    :gossip: only graded copy

William Van Horn --> Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge artist/writer for Disney comics. His Nervous Rex work pre-dates his Disney work by a few years!

Used to love this series. I had completely forgotten about it. Nice book.

  3. It was The Big Loo and then it changed to something else.

I believe it was changed to "Red Melvin" or something like that.

    Yes, that's it!

TheBigLoo has been selling a ton of nice Big Little Books on ebay.. anyone seen the BLB shelves at Geppi's lately? I fear they may be bare.

  4. Ok, first time in a while that I've had to post here. Bought a book from Bellrules1 on 5/12 - a new guy on the boards who has done nothing here but post a couple of sales threads . . . perhaps my first cue that something was wrong. Takes him 9 days to contact me, and another three days to even shoot me his PayPal addy. So far he's guilty of only incredible nonchalance. I pay him on the 5/24 as soon as I have the details. It's now 6/12 and there's no sign of the book. It's been 31 days, but only 20 days since I paid - either way . . . Houston, I think we may have a problem (shrug)

Divad.. I have nothing but good things to say about bellrules1. I've had a couple purchases from him go through without a hitch. He's been a great board buddy and I've found him to be a standup guy. Might just be a case of "real life" taking precedence over "comic life".. but I think that he will make good. Hope this gets cleared up amicably. :wishluck:

  5. I once bought a $180 Fawcett from him. I wasn't happy with the book, and asked him if I could exchange it for a $180 DC he had for sale.

He replied that a $180 Fawcett isn't worth as much as a $180 DC. hm

You should have asked him to pencil a nice Church code on the Fawcett to make you feel better.

Why not? He's done it to other books.

Roy, bringing the cheese, I also heard he and some Geppi guy marked up bunch a books to look like and sell off as Church copies,

Looking for me? Where are we going, Roy? :insane:

  6. Re-watched the Crumb documentary again today.. was really surprised to hear Crumb's nasty remarks about Larry Welz towards the end. He was on the phone and someone was apparently trying to persuade him to participate in an animated feature project.. he said:

I got no patience for Hollywood bulls***...

I can't think in those terms..

I've already got SO much of my life wasted with those people down there. Animation? Forget it. No. Not interested at all.

Hasn't been a decent animated film made in this country since about 1940.

Cherry Poptart is an abomination. Larry Welz is an idi*t. It's gonna be a piece of garbage. I'm not interested.

I didn't even know who Larry Welz was the first time I watched this film, so those remarks didn't mean anything to me. Now that I do, I was all like :o

  7. I went to an outdoor market near my place yesterday that happens only twice a year - easily over a thousand vendors selling everything including the kitchen sink (ok maybe not a sink, but I did see a one of those old school drinking fountains). It takes an entire day to cover the entire grounds.

Picked up only three comics - one of them was one of the tougher Whitman's - Popeye 158 (this isn't the actual copy, but here's the issue I'm referring to) in VF shape.

I even made a strong offer to buy a 60's era comic stand (not a spinner) but they wouldn't sell.

    Real nice find! Congrats.

  8. The Popeye strip was a hoot. lol

The humor, even after all these years, still stands up. :cloud9:

I was visiting a circus friend this past weekend and he showed me a copy of the 1936 Ringling program, in which I discovered...Popeye. There's no escaping him. :)

Love that advert. Geppi's Museum has a bunch of those biscuit boxes.. and some of the cookies encased in plexiglass. Still edible?

  9. The other day I was looking at some 1930's sideshow photos online and I took special note of this shot.

I wonder if Olive Oyl ever found out about Popeye and the Four-Legged Girl?

Hah. Awesome photo! Olive would definitely not be happy to see that. She had quite an anger management problem.. :)

If you need a Single Series #20...contact Comics-n-ERB I think he has one for sale....

    +1

I really like that Alice in Wonderland.

  11. Picked up a copy of this Popeye story book from the late 30s.. for $6.99.

Congrats on getting such a good buy. :applause:

It looks like a great book and it's one that I don't have.

Is the format the same as Popeye and his Jungle Pet?

Thanks BZ. No, the format is different. It's a very thick cardboard stock cover that wraps around and is saddle stitched like a Feature Book.

Added another storybook to my collection. What a beauty!
