  1. While I think that IH181 is overpriced/valued, the character's importance (likely #2 behind Spider-Man in the MU) merits much of its hype. There are other Bronze books that I think are much more overvalued. WBN32 is the best example -- the first appearance of a third-tier Marvel character that has a minuscule following -- but there are others (MP15, HFH1, etc).
  2. I don't have any evidence, but I think that -- unless you're talking 9.4s and higher -- the price of an IH181 isn't so out of line for people not to buy it at cons/have money on hand. I mean, I would love to know how many copies Gator sells at NYCC or other large shows; I'm sure it's not an insignificant amount.
  3. I would say that books like IH 181 and ASM 129 have a huge number of in-person sales that aren't tracked by GPA. I mean, I bet at C2E2 coming up, 10 or more copies of each will be sold.
  4. I'm not sure if these each deserve their own threads, so I'm putting them in one. New Jersey has probably the most active comic book convention scene I've seen anywhere. You can find a show literally every weekend, and this one is no different. Unlike most of the others that cluster around the suburbs of New York City or Philadelphia, you have two near the ocean coming up. On Saturday we have the Middletown Comic Book Show in Middletown, New Jersey. I've never done this one before so I can't tell you what to expect, but what I've heard is it's a nice family con -- lots of toys, newer books, artists, etc. And it's on a Saturday, which is not so common. Middletown Comic Book Show Saturday 3/16 -- 10 to 4 Middletown Arts Center 36 Church St Middletown, NJ www.middletowncomicshow.com On Sunday, about an hour south down the shore is the Manahawkin Comic Book Show. This is a true shore town -- but it's one where people live year-round (and not just in the summer) -- and it really could use a regular show. This is the third one -- I did the last one -- and just like the one above, you're not going to find an Action #1 there, you will find a decent range of Silver to newer, Pops, toys, and the like. 5. I just went and checked their site, and they show an update for the Seattle show. (There was nothing there when I posted this -- honest.) 3 months out for a big show like this is not that much time, however. (And it's nuts that Seattle doesn't have a smaller show that runs every few months. This is a big city that can handle that.)
  6. I just checked the Ace Comic Con site, and they have no upcoming shows listed. So was this a failed experiment? Does anyone have news?
  7. Manhattan really needs a monthly show. It would lessen the mob that is the Big Apple Con for the attendees who just want to go and buy comics and not worry about the movie stars.
  8. Did anyone go? Was this the first Comic Con Revolution event?
  9. He started in the 60s. There wasn't that much happening before that.
  10. This is the first time I've ever missed humor/sarcasm on the internet. (Note: that was sarcastic.)
  11. Chuck was born in '55, though. There are plenty of others that were around earlier. And he was never much of a historian.
  12. Jerry Bails and Hames Ware are two that come to mind right off the top of my head.
  13. When selling/buying comics -- but especially graded ones -- and using GPA as a barometer of pricing and trends, do you take shipping into consideration? As the vast majority of books that GPA tracks are from online sales and a majority of those sales also need to add shipping, there is sometimes a pretty significant cost bump involved. For example, a 9.8 copy of Spider-Fellas #3 (tushy variant) has had sales of $35, $32, and $36 on GPA. When you go to your local one-day show and see it for sale at $45 -- 30% over GPA -- do you think that it's actually a wash because that $10 would likely be eaten up by S&H? Obviously, as books get higher priced (in the 4 digits) that shipping becomes a much smaller percentage of the overall price and you might not think about it, but what about for books say... $150 and less?
  14. Everything sells. Everything. In my 50-cent and $1 boxes, I have a lot of books that I never thought would go even at those low prices, and yet, there they are, in somebody's pile. Some things sell faster than others, and some things you really have to practically give it away, but there are buyers. Last weekend I sold both a Jimmy Olsen #134 and a Bobby Sherman #3. Who'd'a thunk?
