50's DC comics page count question

I just purchased a Superboy #34. It is cover dated July 1954 (pre code). My question is, how many pages were DC books of this period? The page count of this book is 40 pages and it doesn't look like it's missing any pages. All the story pages are there at least. I've never seen a 40 page book like this before. I figured that maybe 36 pages or 32 pages would be normal, but 40 seems kind of weird. Can anyone help?
