue (with coupon) $6.00 $25.84 4.3x

Actual: Two sold with average of $15.73. One was a CGC 9.2. Three did not sell to include on with 50 cent opening bid.

Harbinger # 4 (with coupon) $5.00 $15.65 3.1x

Actual: Two sold for average of $3.74.

Rai # 3 $6.00 $18.03 3x

Rai # 4 $6.00 $19.36 3.2x

Actual: One #3 CGC 9.6 sold for $61.99. No #4s available individually. Both available in groups and could be had for $10 each if containing either or both #3 or #4.

Solar, Man of the Atom # 10 FIRST PRINT $8.00 $16.21 2x

Actual: Two sold for average of $10.

Magnus Robot Fighter # 12 $8.00 $15.73 2x

Actual: One sold for 18.50. Two others that were bundled with #1 went for $13.50 and $18.50 respectively. Only issue sold individually that was above Valiantman's numbers.

Other notes.....

No copies of Magnus #4 (1st Rai) were sold. Two didn't meet minimum bid of $12.88.

Lot of nine Valiant last issues went for $28.00. Average of $3.11.

Lot of 8 Valiant variants (GOLD, PINK, etc.) when for $61.00. Average of $7.66.

I did not include copies that didn't sell in the numbers but highlighted a couple.

Valiants sell better when combined with other issues and generally sell when the opening bid is low.

They are not selling at the multiples indicated on Valiantman's website though. The numbers on his website have probably been tracked for a longer period of time than is available on eBay. If that is the case, then Valiants are dropping in price versus rising. Could be a bump generated by OSPG comment has worn off.....

Sorry for the length.....

Super research. I gave you five stars.

I think everyone would agree that the chance of making the most amount of money on a book (percentage wise) would be to buy $1 and $2 books and hope 10 years down the road they're worth $10 or more.

But if you even think about the GA books, the most expensive books are characters that are still around today. Most of the top books are obviously DC and Timely books. That's not just coincidence.

VALIANTMAN notes are in RED

Let's take a look at the numbers shall we.....by the way when was the last time you updated your numbers?

June

All numbers based on eBay search of all available completed auctions that received a bid......

Legend: First price is Overstreet price. Second is average of eBay sales according to Valiantman. Third is multiple of Overstreet.

Let me first state that you MUST also consider the shipping cost.

No one will pay $5 plus $4 shipping for a raw book with a crappy scan and

questionable grading accuracy when they could buy it in-person for $7.

If they're paying $9 to get the book into their hands, then they paid $9.

If you win an auction for $0.01 plus $4 shipping, how much was the item?

Your Top #10:

1. Chaos Effect Alpha RED $5.00 $90.93 18.2x

Actual: One copy sold on eBay for $62.99 on 25 Jul 10:31

This example was described in the auction as VF condition - & still received $62.99 + $4.50 shipping.

It's not even 10 years old.. and a VF goes for $65+???

The last NM copy seen on eBay (late June) sold for $83 before shipping.

2. Unity # 0 RED $3.00 $54.69 18.2x

Actual: Three copies sold for average of $32.33. One had to be listed twice.

One described as "outstanding condition" (whatever that is)

another described as "NM" and stated "I don't know about CGC standards"

3. Armorines # 0 STAND $2.50 $33.85 13.5x

Actual: One sold for $19.99 on 14 Jul 18:12.

4. Bloodshot # 51 Final Issue $2.50 $20.54 8.2x

Actual: One sold for $9.99 and $4 shipping on 13 Jul 21:31. Another sold for $24.00 before shipping when grouped with #50.

5. Magnus Robot Fighter # 21 GOLD $2.50 $18.90 7.6x

Actual: 4 copies sold for average of $7.56. One didn't sell with opening bid of $11.99.

There was a solid NM copy that sold for $15.50 plus $6 shipping.

6. Armorines # 0 GOLD $2.50 $16.57 6.6x

Actual: One sold when bundled with signed by artist #0 for $20.51.

7. Harbinger # 0 PINK SENDAWAY $6.00 $36.69 6.1x

Actual: 4 sold for average of $23.88 before shipping.

Another "outstanding condition" book + a self-described "VF/NM" in those.

8. Turok: Dinosaur Hunter # 47 Final Issue $2.50 $14.72 5.9x

Actual: Only auction available was a run of 20 Turok NM to include 47; all for $9.95.

