  1. Occasionally, two blimps would circle around the city. I worked on the ninth floor in the Medical Center facing Downtown Houston and we had a terrific view. Rigid dirigibles were huge compared to blimps. The stiff alloy structures of the Zeppelins were lifted by hydrogen which may have been a little less dense than helium but more dangerous.
  2. I remember buying all of those Superman and Batman annuals but I thought some of the covers were reprinted earlier than 1963. I will have to dig through my silver age collection to find them. A friend of mine also cut out the covers to save separately. I ended up with his collection of mini-covers and also purchased quite a few of those photos from Jerry Bails. I still have an album with photos of All Hero, More Fun, Adventure and Star Spangled comics. I'll pull them out for a picture if I can find them. The only microfilm that I purchased from Jerry was for Batman 1-5 which I read at the Eastern MIchigan University library in Ypsilanti back in 1965-66. It was a good read. Jerry also copied a lot of the early golden age stories for collectors. I still have the Green Lantern and Flash origin stories in fuzzy black and white. What else do you have in those memory cells? bb
  3. The artwork on the Australian edition is indeed improved. Huey, Dewey and Louie are much better. (thumbs u Perhaps Scrooge is considered more British since he is based on a Dickens' character? And Donald is more of a a US Navy type character. Scrooge was more popular in Duck Tales stories twenty years ago. Donald was still hindered by his Ducky voice. Were those cartoons still on the air in Australia.
  4. My daughter purchased a nice book for me. I picked up a copy of the USA book recently and enjoyed it so much, I put the All Winners on my Christmas list.
  5. I noticed that the Air Force comic I picked up had a story by Quinlan and illustrations by Flessel.
  6. Roy is a favorite of mine but when he wears a Nudie shirt, he resembles a Christmas tree ornament. I have several favorite Lone Ranger covers but I think this is his only Christmas cover. Am I wrong?
  7. That's so funny that you pinned that down.... So what is wrong with the way the condenser is hooked up? The condenser should cool the ethanol in the gas phase back to the liquid form and the condenser should have a continuous flow of water attached to it to obtain the cooling effect. The small erlenmeyer flask attached to the condenser cooling jacket would fill up very quickly. The second erlenmeyer flask attached at the end of the condenser is for collecting the distillate. Since it has C2H5OH written on it, which is the chemical formula for ethyl alcohol, I guess that is what they are trying to collect. I love this analysis.... I will never look at this comic cover the same again. And the girl in red has great legs...
  8. A couple of my favorites, like the Funny Animal cover, are up front and the missing Christmas Parade 5 is in the back. But they are all favorites and I enjoy them more than the Creepy and EC Christmas terror covers.

  10. I noticed that Archie was trying to distill a little alcohol on the cover. Unfortunately the condenser isn't hooked up correctly. I suspect temperature control is needed too but I am not an organic chemist. We usually get our lab alcohol as 200 proof.
  11. His style seems to work very well with teen comedy and it reminds me of art by Montana. Too bad he never got a shot at Archie.
  12. first of all, fantastic books everybody. I mean no disrespect, they are just beautiful. But, I can't help but note that bondage covers work better with damsels in distress IMO than with cowering sidekicks. I'm just sayin'. Your mileage may vary I've always liked that cover but I doubt if a hot iron could brand Toro's body since it would probably melt when he got close.
  13. This is still one of my favorites. Kelly did this cover as well as the Santa Claus covers and some of the four color Christmas covers, e.g. FC 178, were by Dan Gormley. I think many of the Fairy Tales covers were by someone other than Kelly.
  14. Robert Lesser is the current owner of the painting. Paul's work was available for a pretty cheap price back in the day. I wonder where all of those recreations are?
  15. A few good girl art books ended up in my collection box this week. I have been admiring the romance comic and the Abbott and Costello book for a while.
  16. Roly Poly 14 is quite rare. Though it's content isn't all that, the cover is really awesome. Like all rare books with classic covers, the prices really vary. I would think anything under $400 is a good buy. I think that Cover was a splash by Reinman first published in Pep. Bentley had pretty good splash panels by Reinman, Cooper and Montana. Here's another. Above is from Pep 31 and the Roly Poly cover is from Pep 32.
  17. I think I have that one but I like the Story Telling Time issues too.
  18. I just purchased a copy of Christmas Parade 5 but didn't find it for the group shot. Still missing issue 3.
  19. BB, my recollection is the Witch was the witch from Show White, not Trick or Treat. But I haven't read this issue in awhile. I have ordered the reprint from Amazon for the holiday season. I will post my copy momentarily as this book has been on my mind with the holiday season. Anyway you slice it one of the more memorable duck tales. I just read it again and you are right, duh, of course FC 203 predates Donald Duck 26. The story mentions Snow White as well. I guess the witches reminded me of each other, perhaps the nose or the wart....
