  1. Marvel chipping is a printing defect, right? So you either have it you don’t. It is not age caused brittleness (which can make your book deteriorate in a slab).
  2. The real money is in coppers. I'm justifying the entire spending history of my childhood just on some Usagi Yojimbo appearances and an Aliens 1 (who knew?). I didn't even know they had value. Made me dig deeper into copper, and I now realize that the cost of every X-Men comic I bought off the stand can be recovered if I just off sell a first appearance of "Mister Sinister" (who?) in an X-Men I bought to keep my run going (but never read). Crazy.
  3. Wow. Cool surprise. But his signature is really bad - anyone want to diagram the letters in his name? I'm pretty sure there's no j.
  4. Was shopping on eBay and stumbled across a decent looking copy of a 1965 Avengers that caught my eye. Looked at the pictures, and lo and behold I saw the following stamp inside the book: Darrell Grimes was the owner of my local comic store in Eugene when I was growing up. He's about 10 or so years older than me and he must have bought this book off the rack and stamped it. That address is about 1 mile from where I grew up. And this book was being sold by a New York seller! I bought it for the nostalgia and good memories of the old LCS. Darrell's retired now and sold the business. What an unexpected pleasure! Anyone got any SA books with this stamp? Anyone else ever have similar surprises?
  5. How do I grade? Well ... I used to be 8.5/9.0 (white), but now the colors are fading, more creases, and I've got thinning up top. I'd say I'm down to a 6.0.

  7. Isn't that true for every part of any collection?
  8. Yeah, but first I need to confirm which book it was. For a variety of reasons, it is likely Bob would remember what it is he bought and whether he sold it to Geppi. I can then move on to asking Geppi what happened to it. Bob should remember because he wanted the book badly enough that he took a vacation with his family to go meet the OO (who also took his family on vacation to meet Bob) at a memorable location. The family photos should help jar Bob's memory if that's an issue.
  9. And therein lies the rub. We think we know the small pool of books it could be, but aren't sure which it is. We have a very strong guess, but would like to confirm that it is right. Hence, the need to contact Bob directly. Sadly, my experiences with the OPG publishers don't give me a lot of confidence that they'll get me through to Bob very efficiently.
  10. Thanks for the info Adam! Since Bob sold books to Geppi (and I've seen a picture of Geppi in his museum that shows what might be the book) and Geppi has contributed books to the Library of Congress, my friend is pleased his dad's book might have ended up in the LoC. So that was really great info! I really want to help my friend out whose dad sold the book(s) to Bob. He also has a picture of Bob and his family he'd like to send Bob's way. It's quite the story. Once again, if anyone has a direct line to Bob, could you PM me the email or telephone number? I think you would be making two people (Bob and my friend) happy. Or if you know someone who does have the email/telephone number, I'd greatly appreciate if you could put me in touch with that person. Thanks!
  11. I heard he sold his comic book collection some time ago. Anyone know how he did so? Are there any auction or catalog records, or was it just a private sale? The reason I ask is that I was just told a great story by a person whose father sold a key book to Overstreet back in the earlyish 70s (apparently to help fund a house purchase, so it was a good transaction), and the person was curious about what may have become of the book. If you happen to have an email for Bob that he checks, please PM me so I can just ask the source. Thanks all!
  12. Definitely, SF. In the Fillmore district, not far from the Fillmore West. That area was all torn down and rebuilt in the 60s or so. On one side is the rebuilt Japantown. On the other are ugly brick buildings. That store is long gone, but there may be a related store less than a mile away on Geary.
  13. "Overpriced" is an irrelevant concept when it comes to talking about a class of collectibles. A collectible is only "overpriced" if you can get it cheaper elsewhere. "Overpriced" is a concept that only applies to a single example of a class collectibles (e.g. X dealer has overpriced Black Cat 50 because I can buy it down the street for half that price). What I think the OP is really trying to say is that the upside, from a price growth perspective, on PCH is diminishing. He may well be right. That analysis, which is about making money not enjoyment, requires a comparison of the upside on PCH to the upside on other potential purchases (which could be comics or something else depending on whether you are talking about just making money or making money on comics).
  14. The only "limbo" between "delivery" and "receipt" is in data processing. The reasons are obvious: (1) they are short staffed and (2) as soon as they data enter a book as "recieved" the TAT clock begins running. So ... due to short staffing and/or market reasons books stack up at CGC and are not entered into their computers as "received." They have been "received," but not logged as such. Is this a good business practice? No. A smart manager would (1) hire low paid data processors (extra temps even until you are caught up), who don't need any special training, to make sure that books are immediately logged as "received" on the day they are "delivered" and (2) re-set expectations on turn around times to realistic numbers from the date of actual receipt so that customers are not disappointed and frustrated by BOTH books in "limbo" and missed TATs. Transparency and accountability increase customer satisfaction.

Based on the above, it appears that my two Fast Track Economy books are on slightly different tracks. The GA book got done first. The Copper book is a little behind.

  17. At most, five "working days" a week. And I believe they used to define "working days" to exclude days the days the appeared at conventions (including set-up days I think).
  18. I do agree the MH MF 73 cgc 9.4 is a cool book. He paid $57.5K in 2006 for it (I assume). 14 years later he would make a decent return. Highest price paid for a copy was $104K in 2016 for a cgc 8.0 (3rd highest). Is it a $1M book? I don't think so (AS 8 isn't). But, I think he easily could get five to ten multiples for what he paid (and maybe more). Too bad it, like AS 8, does not have the debuting characters on the cover:
  19. It's a super cool item to have along with the Cinderella Love. Great talking piece about swipes and influences. And if you really love Baker, I can see how you'd pay that amount. It's a Greek magazine, you may never see another copy.
  20. Frankly, it is a better piece of art than Baker's. And, no, there is no way this is Baker. Makes me wonder where he got the mag and if there are other swipes out there.
