I have never met John but I did e-mail him about a commission in the late 1990s. At the time I was getting different artists takes on the Hanna Barbara characters if they were created as serious characters. I wanted John to do his version of the Scooby Doo gang as a hard edged ghost hunting group (a gothic horror/Hellblazer type look).

 

Usually artists would throw out a price even if they had no clue of who the character was. Sometimes you would get some pretty half- stuff, because the artist's was just cranking it out for the cash. John answered in one sentence "I have no interest in doing that for any price." I appreciated his bluntness. He did offer to do a nude Abby for me.
