And so the greatest collection of Xmen appearances ever assembled gets even better. Ok so maybe thats laying it on a little thick, but this beauty does further secure my top spot in the Xmen the Missing Years set. For those that dont keep up with my journals, Im a huge fan of Xmen appearances made outside their own mag during the time between teams...1970 to 1975. This is Avengers 88 in CGC 9.4 condition with White Pages. Now to share what I know about this issue...
This is the first time we see Professor X since Xmen 66...the last original Xmen story before the reprints began. He, in partnership with Reed Richards and Tony Stark, has created the means by which the Hulk will be securely contained until a cure can be found for his little anger problem...or so they believe, but with the big green guy you know how thats gonna turn out.
The story was written by Roy Thomas and conceptualized by notable science fiction author, Harlan Ellison, for which he received recognition on the cover...an occurrence that was quite uncommon for the time. The talented Sal Buscema provided the artwork. This is part one of a two part story Harlan did that concludes in Hulk 140 where the Hulks true love, Jarella, makes her first appearance.
The first page features a quote by weird fiction and horror author, H. P. Lovecraft...The most merciful thing in the world is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.
Til next time...
