I mean yeah, we’re not going to see massive film bumps like we used to but also these 3 in particular it’s not like we’ve not seen these characters in movies before… this is Venom 3, Deadpool 3 and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine’s been in what 10 movies now?

Hard to imagine a lot of First Appearance buyers were just on the fence about buying these books for the last 25 years watching Wolverine in film, but needed film 10 from Hugh to push them over the edge.

Interestingly, all three are dropping in price before the movies, usually, it`s after the movies. Looking to be a great time to be a collector these next few years for bronze, copper and modern superhero  comic books.

Here is a sample of the June Comic Link Featured Auction - Session 1 and first half of Session 2.   If I get around to rest of Session 2 I will add it here later.    Definitely a mix of really strong results (some actual crazy results) and some surprising soft sales.     Last vs 90 and Last vs 12 is starting to look a lot better across a lot of books.

One comic book that stood out for me that went for a low price was The Walking Dead #1 CGC 9.8 for $1900. I can`t remember the last time Walking Dead #1 CGC 9.8 went for under $2000? hm

And as noted above, these are 1970 dollars, not 2024 inflated dollars.

To put into the 1970`s perspective this was minimum wage in 1970.

    1970

    • U.S. minimum wage: $1.60
    • In 2020 dollars: $10.92

    https://www.gobankingrates.com/money/economy/minimum-wage-year-were-born/

So buying those hot artists and number 1s at 10 to 20 cents a piece and then selling them to the back market for a dollar to two dollars a piece was a great deal back then. Those comic book dealers in the know were cleaning up.

To be fair, as much as I don't love his art I have to acknowledge that his art to a significant degree defines 1990s art.  Despite his lack of technical ability he still brought something to the art form, helped sell millions of comics and attracted a lot of fans.

Agreed. He always has he is the creator of Deadpool. He is set for life at age 55.plus he has one of the best comic podcasts going now. Always at least an hour dive, not one of those cheap 10 minute quicky Youtube videos.

    Thoughts?

They are both the same, but sports cards have new hot multiple rookie card keys every year, while in comics not much since The Walking Dead #1 came out over 20 years ago. With sports cards that get more multiple hot rookie cards in 1 year or 2 years than comic books get hot keys in twenty years.

From the late '60s through my high school days, a magazine called Children's Digest reprinted Tin Tin stories, often with thirty pages or more per issue. The magazine's circulation was over 700,000.   I guess it was the best-selling comic magazine in the country. I wonder how many comic shops carried it

Mad Magazine might have bet it in sales, but it`s all about what they considered comic books back then? I guess Mad Magazine meant magazine and not comic book back then? That Children`s Digest I did hear with Tin Tin was good because my older cousins male and female said try it out and they had a subscription to it.

I’m sure my father saw Dracula too, but I guess the Frankenstein movie was more memorable to him.

I did find this tidbit on Wikipedia though:

wikipedia notes: When the film finally premiered at the Roxy Theatre in New York on Feb. 12, 1931, newspapers reported that members of the audiences fainted in shock at the horror on screen.

I guess pre-code horror movies. Frankenstein, Dracula, Mummy, King Kong, heck even Tarzan. So before pre-code horror comics. Movies got hit first.

    good long info here.

My father, long since passed, was born in 1922. He told me once that he saw Frankenstein in the theater when it was originally released. He remembered the scene where the monster walked out and you get to see him for the first time, people were literally screaming and covering their eyes! He did too. Modern society has become very jaded as to what we deem scary anymore.
