  1. Are comic values driven by movie speculation? Only a tiny tiny minority, and only because speculators subscribe to the most basic analysis.
  2. First, the only claim I know of is that Batman 1 is a top five comic with Action 1, D27, Superman 1, and MC 1. Second, I have seen no evidence anyone will pay $11M for a comic book. The pool of people willing to pay $1M is very small. So these kind of comments come across to me as merely wishful thinking which is not going to move the needle for buyers in that bracket.
  3. To be clear, I do not “invest” in comics. I generally do make money when I sell, but it is not a financial strategy for me. It is just a fun diversion or icing when I make a nice profit. I think of it as funding acquisitions. The real value for me is the fun of the hunt, telling stories, learning stories and info from others, especially here.
  4. I will not forget the massive bath he took on Flash Comics at a Heritage auction. It was brutal. You could see what he paid in prior auctions and you could see what he was making. Even without factoring in Heritage’s cut it was a horrific abject lesson. And word was he was selling because he needed the money. Real estate is boom and bust and those guys can get hammered. I can’t think of anything recent comparable other than the bath D. Adams took on the WW 1 he bought as a short term flip to dress up the AS 8 and Sensation 1 he brought to market and the poor guys who bought that AS 8. But that story is just a cautionary tale whereas the Flash Comics were a tragic opera.

  6. Why am I the first person ever to like the first post on this thread?
  7. Here's my problem with Instagram: One seller at a time. Why go there when I can get multiple sellers, and multiple choices of books, on eBay and even these boards? Way too much effort. I think that those using IG are a penny wise and a pound foolish.
  8. Good restoration candidate? ow/w and just need one piece:

  11. Nothing worse than looking in a slab and seeing an annoying bit of paper floating around.
  12. I think you could probably get a nice coverless copy for $10K to $20K and a partial cover is for sale right now for $15K. You could marry the two and add the piece and have a really nice presenting copy to show off. That would be a great way to get the family history.
  13. They are readily available. Staples were a fungible product back then, and lots of stapled products and even unused staples are available to conservationists. So its not a hard leap of faith to make.
  14. Not sure why anyone cares about staple replacement (with period appropriate staples). It is a classic form of conservation and ultimately, I think, will not impact book value at all. Tan pages, on the other hand, would be worrying to me as the book might be on the short road to becoming brittle. Pieces added is not conservation, but restoration, and everyone's going to have their own opinions. If, as here, the OP is trying to get a piece of your family history, some level of piece additions shouldn't bother him at all. It's a less expensive way of getting a book he desires because his grandfather created the character. I say go for a nice looking restored copy you can really feel proud to show friends and family over a crappy looking unrestored copy that will appeal only to the geekiest of comic collectors.
  15. If you've read my posts, you know I like nice quality subscription variants. This one's not quite as high a quality as I'd like, but I think it cool because it's a transitional issue from the back cover address box to the front cover box in which they just printed the address on a blue background. I wonder how many ended up in the dead letter office because the address blended into the background? Its also great art. WDCS 143:
  16. There's even a collected edition by Dark Horse.
  17. When I started collecting as a kid in the 70s I was a completest. My main goal was all X-Men and related character appearances. But, by some time in the 80s, Marvel was milking that cow to an extreme which I viewed as a money grab. By the end of the 80s I had given up buying new comics. When I came back into collecting, my focus shifted to more esoteric GA goals which are not focused on completeness at all. In short, comic company greed killed the completest in me.
  18. It was Ian Levine and he drew the line at newsstand US issues for his DC collection. He did not include giveaways or foreign editions.
  19. I think this is a seriously underrated book. Schomburg, first A-Bomb cover, indicia error dates to January 1945 (not 1946) before the first A-Bomb (so its a nifty error), and it is rarely found in high grade (2 highest CGC census are 8.0).

  21. Not a "generic response." Dallas was freezing, without power, and without water for a good part of a week. The entire Mid-West was having postal issues due to the extreme weather.
