Confessions of an EBAY Noob

So I wanted to try to sell a comic book on Ebay....

After 12 years of buying on Ebay, I decided to try my hand at selling a comic book on it.

As of today, when you type in "comic book" into the Ebay search you get 1,681,076 results and when you add "CGC" you get ONLY 40,251 results!

Since this was purely a learning experience, I chose a book that I thought would garner some interest, but wouldn't be too upset if things went wrong. I put my Wolverine #1(1982) CGC-graded 6.0 up for sale with no reserve charging $10.00 for UPS ground shipping. Since ComicsPriceGuide.com rates this as a $9.00 book, I figure what could go wrong.

To my surprise, the final bid before $31.00! Since I paid $18.00 for it to get graded in the first place, I was happy to see it go for more than that! Add $10 to ship and a payment was received for $41.00.

Ah the shipping.....

I chose UPS because the store is right around the corner from my place and the post office wasn't.

I had bubble wrapped the book and gave it to the UPS store clerk and asked for his "recommendation on how to ship it UPS ground. He said he would take care of it and this is the result:

$5.47 for the UPS box

$5.47 for the shipping peanuts

$3.00 for MORE bubble wrap

$22.05 to ship UPS ground (!)

Total expense: $36.92

The shipping itself had a $5.25 "delivery area service charge" and a $1.71 fuel charge and they couldn't use my Ebay UPS account either for any discounts. Why did I even bother setting it up?

Ebay took $3.95 from the sale as a fee and presto, almost $41.00 gone.

Lesson learned!

I never knew that the Postal Service will send you a pack of 10 medium boxes to your house FOR FREE until I went on the website.

I am sure some of you are pros at this and are reading this shaking your head. Just thought I would share.

Happy Collecting!
