Ok, I can see it now @grendelbo So, they've taken a photo of this slabbed comic on a red backing and then cropped it to have a different background. Very deceiving.

Unless the listing says something about a special "red CGC case" then I don't see this as deceiving. They just took a picture of their slab on a red table or something. I take pictures of mine on a granite table but that doesn't mean I'm trying to pass my books off as having a special Granite CGC Case. Does that make sense?

Hey THIS blew over too... NOT done by Eclipse (who was already out of business), but a retailer.

I didn't know about this one, but it pisses me off just as much. I've seen others compare this C2E2 issue to the Wizard First controversy years ago, but at least CGC gave those books a new label separating them from the normal/traditional blue label. These books make it feel like CGC is trying to dupe us.

  3. HI all! I don't want to be the guy who cracks, presses, and regrades every book I buy, but I was seriously wondering about how this book graded so low. Please let me know what you think. I focused on getting photos of the spine due to the grader's notes.

Graders notes were: very light creasing to cover, very light stress lines to cover

Let me know if revealing the current grade would help. Thanks!

  4. I recently got a signed Ultimate Fallout #4 that I don't think has ever been pressed because it has that polybag crease along the back cover. I was hoping to resubmit to CGC after getting pressed but it sounds like CCS is the only one allowed to do that? I'm fine going with CCS if that's the only option, but they have massive TATs right now and I've seen some... mixed results from them.

Top edge wear, slight blunting of the corners, creasing w/color break at the top left corner, moderate spine stress w/color break, top staple off center, staple tears, what appears to be a dust shadow by the spine on the rear cover.

The book presents nicely overall, however, IMO, it is the moderate spine stress that prevents this book from being a higher grade, better than a VG/FN 5.0 but the creasing prevents it from being a FN 6.0, so...

    FN- 5.5

6.0 FINE (FN):  Back to Top
An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose.

5.5 FINE- (FN-):  Back to Top
Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount.

    5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN):  Back to Top
An above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.

Thanks! That's actually a bit better than I thought. Colors look great on and in this book so it's really a shame about the left side of the front cover :/

9.4 .. clean and press that baby! Who knows.. you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. If they wreck it you can go buy another one .. they’re not that expensive. If it comes back 9.8 you hit the jackpot. My 2c

Yeah this is how I feel. Sinister is one of my favorite villains but I got this book at a steal. I trust my presser as it’s my LCS owner. We’ll see what happens!

I do not think a totally arbitrary grade is the way to go, but if you're going to give a grade, and you're not good at it, you should probably go low.  Otherwise I am quite sure you will have issues when people disagree--and a surprising number of people think raw books should be perfect, even though they aren't remotely paying CGC prices.

Yeah arbitrary was bad word choice. But I've always felt like giving tons of photos meant more than a grade that may be inaccurate.

You refused to put a grade on the book and said that your listing showed the untrimmed overhang.

You posted his picture which clearly shows the overhang that he sent you.

Why didn't you post the picture from your listing that shows the overhang?

This forum has made me painfully aware that I am horrible at grading comics. So honest question here: would it be better for me to put a grade on a book I'm selling knowing fully well that it may be wrong? Some books I think are F/VF end up being VG. If so, I will go edit some of my ebay listings.

Unsurprisingly, I disagree with most of your opinions here.

    1.  There's specifically an option for not accepting returns.  That's all I meant.  I selected that option, so the listing says Seller Does Not Accept Returns.  Now, maybe you mean it doesn't matter as a practical matter.  As far as I know, that's not entirely true.  For example, if they message you and say they just don't want it anymore.  I am pretty sure if you have no returns listed, they won't get a return.  Now they can obviously lie and say it doesn't match pictures or whatever, but I am pretty sure saying "you must accept returns" as a blanket statement is factually incorrect.

    2.  I'm a newbie, as most people who read this forum know.  I dealt almost exclusively in CGC 9.8s for most of my time in the hobby.  Now that I look at raws, I constantly see people write "Mint" or "9.8--CGC it!" or promise a particular grade.  Usually I open those and right away see a dozen large color-breaking ticks and I'm like: what?  But I digress.  I respect sellers who just put up pics and say "I have no idea what this is, decide for yourself."  Maybe they make less money, but that's fine.  I kind of split the difference in that I give an estimate and point out a few things (sometimes), but I want it to be very clear that it's on the buyer to do his diligence, or ask questions, or ask for additional pictures, etc, because I don't want to get in a debate when someone invariably disagrees with my assessment.

    3.  I gave them a full refund before even creating this thread.  The purpose of the post, as I have written twice now on this page, beyond venting, was to get a second opinion on whether the defect in question arose during production (as I think) or at the hands of an unscrupulous aftermarket trimmer (as the Buyer thinks--I mean it's possible--maybe Stevie Wonder got into comic book restoration).  That will determine how I do a future listing--if I bother to list it again at all.

I'm new to this but I agree with you 100%. I'm not a professional grader so why would I pretend to be? I could just go around calling everything VF or NM and call it a day. I feel like that is where you get into trouble, not the other way around. Say I'm selling a book and calling it a 6.0 and after the buyer gets it and CGCs it comes back as a 5.0. Do they get their money back because I put down an inaccurate grade?

Especially in this situation where the defect was literally on the listing photos I feel like the buyer doesn't have a leg to stand on. They saw the defect and chose to purchase it knowing exactly what the book looked like.

From what I could see, 4.5-5.0

Out of curiosity, what grade did this other company give it?

The other company gave it a 4.5 mainly for the stress mark along the spine. The seller is trying to convince me that it was undergraded and that this company is harsher than CGC. If I bought it I was planning on sending it into CGC for a regrade anyways lol.

It'll need a real good C&P, but the edges and corners are good. On the front cover, the upper left corner edge wear and the color-breaking crease on the bottom right are moderate defects. If the soiled back cover is cleaned then it'll grade higher. So long as that's not water damage. IMO

Thanks! I think I will send this in to get graded in my next batch whenever that is. And yeah it’s definitely not water damage. My Marvel Super Heroes 13 on the other hand… oof.

Probably about a 5.5/6.0 as is. If it can be C&P really good, I can see a 7.0.

    Thanks for posting.

Wow a press and clean can make that big of a difference? I’m guessing it’s the back cover and upper left front cover taking the most off of this right? Sorry I’m new at the whole grading thing!
