Description: Detective Kane received a six-month suspension from the New Eden Police Department for killing his partner. Kane's colleagues welcome him back with a present: two bullets with his name on them. Thus begins Kane, a terrific series written, drawn and self-published by Paul Grist from 1993 to 2001. (He dropped Kane to concentrate on Jack Staff, another of his creations.) The art is in high-contrast B&W, like Miller's Sin City, only cartoonier; Alex Toth loved the series. The stories mix the comic and the serious to great effect. One highlight is issue 22, a sly homage to Sin City featuring a dumb palooka with band-aids all over his face: "I'm not crazy. It's just that sometimes I get confused. That's why I have to take my tablets." Kane himself is haunted by the death of his partner, who was not what he seemed, and he is a sympathetic but not always likeable character. His new, female partner trusts him, mostly, although he doesn't make it easy. Then there's the New Eden crime boss, Oscar Darke, who proves a worthy, complex adversary."
