What's the difference between a Spidey 200 with a regular UPC and 75 cents in square versus a crossed-out UPC with the 75 cents in a diamond?

Generally speaking, unless there are ONLY bar code lines in the cover box, it is a direct edition, sold mainly through comic stores. Examples of direct editions are a blank cover box(some refer to these at Whitman variants and think that they were ONLY sold in multi-packs), bar codes with a diagonal slash(these were also sold in Whitman packs), a picture(see many McFarlane issues), or the words Direct Edition. Newstand editions, usually sold in retail outlets or bookstores, also have the CCC logo meaning Curtis Circulation Company. There are 2 small C's within a large C. Another difference in some older issues is the price shape. As you noted, direct editions had the diamond price shape. Some also had the large M letter.

Doe anyone know the difference in distribution numbers? At that point in time I imagine it was pretty negligible; still newstand would have returns, but the DM was smaller then.
