  1. That's disheartening But pretty common. And I was seriously thinking of increasing my bid on the book here. Or am I already the idiotic high bidder here? If so, somebody else better come along and out bid me on this copy then.
  2. Yes. Too rich for my dumb blood Yes, on a more serious note though, if you combine Fox books with classic covers which are both supposedly red hot in today's marketplace, you usually end up with record prices at that particular condition grade level. And sometimes even silly prices, but probably not in this particular case. I guess we'll just have to wait and see in another hour though.
  3. Well, looks like the Adventure 40 didn't produce very happy results for the consignor as it went for something like 25% below guide for a CGC 7.0 graded copy. Looks like the Bat 121 with the first Mr. freeze should do alright though since it is already at $18K+: http://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=731955 Looks like a pretty white cover to me, but at a very expensive price.
  4. It was a bunch of ugly pennies, and I probably should have waited as Harvey is costing us a pretty good chunk of loot. Well, you can always go to your own private Church and I am sure that it will provide the solution to much of your financial concerns. Seriously though, I hope all of you guys down in the SE makes a speedy recovery from Harvey and Irma.
  5. For all of you Fox aficionados......any guesses as to where this copy of Fantastic 3 will end up at in today's CC auction: http://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=732552 Old label goodness, although I believe it has been sitting at this $25K mark now for the past several days. Maybe the more serious bidders will show their true colors only when the 3-minute bell rings.
  6. That's a nice and bright looking Church copy that must have cost a pretty penny. Good to see that you are buying so soon since I though you might be taking a break and regrouping after all of your big winnings in the Berk Auction a few months ago.
  7. I got a better idea......why don't we simply split the difference and just give it to BB 57 then and end this silly little squabble.
  8. With CC's extended 3-minute bidding time period that they utilized for their auction format, the need to do advanced bidding is definitely not that critical since I tend to use it more as a tracking bid or an expression of interest for a book that I may want to bid on in the end. Was watching parts of the auction yesterday, however, and didn't really notice much of a flurry of extended bidding which was certainly not the case with the books from the Jon Berk auction. I guess it has a lot to do with the quality of the books that are being auctioned off.
  9. +1, two spectacular books! +2 Absolutely love the array of various colours on these 2 covers. Will also have to admit that the bad girl and the damsels in bondage and distress doesn't hurt the 2 covers either.
  10. Rick; Instead of elevating which still sounds like a pretty risky proposition with these unexpected storm surges down there, you should just ship all of your AMF Centaurs to me and I will ensure they stay warm and dry up here in my personal collection. Seriously though, hope everybody stays safe and dry down there in Florida.
  11. Sole highest graded will always command the higher price. In general, you will find that subsequent 9.8's will sell for significantly less. Assuming this copy sells for 40K, if a couple more 9.8's hit the market, I think 20 -30K would be the range. It's even worse when the sole highest graded is eclipsed by a yet higher grade. Of course a movie or something of that sort changes the dynamics and 40K could seem cheap. To each their own, I would have to say then. I guess I am really much more of a long time collector of comic books years before CGC was even a thought in anybody's mind, as opposed to a CGC generational type of comic book collector. As such, I would much rather buy a book where the actual value is coming from the underlying comic book itself, as opposed to one where the underlying value is derived mainly from the big number on the top left hand corner of the slab. Being an old school type of collector, I would certainly prefer to purchase a book such as a 'Tec 31/38 or more recently AF 15 whereby subsequent sales of other copies in all condition grades (i.e. either lower, higher, or equivalent) will only serve to not only reinforce the price which you had paid for your copy, but also help to lift prices of all copies even further up. I would not want to be in a position whereby the presence of another equivalent graded or possibly higher graded copy would only serve to devalue your copy because at that point, are you not really buying and collecting a CGC label as opposed to buying and collecting a book. Paying a horrendous premium just to have the so-called sole highest graded copy seems to carry substantial inherent financial risk as this additional value would appear to be of a transitory nature only, since it would disappear as soon as another equivalent or higher graded copy comes along. It's almost akin to purchasing a ticking time bomb, since more than likely another copy will come along sooner or later. According to what board members says here, I guess this would probably explain why Hulk 181's have increased substantially in price in all grades across the entire condition spectrum, with the exception of the 9.8 graded copies which have apparently dropped down in value over the past few years.
