  1. If I was the owner of the cover and Neal asked for 10$ to promote and encourage bidding,  I would consider it.  If I felt that Neal was trying to place doubt on its authenticity just so he could strong arm me into giving 10%+, I would tell him to pound sand.

I think that's what bothers me th most.  He is casting doubt on its authenticity without any basis.

I thought the ST page went low, as well. A very nice buy for someone.

I used to own that WD #1 page. That's a nice number considering the one crazy buyer who drove up the market is now gone, and that the property's peak is behind us. Had this sold previously at Comic Connect during their big WD auctions?

Not a bad return for the seller

  3. I have not shipped internationally in years.  Does anyone have advice?  The buyer wants to pay through Paypal and I think they require tracking.  However, it appears I would need global priority for tracking and that is like $100.  How do people usually handle this?  Is there another option?

The buyer looks to be legit.  He has quite a few pieces up on CAF.  He is in Italy.

I did a search for "International Shipping" but I didn't find anything.  Sorry if this topic has been discussed before.

That was the one I was hoping to get, but I was tapped out at 5500 for it. I was going to do 6K, but it blew right by that. I honestly don't know what fair value would be for that, so just kind of going off what it is worth for me.

I may regret not getting it, but I had not prepared myself for spending that much for it. I was surprised it went that high and hadn't planned on it. I thought 5500 was gonna nab it when I looked at it a few weeks back before the auction started. Of course I really have nothing to basde that on, I was just thinking of the popularity of the characters. Since Lady Death has been less mainstream in recent years and no longer hangs out with the Chaos characters like Evil Ernie.  It would've been a nice addition to the few Red Sonja and Vampirella pieces I have. Oh well - regrets already setting in hah.

In the focused Aug 2015 clink auction, that cover sold for $2250.

I’d lay off the vast majority of WD art at those prices. The show’s been on long enough now that any spill over effect to OA has taken effect by now. And prices seem to be leveling off or even going down now. Unless, of course, you really love the art! 😁

I'd be willing to bet that there are more people that love the art than worry about the ROI.  The more i think about it, the higher my estimate increases.  TWD, especially the first 48 issues, was amazing.

So, if you're going to base things on "number of complaints" you have to also look closely at their sales volume, number of artists represented, volume of inventory, etc. If you don't do that then you could be comparing "Bob's Discount Hammers" operating out of Bob's apartment selling 2 hammers a month on eBay to, say,  Home Depot....and wind up with an entirely wrong conclusion.

And we should REALLY be careful of conflating/equating "worse track record" with "questioned".

Can you name another rep that has run a 30-50% sale annually, covering the majority of his represented artists, for well over a decade?.....Can you name a rep that has done it once or for more than handful of artists? I ask because, from what I have seen here, that's where most of the questions come from. Other reps might have run a sale on 1 or 2 or a handful of artists, for a handful of pages, which is easy to manage. Spencer's tried to find a way to open the gates to everyone on almost everything. Folks who had not participated before had questions when it took weeks to sift through the orders (mostly because some creators hold onto the physical artwork and have to confirm with Spencer that they did not sell it at some convention or lost it or gave it away and failed to inform Spencer before), but anyone who's participated more than once realized that the trade off of waiting for order confirmation was well worth it for the massive discount on the art they wanted that wasn't available or offered anywhere else.

So, I posted simply to caution against looking at total number of complaints and not taking into account total volume

I am not basing things solely on number of complaints.  I am basing them on my experience as well.

The fact that he has a lot of volume does factor into my thinking.  I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt at the beginning.  I dealt with him in 2005 or 2006 and bought my beautiful Doomsday splash from him.  I will always be grateful for that.  But in 2007ish, I bought a GL page from him.  That transaction left me less than satisfied.  I didn't buy again from him until 2012.  I placed two orders within days of each other.  I paid twice for shipping because I knew he was busy and I didn't want to bother him with coordinating the two orders.  Besides, one order was before the sale and the other was after.  He sent one package and I thanked him.  I asked about my second order.  He said it was included in the first box.  I felt like he was accusing me of trying to rip him off.  I was shocked.  The missing art amounted to about 150 bucks.  The art I received was significantly more valuable.  After a couple of days the art arrived.  The whole time he couldn't find a record of the package.  In his last email, he talked about having a stern conversation with his assistant.  That kind of put me off.  If he had read my emails, he should have been able to track the package easily.

The reason I spoke out after all this time is because I can definitely see how miscommunication occurred.  The OP has communication issues.  I believe that Spencer does as well.  Putting both together is just a recipe for disaster.

All that said, I wouldn't completely rule out doing business with him again.  I think he is rude and disorganized but I do think he is honest as well.

What?!?  That's not my experience nor the experience of almost everyone I know.

First, he's not a dealer. He's a rep. There's a pretty big difference between the two...but that's the most important point. That would be the next one.

I am just mentioning how often people have complained on these boards.  I had a bad experience but almost everyone I know has not had a bad experience with Spencer.  So I will agree with you on that point.

i will also agree with you that he is not a dealer.  He is a rep.  My apologies.  But now that I think about it, I do not know of a rep who has a worse track record on these boards than Spencer.  Feel free to enlighten me but has anyone other rep been questioned as much as Spencer?  I understand that he has another job and he is trying the best he can.  He may be hiring more help...  but there are still plenty of people who are left unhappy with their experience.

C'mon, this has got to be way off. Second worst rep? If you want to say horribly outdated website, that really can't be argued. Slow to respond (at times) due to workload? Sure. But as a person he's extremely cool and as far as business he seems very honorable to me. Never heard of him screwing anyone over, although many other big dealers- some with reps as nice guys- have done some flat out devious, low integrity/borderline criminal nonsense. Done many deals with Spencer and he is very fair, trustworthy, and reasonable IMO.

I never questioned his honor.  I just pointed out how often people have complained on these boards.  Maybe it was lack of communication.  Maybe website issues.  Maybe inventory issues.  But he definitely appears to get more complaints than anyone else other than coollines.  Am I wrong?  Maybe other people's complains don't mirror your experience but it is hard to deny that many are left dissatisfied after dealing with him.

  9. We do tend to get these threads about Spencer fairly often though.  Of the big dealers, he has to have the second worst reputation, right?  I had a misunderstanding with him in 2013.  Honestly, I feel like it was because of his lack of diligence on his part.  However, he came across accusingly and I felt like I had to defend myself.  It wasn't a position I liked to be in.  So, I just stopped doing business with him.

As a Jim Lee fan, The only Jim Lee art worth spending stupid money on, would be on his Uncanny X-Men/X-Men days. Everything thing else he's done can go up in flames, it's all over priced and people are crazy enough to keep paying his prices for art that looks like every other design he's done a 1000 times already.

Hush won't go up in flames...  I am not saying it is a surefire investment.  But it won't go up in flames.