Condition not stated, but auction alluded to VF issues...$6 for shipping.

9. Chaos Effect Omega GOLD $5.00 $27.74 5.5x

Actual: One sold for $21.50. ..and $5 more for shipping.

10. Solar, Man of the Atom # 60 Final Issue $2.50 $13.16 5.3x

Actual: One sold for $9.00 Described as VF-NM .

When you don't mention the coupon in the auction,

bidders assume that's it's been clipped out. (And they're usually right!)

...and the CGC 9.2 sold for $27... a 9.2!

Harbinger # 4 (with coupon) $5.00 $15.65 3.1x

Actual: Two sold for average of $3.74.

...another "outstanding" condition description, plus $4.50 average shipping

Rai # 3 $6.00 $18.03 3x

Rai # 4 $6.00 $19.36 3.2x

Actual: One #3 CGC 9.6 sold for $61.99. No #4s available individually. Both available in groups and could be had for $10 each if containing either or both #3 or #4. Groups with nothing else that could be had for $18 and $19 after shipping.

Solar, Man of the Atom # 10 FIRST PRINT $8.00 $16.21 2x

Actual: Two sold for average of $10. before shipping

Magnus Robot Fighter # 12 $8.00 $15.73 2x

Actual: One sold for 18.50. Two others that were bundled with #1 went for $13.50 and $18.50 respectively. Only issue sold individually that was above Valiantman's numbers. Still.. before shipping.

Other notes.....

No copies of Magnus #4 (1st Rai) were sold. Two didn't meet minimum bid of $12.88. You mean Magnus #5. Minimum bids were $17.83 including shipping.

I've been compiling these numbers for at least 3 years...

and people in JULY tend to look to conventions for a better deal.

I'm tired now. What was the point again?

If ASM#300 lists in Overstreet for $85, but sells in NM on eBay for $40 AFTER shipping...

then what should Chaos Effect Alpha Red list for in Overstreet when

it sells on Ebay for $62.99 before shipping in VF condition?

Currently, it lists in Overstreet for $5. 'Nuff said.

didn't we have this discussion...? I remember having to concede to you about the whole harbinger pink issue, and afterwards I know I've looked on ebay at these books... pre unity valiants in high grade are tough (although, I still maintain that there are some dealers with those books unwittingly in their dollar boxes and a few brick and mortar stores with them in their basements).

But I think there's no doubt that those books are undervalued in the guide.

actually, the discussion is more thorough than the one we had about the issue of pricing... I'm not on the side of thinking that valiants are going to become super scarce but in 20 years, I think there will be a base for these books, because everyone remembers these characters and will be one of the niche books... the pre unity books will be hard to find and will go beyond their $5-$6 overstreet guide value. I think there's somewhat of a fan base already, but as times go on and as people look for "rare" (or should I say less than common...) Valiants may become a little more in demand. Plus the pre unity and some unity valiants were really entertaining reads. Of course, i may be the only Ninjak fan left in existence.

Hey, I was using YOUR criteria described on YOUR website to compile numbers. You didn't mention once about shipping.

I may have missed a couple (Magnus Gold #21 is an example) but the vast majority of the issues were described as Outstanding, NM, or MINT.

I also didn't include the multiple titles that DIDN'T sell even when the starting bids were low or the lower prices realized when some of these issues were grouped together (which were the majority of what you'll find if you do a search).

And if I included all pre-Unity Valiants then we'd be having the discussion of why a large majority were selling below Overstreet.

Some Valiants DO sell over Overstreet. They are obviously off on the variant issues and some key issues. But they are spot-on or exaggerating the price on other pre-Unity issues. And it's curious that only one auction was found that exceeded your average price. You'd think that if your numbers were accurate (and I'm not disputing this) then you'd find more than one and even find a couple that were at your numbers. That wasn't the case.

Saying that the shipping is factored in is a cop-out in my opinion to justify your assertion of higher prices as that's not the impression you get from reading the website.

Cop out? Paying $5 plus $4 shipping for a "sight unseen" raw book

is paying $9 for the book. That's no cop out. That's a fact.

If you could find one locally (no shipping charge) for $8, you'd buy it instead.

