  1. Nice book. Not a cover that stands out until you see a large scan of it. Congrats. And, yes, Woozie had his own strip and so did Chop Chop Scrooge, You are right about it probably not standing out until you see it. I pulled it out of the box and it pretty much shouted, "Buy Me!" I assume Chop Chop was a feature in Military comics or Blackhawk?
  2. Bravo 40 !! That looks great Colors look really bright and clean !! Hopefully its Cole stories inside so you can experiance the twisted madness of his genius Guide says it's Cole. I think I will be saving this one for a read over the Thanksgiving holiday. It looks crazy inside, maybe the beginnings of Cole's madness and bitter end??
  3. Just when I thought the Long Beach con was going to be a bust this little beauty popped up from a box at Terry's booth. It being Halloween and having always wanted a Plastic Man I took the plunge. The interior stories look equally funky though I still have to read them. Woozy even has his own feature.
  4. Fun book Steve. Put this cover next to that brooding issue of Detective with the Batman shaped like a Castle to see what can happen to a company or character in twenty short years! Having said that, the Batmite is kind of cool in a very goofy sort of way. And if you want the ultimate, grab those issues of World's Finest where Batmite and Mr. Mxyzptlk (sp) team up to aggravate our favorite heroes. Is it any wonder Stan Lee saw an opportunity!!
  5. Directly to CGC at San Diego. Directly to CGC at San Diego. They weren't very helpful on the phone. I told them I had never done this before and asked if they might e-mail a form and they referred me to a site I was not familiar with at all. Probably will need to call back again, seems like this could be resolved on e-mail simply enough but I guess not.
  6. News to me = never heard of it. Usually they just tell you to send it back in using a reholder invoice and manually write the problem on the form. Are you sure you didn't misunderstand what they told you ? You are probably correct, like I said I am a novice at this. Where would I find a reholder invoice? Presumably on their site. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
  7. I called CGC earlier this week about a newly arrived book that had a defect on the inner plastic case. They said there was a form available to report this but being a CGC novice and time challenged thought I would ask if anyone can point to a site. Thanks in advance.
  8. My first three submissions to CGC seemed to work out pretty well. I bought the All Star off the stands and I bought the two Flash books at a New York Show in the early to mid seventies. Total book investment $2.25, slab investment $106!! The Flash 215 arrived with a scratch on the inner case. Anyone know what I should do about that? Call or e-mail?
  9. I think you are mistaken, it may have been a POP book. Parade of Pleasure for those not in the know. With twins I can sort of relate to that cover sometimes!
  10. It might be a Fine- but I think he graded it properly as there are a few defects not showing up in the scans. I will be going back to this store as there were some later mid 50's WDC&S I might need too. New LCS with friendly service and deals!!
  11. Here is the kind of Duck buy I like, it was all serendipity too. My wife and I dropped the kids off for a birthday party at a laser tag place in Alhambra, CA. We walked down the street to have dinner and then afterwards took a stroll down the main drag. I noticed a new comics store and of course had to go in and take a look. It was a nice clean store with a friendly owner or storekeeper (YAY!) In the back they had the obligatory back issues bin with a big half off sign. I didn't expect much but decided to dig in and was surprised to unearth this guy. I think I have it already but somehow it didn't matter. The price ($15.) was right and I got to wake up this morning and read a classic Barks' tale in its original guise. A 61 year old subscriber copy from Humboldt South Dakota now has a new home. Thanks to Kenneth Hertle for taking such good care of it! The Mickey Mouse serial is the Phantom Blot story too!
  12. Great book, I bought that off the stands. The beauty of the 100 pagers was the huge amount of DC history at your fingertips for a mere 50 cents. Where else could you learn about Air Wave or the original Wildcat? DC probably thought they were getting off cheap with free material but I was in heaven!
  13. By the way compare the detail on these painted Huey Dewey and Louie's to the Barks' version I posted, what an amazing difference.
  14. One of my first Dell Giants! As a kid I used to hunt these down at all the second hand sales, you could usually pick them up for a dime or so. Sure they were all beat to hell but I used to love them and read them all. I still have this one. I only wish I had known the thrill of buying them off the newstand, but I was a little too young for that. The closest I got was the Disney Comics Digests in the early seventies which were packed full of goodies. Also, I used to love the Dennis the Menace Giants and Specials; particularly the travel issues.
  15. How about making an offer at a better price, sounds overpriced to me unless you are talking something incredibly rare or desirable in the contents.
  16. Great book and if you ever come across another one and want to sell it please let me know.
  17. They were mostly earlier works (early 70's) with one exception (late 80's) and I believe they were oils. You could really see a difference between the earlier and later work in the level of detail.
  18. Thanks to a tip over in the comic events section from Steve Borock, my daughter and I headed over to the newly opened Heritage Gallery in Beverly Hills to view a number of Barks' paintings from the Kerby Confer collection on display. It being the Saturday morning of the 3 day weekend, what is normally a one hour drive only took 30 minutes each way from the Pasadena area. My daughter who is eleven and a big fan of Little Lulu took all the photos. She got a big kick out of the paintings and maybe a bigger kick out of some of the other rare collectibles on display including actual dinosaur fossils. I apologize in advance for the quality of the photos as we had to do our best with a flash, the gallery lights and a handheld camera with only about 30 minutes for our visit. Hopefully, you will get a sense of the mastery of the works but there is no alternative to seeing them in person. As you look at them you can tell that Barks really understood and lived these characters. There is a fullness and richness to his paintings that brings the characters into three dimensions on the canvas. It was great to be able to get close and look at the detail of his brushwork as well as his layering work that really achieves this three dimensionality. My personal favorite was "A Christmas Trimming," which positively oozes mood and Scrooge's miserliness. My daughter loved that one too. Some of the duck portraits are rather great too though. Enjoy.
  19. Cool to see this collection of Gold Keys. I am still sitting on all of mine bought from '72 to '80 mainly off the newstand. They are under appreciated books, good to know someone else likes them.
  20. Great book, be sure to read it. My copy bought many years ago has a cardboard square pasted in the upper side binding colored red. Funny thing is I saw a copy at San Diego restored in exactly the same way in the same place!! Must be a weakness in the printing or binding. Also, saw a great collection of Animal Comics in San Diego and picked up one of them. Will post somewhere later.
  21. Then as timing would have the framing shop called and I picked up the following piece. I bought this back in 1976 or 1977 for the princely sum of $13, and paid over ten times that for the framing! Anyway proudly hanging on my wall today.
  22. OK, I didn't plan it that way but it turned into a Cap themed weekend. First up my pickup from San Diego with a couple of interior shots included from reading the book this morning. I have to say that this book was much more readable than my only other GA CAP - issue 11 which left much to be desired in the story deparment.
