Designer Toast

This is Ryan Elliott's eBay account for those who are unaware. He's been going to most of the major cons buying books, upping the grade, and putting them in a PGX slab. I'm sure most will recall the Avengers 4 scam he tried to pull. Elliott tried selling a Hulk 1 in September to Terry's Comics and Harley - both wisely passed on it. It was Terry who told me this. I've said this before and think it worth repeating: PGX could have been an extremely successful business instead of being ran out of a residence on the fly with no actual major con presence or advertising. I think they're doing probably fifteen to twenty percent of what they could be doing in terms of business, all because a couple of people got their stupid on and got greedy. We've seen a lot of examples of how greed is ruining people in this hobby. How hard is it to honestly represent a book? It appears getting a measly few grand in your pocket quickly outweighs any logical, honest, long term thinking. Your reputation is everything; PGX and Ryan Elliott have earned the lowlife reputations they have. When was the last time any of you got kicked out of a dealer's booth because of your rep?

Trying to do this under the guise of parody wouldn't fly in court. As for damages, some of these bigger companies get nasty and will aggressively pursue anyone jacking their copyright(s). Fair Use was designed more to protect speech and education than anything else.

Royce, I understand what he did was pretty much a *fork* move, but he didn't renege on the deal did he? No. Did you get your money? Yes. Did he get the book? Yes. Did you give him a refund, even partial? No. Did he flip the book? Yes, it sucks he BS'd about the reason, but regardless if he said he was buying the book because he had a vision from God about it, the bottom line is you bought into it. I don't see a violation, other than that he sounds like a used extra heavy day tampon. Just saying... +1 It was a scumbag move, but not really applicable for the Hall of Shame the way the rules are laid out. Just getting the story out there will probably be enough to keep most people from ever wanting to deal with him. Thanks for the input. I'm more concerned that he lied throwing around the names of other boardies in an attempt to deceive me for a partial refund on the deal. I made the deal and that's that, but felt the deception warranted a discussion. Thanks again.

...and I agree. I was a kid who started reading comic books in the late 70s through the mid 90s. I started collecting again in 2004 or so. When I came to these boards, there were some people who did nothing but whine about how crappy moderns were - it got old quick, considering the amount of quality material out there now. I guess some people are just stuck in the past. Anyhow, I am seriously digging a lot more books than I thought I would.

Read issue five today and... Anyone saying Moderns suck is sticking his crack pipe in the wrong hole.

When I was a kid, I was a pretty serious artist and wanted to get into comics. I came up with the name of Designer Toast Studios when I was fourteen or so. A chemical accident resulted in nerve damage to my hands, and I quit drawing. My avatar is courtesy of Lebowski.