  12. Looks like there's nothing really to write home about with all 5 of these AF 15 sales on CC's auction site today. I guess it goes to show that this book only really performs when it presents nicely, especially when relative to its assigned grade.
  13. A good idea but you to have wait 6 months(or whenever the buyer pays in full) Does 6 months really make that much of a difference if you are a long term collector who's had the books for years or possibly even decades. Now, if you are a flipper or speculator who's hopping from book to book without having any real money, yeah that would be an issue then.
  14. Old label slab with no Marvel chipping and definitely nicer than the CGC 5.5 with Marvel chipping that just sold on CC. Not sure if I would want to pay an extra $80K for a lower graded copy, although it's quite possible that might be an undergraded copy since it's old label goodness.
  15. Would these be the ultra EP restored books that are done by IGB as they appear to be pretty high grade? If so, I guess they must be changing the auction venue since I believe they used to auction all of their books through CC.
  16. +1 I believe this is the best answer to this little squabble between BB 54 and BB 60.
  17. Well, it looks like he has some nice ungraded books up there and best of all, they are in a true auction format with an actual end date. Much better than 99% of the other comic book listings which tend to be in BIN auction formats with really high prices that seems to sit on eBay forever.
  18. Looks like the CGC 8.0 copy of Pep 22 has booted the CGC 9.6 copy of TOS 39 out of top spot in the CC auction ending this week: http://www.comicconnect.com/bookSearch.php?searchType=advanced&listing_type=event&quick_sort=price_desc&pageNum=0&pageSize=25 Wonder which one of these 2 books will end up taking the top spot by the time it's all said and done.
  19. No, I'll take them as long as Richard puts in a good hefty discount for all that nasty writing on the cover. Being the nice guy that I am, I wouldn't want you to be saddled with all of those books with defaced covers.
  20. That is an amazing price - with so much time left, you would think it has a lot of room to move. I bumped into Magik today at the local con and mentioned to him that this CGC 9.8 copy of BB 54 might hit $40K by the time it's all said and done. When he asked what BB 54 was and I mentioned the first appearance of Teen Titans, he scoffed at the idea that somebody would pay this kind of money for a seemingly second rate kid group like the Teen Titans. I would tend to agree with him, but probably best to reserve judgement until I see what kind of prices a subsequent second or third copy of BB 54 in 9.8 graded condition will end up going for. If the book is as good as you guys are thinking, then subsequent copies in equivalent or higher grades should continue to increase and reinforce whatever price this copy will be going for.
  21. You too huh...I feel like he tells a lot of people this..."one day" +1 Actually, I think you guys are being way too optimistic here as it's really more likely going to be "one of these years" or "one of these decades". I bumped into Pat today at the local con and asked him about the 3 books which he was going to pulled out for me since last year. Not surprisingly, he said that he still hadn't run across them yet as he was too busy buying books from walk-in sellers to his store. In fact, it's been so long that it took me awhile to even remember what the 3 books were. Well, I guess it'll be one of these years or decades since he said that he's got it marked down somewhere and the books won't be going to anybody else.
  22. Nothing new at all as I believe they've always had the finalizer in place ever since the start of CGC, or that's what I have always thought.
  23. +1 Most definitely, and also keep your collections dry and out of the flood waters at the same time.
  24. We'll have to agree to disagree. BB54 has been a high value book for a long time. I don't think your argument explains a 1,000 copy disparity in slabbed copies. As for NM98, I was just using your examples. No problems as we are just here to have friendly discussions on these books anyways. I actually used to have an uber HG copy of BB 54 in my personal collection, but ended up selling it to one of Fishler's customers along with a really nice copy of Adventure 260 back in the mid 90's. Not sure how Steve knew I had it, but it sure made my better half happy at the time. Definitely doesn't look like the best move to have made based upon today's marketplace.
