  1. So I went to a toy/comic show and a dealer was selling inventory -50 comics for $20. All were bagged and boarded and looked pretty prestine to me. I decided to get some raw ASM from the mid-300s and Uncanny X-men from the high 200s to low 300s. At .40 per book I guess I should be glad I wasn't buying them when they first came out since they are all over $1 cover price. This got me wondering, what would it cost to put together long runs of ASM and Uncanny X-men - maybe ASM 350-700 and X-Men 300-544. Anyone put together a long run recently? Is it even worth the cost other than the love of collecting?
  2. I love auctions..... With all the hype surrounding the latest Heritage Auction, I decided to tune in on the internet. I am amazed at the prices, but I am glad that collectors are putting money into something that they hopefully love. Admittedly, I did have one impulse purchase - The Walking Dead #1 CGC 9.8. What? Well, it seemed that the price was reasonable considering what I had seen on EBAY lately. Admittedly it isn't as much of a good deal when you add in the buyers premium, shipping, and sales tax. However, with so many premium lots of older books, I am hoping that folks just overlooked it in favor of getting to the older books. I know that many of you think that TWD is in a bubble, but I love the story and I think with the TV show, it has far greater legs that many give it credit for. If I had to do it all over again, I think I would have bid on the Thor #337 CGC 9.9 signed by Stan Lee. This is one of the first books I ever bought as a kid and it remains one of my all time favorites. Thanks for reading and happy collecting. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. 3. Anyone have a solid yet cheap way to ship CGC graded books?
  4. I first started collecting comics with Thor #337. Loved the Beta Ray Bill story! I notice whenever there is a cgc graded 337 it always goes for more than guide.
  5. Agents #6 cgc 9.8 auction just ended. The book that has the 1st appearance of the Walking Dead and supposedly there are only 2 9.8 books in the CGC registry (I haven't checked). Comicpriceguide.com values it at $28, but this is obviously off. It just sold on EBAY for $455.00. Yes, I was high bid at $202.50 with 8 minutes to go. The next bids were $450.00 and $455.00 One word...WOW! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.
  6. So I wanted to try to sell a comic book on Ebay.... After 12 years of buying on Ebay, I decided to try my hand at selling a comic book on it. As of today, when you type in "comic book" into the Ebay search you get 1,681,076 results and when you add "CGC" you get ONLY 40,251 results! Since this was purely a learning experience, I chose a book that I thought would garner some interest, but wouldn't be too upset if things went wrong. I put my Wolverine #1(1982) CGC-graded 6.0 up for sale with no reserve charging $10.00 for UPS ground shipping. Since ComicsPriceGuide.com rates this as a $9.00 book, I figure what could go wrong. To my surprise, the final bid before $31.00! Since I paid $18.00 for it to get graded in the first place, I was happy to see it go for more than that! Add $10 to ship and a payment was received for $41.00. Ah the shipping..... I chose UPS because the store is right around the corner from my place and the post office wasn't. I had bubble wrapped the book and gave it to the UPS store clerk and asked for his "recommendation on how to ship it UPS ground. He said he would take care of it and this is the result: $5.47 for the UPS box $5.47 for the shipping peanuts $3.00 for MORE bubble wrap $22.05 to ship UPS ground (!) Total expense: $36.92 The shipping itself had a $5.25 "delivery area service charge" and a $1.71 fuel charge and they couldn't use my Ebay UPS account either for any discounts. Why did I even bother setting it up? Ebay took $3.95 from the sale as a fee and presto, almost $41.00 gone. Lesson learned! I never knew that the Postal Service will send you a pack of 10 medium boxes to your house FOR FREE until I went on the website. I am sure some of you are pros at this and are reading this shaking your head. Just thought I would share. Happy Collecting! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here.
