  1. A few questions from someone who bombed this round but is trying to learn (memo to self - bump your grades by .5 regardless of what you think you see)… House of secrets - is that not a stain on the back cover by the ‘salve’? Strange Tales - is that spot above the torch’s head considered distributor’s ink? Also did they count the CB crease in the torch’s leg a printers crease? I was 5.5 way low -minor spine split, small tears, cover creasing 3.5 close enough 4.5 small pieces out FC, stain on rear, small spine split 4.0 spine stress, foreign substance on FC, colour breaking crease FC, readers crease 8.0 close enough ugh 13. After a 5 last round… thanks in advance for comments and opinions!
  2. @scburdet love the notes!! Thank you. I wish more was made of these contests as a learning - ie here’s what I saw etc
  3. Can someone explain the front cover of Popular for me? I had it at 3.5 and still don’t know what that defect is? Also all that colour transfer”!!? Also curious about the Thing. Thought the missing piece would have more of an impact. trying to learn….
  4. I think it is because of what I will now be calling “snot ridges” on the front cover that it left me speechless. What IS that defect?!?
  5. I got to the first book and literally thought “good lord what fresh hell is this?!?!” And then I think I gave up
  6. I’m a glutton for punishment and need more cryptic emojis in my life - sign me up good sir!
  7. Can I do a small dance for being in third without turning everyone else off? Living the dream!!
  8. Curious - How would they determine the purchase price for purposes of capital gains?
  9. I was more interested in knowing which GA/SA titles have very few floating around in the census - there was a thread a while back about books with fewer than 50 in the census - and I seem to enjoy oddball books, so was just wondering if you could look at the other end of the spectrum. Cheers
  10. Cool site- didn't know it was out there. I didn't see a way to sort by the fewest number in the census - does anyone know how to do that? Cheers
  11. Ditto this. I find that if you go with “this feels/looks like” it goes far better than trying to count the defects and score them individually. The more I scrutinize, the wronger am…l
  12. I feel like lucie just pulled the football away again…. the bottom spine corner on the x-men got me - looked like something going on there. Otherwise I was ~close enough~ to feel ok about my awesome 8 points this round
  13. I think these contests are great - and fun - and a reminder not to overthink things! But as someone who has only recently returned to comics, and was never a good grader to begin with, they are a great learning tool. Thanks Mike!!
  14. The bottom right corner made the difference to me on this one. The Asm at 9.2 was high for me with those spine ticks.
  15. Wow. Another fugly round for me. I truly didn’t know what to do with the scuffs on the Super Comics and was waaaaay hard on it. Thank god I don’t do this for a living…!
  16. I have posted this elsewhere somewhere, but I have a 7.5 universal with a detached cover at the top staple. It is a silver age key, which may have biased their grading? Otherwise, it would likely be around a 9.0. Per the CGC Guide to grading comics "A cover fully detached from one staple will usually not grade higher than 7.0 or 7.5"
  17. I have a Daredevil 1 with a detached top staple that is CGC graded at a 7.5. It would otherwise grade around 9.0