The "average auction prices" listed on the page you referenced come

from the ValiantComics.com price guide.

http://www.valiantcomics.com/valiant/guide.asp

The "auction average" column not only mentions that it includes shipping,

but it also lists how many eBay sales were compiled to reach those averages.

Are the prices lower lately? Maybe a little. Am I saying books sell for $20

when they really sell for $5? No way... that's what Overstreet says.

Can we really say any of July or even coming Augusts figures would fit into the study simply because auction tend to decrease during those two months. I know there were many more pre unity auctions listed 2 months ago. Hell, I bought a number of Chaos Effect Omega Golds as well as Alpha Reds. 3 each to be exact 2 months back but they just have not been listed in quantity in July. Are less being posted and getting lower bids because its the summer? I dont think you can factor in July or August in the study. August will probably show less of them on auction. I tend to calculate year round figures but factor in Mid June, July, and August as separate from the rest of the year. Perhaps the best thing to do is figure if possible where they were during June, July, and August of last year. Probably hard to do.

So with that mindset, a Solar #60 is already over 1.5X guide ($3.85 Priority) even if the buyer wins with a bid of 1 cent. That's padding the numbers.....

The "auction average" column not only mentions that it includes shipping,

Well this is what it says on YOUR webpage:

Valiant Comics Sales at Multiples of Overstreet

While eBay.com auctions are a consistent place to find "good deals" on various comics at discount prices, there are a few Valiant comics that consistently sell for prices which are "above guide", related to Overstreet Annual price guide values.

The following Valiant comic books sell consistently for multiples of the Overstreet value.......

No mention whatsoever of shipping charges included. Also, you don't see publications such as CBG add shipping charges to their eBay stats (does the new OS Update?). Even when people on the forum quote eBay prices, you seldom see them add shipping to their totals. Why should this be any different?

Supa-hot books should reflect better than this....

No way! List Superman #500 for $0.01 with $3.85 shipping.

You won't get a single bid! Why not? No one wants to pay $3.86 for the book.

(You REALLY think $0.01 with $3.85 shipping is the same as paying

$0.01 for the book in person?)

EVERYONE who is buying a comic for the "best price" will factor in the

cost of shipping. It's "in the price of the book"... shipping.

I can't control what CBG or anybody else prints...but I can state a logical point.

$1 for a comic and $3 for shipping is paying $4 for a comic book.

That's all there is to it.

There's no need to say that a low-grade ASM #1 sells for $1,010 (with shipping)...

you're talking about shipping that's 1% of the sale price.

But when shipping is the majority or a significant percent of the sale price,

you better factor it in... because you know the buyer did.

There's a slight flaw with this arguement.

Most people buy (win) more than one book from a dealer specifically to make sure they don't pay $3 to ship one book. Yes, it could happen that you only win one book and have to pay the $3 to ship, but to automatically assume that every book sold for $1 plus $3 shipping means that the actual value of that book is $4 is clearly a false statement. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

I pretty much stopped bidding on CGC auctions less than $60 unless I thought I could win a few books at a time. I would win a book for $60 and then spend $8 to have it shipped insured. That adds 12.5% to the cost.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who tries to win multiple auctions from the same dealer to make sure shipping cost is not a huge percentage of the total cost.

How did this turn into a Valiant thread from what is super hot?

What my local shop was looking for or has sold out of...

Aspen Comics 1, 2, incentives and con variants

GI Joe VS Transformers #1 incentive

Dark Days 1

Criminal Macabre

Teen Titans 1

Born 1

Don't think they are SUPERHOT, but has had some heat in moving off the shelf, making them somewhat desirable for over cover price.

No, you're not. I thought Ninjak was great reading. I sure wish someone would pick up some of the Valiant characters and make them more visible(publish own comic or team-up with another popular hero).

Thats the information I was looking for. Just trying to figure out what has been moving at the shops.

Regarding the issue of shipping on comics and factoring in the $ 3 or $ 5 or $ 8.00.

You both have points!!! I believe much depends upon cost of the book as was mentioned. I know that I factor in the cost of the book if I am paying 5 cents for a book that is only worth $ 1.00 but then have to pay 3 or 5 dollars shipping. Sometimes we try and buy a grouping from one dealer as was mentioned but many times its impossible so I have to pay for the one book plus the shipping.

I believe the truth lies somewhere in between both of your arguments and there is room for both theories!!!
