  1. Hello old friends :) I have been out of the collecting game for the last year or two, but still have many of my best books. I have been wondering about the value of my Gobbledygook books. I have a very nice set, which was purchased from a board member, who purchased it directly from Eastman's collection. Everything is documented, so the history of the books is well established. Both books are signed and sketched inside the front cover by Eastman and Laird. Any idea what these things are worth these days? If for no other reason, I would like to know for insurance reasons. Thanks!

  2. BTW if anyone else is interested in TMNT books I am going to be putting a bunch of sweet ones up for sale soon. They are all from the collection of Peter Laird and all slabbed. Mirage let me kind of hand pick through their offerings, so these are some of the best from his collection. They will range from some pretty inexpensive stuff, to some pretty high end stuff.

PM me if you want more details.

  3. Recently (past year or two) I've seen a downward trend in the prices for #1's, and maybe some other turtle books. Anyone else notice this? Any clues on reasons why?

More supply than demand/turtle fans are too rare? Times are tough?

Maybe it's just time to buy?

I think its mostly more supply and less hype right now. People are not talking about the movie at the moment and the mirage sale has gone through.

Also, I don't believe it helps that a lot of "lesser" copies seem to had gone up for sale for awhile. Off-white pages and stuff like that. Turtle collectors generally are picky about the books and superior copies tend to sell for a premium.

If you look at GPA for the HG books they have shown softer sales, but the mid grades and been firm. Those books are less affected by increase in supply and people generally pay smaller premiums for page quality, are less picky about if they are signed, etc.

Long term TMNT I still believe is one of the best comic investments out there. Even with some books coming out of the woodwork, the census is relatively small for books historical significance and popularity.

  4. Nice pickup. I was going to go after those covers but decided not to at the last minute. I say frame it up on the wall and enjoy :)

You bet I am! I had the exact opposite reaction in the final moments. I wasn't going to budge, but, then, I did. Hah! Will definitely be something I cherish for a long time. Ever since '07, when I first learned of the elusive Turtlemania Specials, I have been, for lack of a better term, obsessed with collecting this book, much to the chagrin of my TMNT series collecting side. Even though my wallet doesn't share the same proclivities.

In that case, it sounds like this really went to the right person. :luhv:

  5. Thanks and thanks! I figured that since I probably will never be able to afford a true gold edition of Turtlemania, the proof is the very best I could do.

I wonder what the sketch was on the back??

What an exciting night for all TMNT fans. To see the granddaddy of them all sold for such a high amount...I think, even though we all (except 1) didn't get it, we can be excited that our passion was respected, and represented, very well tonight.

Nice pickup. I was going to go after those covers but decided not to at the last minute. I say frame it up on the wall and enjoy :)

  6. Ok, am I the only one who thinks that $23,000 for the first TMNT #1 9.8 offered for sale was lower than you had envisioned? I might have been off my rocker with $32,000.....but come on, not even $25,000? I think the buyer made a SMART purchase. I am now officially pissed at myself for not bidding more as I stare at the book.

"Spoon" me in the goat butt!!

I think the seller got a total bargain. If I had the money to drop I would have outbid $23k

  7. Been absent for some time now but just saw that 9.8. :o Simply amazing. So, sitting about $4-5k shy of $20,000 with 4 days to go. I'd say cracking $25k is a pretty realistic bet. I would be surprised to see it jump over $30k though. Can't say I'll be upset to see it sell high though.

Adam--are you seriously looking to take a stab at this white whale?-)

If not Adam, one of us should sure get that book for sure. I was bidding on it, but $15,000 is about the top of where I want to go. and Im thinking this bad boy is $25K at least.

  8. Is Telerites selling his copy or did another one get graded that hasn't hit the census yet?

Either way, I'm interested in seeing that and the Gold Turtlemania. Very cool!

Thats what I was thinking as I did not think he had the rest of these books in his collection, but the census was just updated 2 days ago???

According to Schmell, all the books were recently graded - I guess the census will show two copies in 9.8 after the next update.

Wow! Thats one heck of a collection to be recently graded. Would love to knew the story about where the came from. Did you happen to ask Doug?
