Son of My 50 Year Junk Obsession
50YrsCollctngCmcs replied to Robot Man's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Bob @Robot Man I was in Robot Man heaven yesterday when I stopped by Nakano Broadway a bit outside Shinjuku. I had taken my son to a Manga museum that is basically a small Apartment building which housed about six to eight manga artists in the 1950’s in small (5 tatami mat) rooms on the second floor. Shared kitchen and bathroom and no bathtub or shower! My son mentioned Akihabara but that’s way too touristy and overrun by maid cafes. Nakano Broadway on the other hand is a four story Warren of small junk shops! Robot Man Heaven! If you’ve ever heard of Mandarake this is where they got their start and they alone must have ten to twelve stores specializing in all facets of geekdom! I took some shots for you in a shop specializing in tintoys and such things. The entry had a very rare unopened Ultra Man model. Pricey! -
Did he make the diorama? That's a beautiful piece of work.

I regret not buying more of these over the years. They used to be priced very reasonably. But I always opted for traditional comics instead; I still would prefer a nice WDCS over these but that's because I read the stories and these books are a collection of strip reprints, puzzles and text features. Still the covers are in a league of their own! And the promotions for the studio on the back cover are great too!! Here's one of the few issues I managed to pick up.

Wow, you should post some of your nicer issues!

Bob diid you say Skyline? Took this shot a few weeks ago at the Nissan showroom in Ginza Tokyo. They rotate vintage cars from their collection. I always stop by to see what's on display. I also have picked up some Godzilla goodies with the new movie out over here. Lots of fun stuff. -
Bugs Bunny / Looney Tunes first appearances help

I'm imagining an alternate universe where everyone of the stories inside was an equal to a Carl Barks' duck four color tale! -
Most unpopular Golden Age superhero
50YrsCollctngCmcs replied to ChillMan's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
The Barker; though he wasn't really a super hero unless filling a circus tent is a super power. On the other hand his comic ran longer than one would think. Fifteen issues many of which featured the Fat Lady on the cover. -
Not very surprising; if there isn't Barks work inside not too many would collect it despite the fun cover. Those Donald Duck issues from the post four color run weren't that popular.

If there are flea markets in your area you may still be able to find deals on cartoon character books; they are usually left behind after the superhero books are picked over. There is a wealth of fun books out there; including old now mostly unknown characters like Little Audrey. There are also some really fun books that can be bargains like Dennis the Menace and some of the Sheldon Meyer DC funny animal work like the Three Mouseketeers. Honestly this is a really interesting area to collect and explore without breaking the bank. Here's a copy of Funny Stuff which has the Golden Age version of the Three Mouseketeers but they morphed into more of a humor strip in the fifites. Turtle McSnurtle was a takeoff on the Flash and is also very funny.

Somewhere I have an irradiated dime they were giving out at the NY World's Fair in '64 or '65!! It was in a nice little plastic holder emblazoned with the nuclear symbol. Imagine trying to hand those out today!! -

With that period penny it's probably been sitting in that holder since it was issued! -
Agreed if you are going to list somewhere please let this group know.

Pretty nice covers on these early copies; many I don't think I've ever seen. Thanks for posting. -

Yeah crazy huh? You would never know from the outside. I might even have bought my copy and not realized I was getting a bunch of Tomahawk reprints until I got home. -
Or Loony Tunes #1 for that matter.

quadrinhos star spangled #75 what the value

Those Tomahawk stories are great! Back in 1976 DC put out a Treasury called, Superman salutes the Bi-Centennial. It featured the great cover from Superman #14 and was filled with Tomahawk reprints. A bit of false advertising but it was a great introduction to that characters stories. -
Now that's an estate sale! Please don't tell me they only cost like $200 or something!

I’ve picked up Red Ryders for the same reason! -
OK Ducks are insane again. Luckily for those of us who prefer to collect in the less stratospheric realms deals on decent books still abound. WDCS 64 on Heritage; a beautiful book but my God the price!! WDCS 64 from these boards; very minor color touch less than $150. Hats off to those who have that kind of cash to pursue the very best! I'll stick with my more humble books that I get to read!!

Those two ladies look exactly like the librarians in my local public library as a kid. I used to be freaked out when they would take out the card from the books I wanted to check out to write in the return date with crooked gnarled fingers that looked like witches!! The only books on comics in that library (an Andrew Carnegie library) was the 1948 edition of "The Comics." I was angry to only find one chapter, and a dismissive one at that on comic books! A few years later I discovered that the County library in our town had a much wider selection of books on comics including Dr. Wertham's classic tome. I devoured them all.
