Gouge Defect Through Comic (ToD 10)
Cnight replied to Cnight's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
@joeypost @lostboys @Point Five @seanfingh @theCapraAegagrus sorry to be a pain folks, but I just noticed the book seems to have distributor ink running the entire bottom of the book. It doesn’t loop onto the cover, but is just chilling on the edge of the pages. This is distributor ink right? Would you guys consider this amount to be egregious? -

@lostboys did you ever find your books that were similar? -
Gouge Defect Through Comic (ToD 10)

@Point Fiveactually, the pages are just rough as spoon the entire length of the book. The rough cut seems to get MUCH worse above the indent though. -

@Point Fiveyea; the pages are ROUGH above that indent. Took some extra pics. @lostboysthat’s a good point! If it shows up across different grading eras; then at least CGC is a bit consistent on identifying it as a defect they don’t seem to hit hard on. -

Thanks bud! This TOD book I’m sharing is a 9.0; with some stress lines on the spine. However, looking on gocollect: I see another TOD 10 got a 9.8 with this defect, but it was graded in 2018. -

For real??? When did you get them graded? I could see this being twine damage from how the books used to be packed and shipped back in the day like sean said. -

Nope; this problem is only on the edge of the pages. The spine doesn’t have any issues besides spine ticks. This is a weird defect 🤣; literally looks like someone carved out bits from the pages. -
Hey folks Hoping you could help me figure out what kind of defect this is; it looks like something just cut a chunk out of the comic (or “smooshed” the paper) from the side. How would a book even get this damage, and did you think it’s printer related? Grader notes don’t mention it, but do mention the other flaws on the book.

Well heck….this explains alot

Amazing Spider Man 194

@joeypostyup: the paper is just folded over! -
Amazing Spider Man 194

Looks to be that way; looks like a bindery tear where the paper has folded over. I can ask the seller to provide a picture from an angle to verify. -

Here ya go folks! Find the pictures below! As far as the price goes: they are asking too much at listed price but they are really eager to sell it (they bought it from comic link when the price was much higher). Grader notes are below, but it’s weird there is no mention of the scratch/dirt line nor the binding chunk missing. spine stress lines very small crease left top of back cover very small crunch left top of back cover very small, very light bend left center of back cover

Amazing Spider Man 194

Yea; I’m thinking I’m better off letting this one sit. Trying to find one last candidate to put on the list of books before I send them out to Joey. -
Amazing Spider Man 194

Yea; that’s about my feelings too. If enough folks can come to the same idea of “not sure”; then CGC would have a statistically viable shot at letting it slide as a bindery defect. This is a CFP resubmit candidate for me btw. -
Owner says he thinks it’s a scratch, plus: it looks like VERY VERY small bits of paper are missing when zooming in on the pic I took.
-
Top is bindery related; a lot of 9.6’s and 9.4’s have that same defect I found. This one is a 9.4 by CGC; graded in December 2020. I was originally alarmed by it as well, but saw it on quite a few other high grade copies (also: the grader notes make no mention of it, but do call out some other things on the book).

Got a Werewolf by Night 32 that I’m looking to buy, but found this one defect that I can’t figure out. Does anyone have any insight? It looks like some color lift or printer line? Lord, I hope it’s not wear 😭.
-
Hey folks! Back with another one for you; found a 9.6 ASM that I’m looking at buying, but found this one odd defect near the binding. It looks like a legit tear; not a binding or manufacturing defect, but a legit tear from whatever. Anyone think this is an binding or manufacturing defect, or do you think it’s just a tear? Personally: I think it’s a tear, and I’m a bit put off about it now.

Does anyone think that if this was the only flaw on the book, that it could get a 9.8? I personally don’t think it would be permitted on a 9.8, but I just want to ask. Hate to have a possible 9.8 TOB 10 and not pursue it. FYI: it just came back from CGC, and Joey did an AMAZING job. The grade is 9.4, with this color breaking line being the only defect noted.
