  1. Keep 'em coming everyone, I am still learning too!

Well, here's the thing guys. When I started looking at pulps, I too made the mistake ( :baiting: ) to look at covers as the main attraction of the hobby ... then I met real pulpsters and got the "Oh, so you're a cover collector" snub. Having been on the PulpMags group for several years now, I've learned that pulp collecting is all about the stories inside. All this to say that there isn't a "list" of classic covers as we have in comics. Plus there are too many cool pulp covers out there :o

Yep, I collect Edgar Rice Burroughs stories mainly in Pulps. Just in case you don't know in cases like ERB or Robert Howard their stories were published in Pulps first, then collected later in Hardcover books so the pulps are in fact the "first" printing of their stories.

Most stories of ERB in pulps don't even have his story as the cover art. :( In fact most are pretty boring covers compared to Weird Tales and others.

  2. lol well, I'm more worried about the fact that they are inclined to get some badass spine issues with time, but heck... who knows! I might have myselfe a random 3.0 toilet paper quality Norwegian edition of a modern marvel transformed into a neatly pressed 9.8 if I leave it like that for 20 years. Or not hm

Thanks for the nice comments on the setup btw. I'm often looking at some of the rooms in this thread whenever I wanna find inspiration to build more on my own. Some great ideas to be found. Right now I'm looking to get a proper CGC holding unit, and I think I decided on some handy display stuff they use at public liberaries. Now its just to track a supplier of nonstandard furniture like this :wishluck:

Try Brodart, they make library furniture plus sell a few library supplies.

  3. I would love to make it to one of the pulp cons some day. I've done very well on ebay, but as always it's a crapshoot. I much prefer to buy from other collectors and I've gotten some great books from fellow boardies.

Heritage sometimes has good pulps in their signature auctions, but buying raw (as all pulps are) from them has become as hit-or-miss as ebay. Check out http://thepulp.net/ for loads of info including lists of dealers.

Mike, what are you thinking about collecting? just curious.

Last year I bought and read the three volumes of recent Conan reprints in softcover. I then bought the Kull and Bran reprints which I also liked. This got me thinking about buying some of the originals and I started looking into Weird Tales of which I have now purchased 5 issues. I also noticed that Lovecraft, another author I enjoy, wrote for Weird Tales. At the same time I have become aware that ERB wrote for the pulps, but I haven't looked into any of his material.

I've also noticed a lot of really great covers in this thread which might be of interest. I have purchased a number of Fiction House 40s comics over the years based on the covers.

As you can see, I am pretty new at this, but for the moment will probably focus on Weird Tales, some other adventure stuff like ERB and now and then a cover I really like. Who knows where it will all lead, but as many people in this thread have mentioned, comics are starting to become really expensive for GA and anything newer isn't really a challenge to find.

    Mike

Sounds you're looking to collect exaclty the same stuff I'm interested in. Wait until I'm done! :slapfight:lol

lol! I have to say the same thing, hold off!

I haven't added anything lately (need to change that) to my thread, but check it out for some ERB pulps and related items! :headbang:
