  1. I submitted some of my nicer raw Kings recently. I'm very happy with the outcome.

The #1 was previously a PLOD -- had the resto removed and it still maintained it's grade. The #17 is a stunning copy and it made me all warm and fuzzy to see the CGC 9.2 grade. I purchased the #12 as a Lost Valley copy with the COA, but I had no clue that the #14 belonged to the same pedigree. Sweet!

Excuse the wonky photos.. I don't have a slab scanner yet.

  2. And finally, I think a version of this was posted previous in a different thread, but this is certainly a neat photo, and I also have posted the reverse of the photo with the wire service notes. Not a newsstand photo, but it does show a lot of great GA books. This is of the Bill Placzek collection, circa 1965...

:o No mylars or shiny CGC cases?! With all those books lying around someone might actually *ack* read them.

  3. There were five printings of the San Francisco Comic #2, but since they are all exactly the same, they are all considered first prints in the underground comix collecting community. I assume you probably bought these from Don Donahue (apexnovelties) as these are books he regularly lists on eBay.

Is that the right user id?

  4. Ya know.. I've pressed a book or two in my day ( :preach: ) but I've never seen results like the ones you've posted -- even after humidifying the book first. I find it very hard to believe that you only used one quick pass of steam on the front and back of the book. In my experience, the book would have to be quite damp to squeeze out those wrinkles. Are you giving us the whole story?

  5. Haven't really done any topical threads besides selling books, so thought I would start this one and see where it goes. One thing I noticed besides the great covers of the golden age era are some really spectacular splash pages and here are some of mine that I like quite a bit. All of these are from Captain America, please share some of yours.

    Those reds really pop! :applause:

  6. .. still reading. Up to the 7th volume. Although I've loved the story thus far, I have to say the 'ghost circles' kinda felt contrived and just not appropriate for the comic book medium.. a bunch of issues are devoted to them trying to out maneuver something that isn't even visible. Everything else is

  7. Just to clarify, the issues printed after 4/80 were only available as Whitman copies in bagged sets. All issues printed before then, could have Gold Key/Whitman variants. Nice Popeye copies BTW. As for the Price variants, they only exist for issues printed in 1/81. Those issues would be Bugs 223, Donald Duck 225, Huey 67, Lulu 262, Scrooge 182, Super Goof 63, Walt Disney Comics and Stories 484 and Pink Panther 78.

Great info.. very helpful. Saves me the trouble of hunting for books that don't exist. lol

  8. Very cool and informative thread! I didn't realize there were so many Whitman variants.

So let me get this straight.. For each issue I have to find the Gold Key copy, the Whitman yellow logo copy, the Whitman white logo copy, and the possible Whitman price variant copy. I thought I was closing in on completing the end of my Popeye run, but thanks to this thread I realize that even if I have a copy of every issue, I'm still only about 1/3 to being complete.

:frustrated: Trying to find all the variants actually adds to the fun, though. :)

I just picked up some Whitman Popeye file copies from Metropolis this weekend. The inside splash page has some handy information about where the content of the book came from and when it was published. "22 pages + cover new .. rest from v1. no 18".. meaning that there is a GA Popeye Sagendorf story reprinted in the back. File copies.. <3 :luhv:

I also picked up this high-grade white logo Popeye earlier in the year. Only white logo I have so far.
