I will bring...the whole edifice down....on their unworthy heads!
AJD replied to Get Marwood & I's topic in Comics General
Another corker of a thread that seems largely unappreciated. Two and a bit years late, well done Steve - loved the movie star pics. (And great Patrick Troughton photo. It made me want to go play the recorder... badly.) -
Love these threads. They bespeak a love of comics far beyond the 'what will this sell for?' mentality.

Well it appears that I can't buy a comic of any description at the moment. I put in what I thought was a pretty solid snipe on this one and ended up the underbidder. But I thought I'd include it here anyway. After the first few issues the Supercomic series was a vehicle for American reprints - most of the high number issues are funny animals like Woody Woodpecker. This one is a reprint of a Flash Gordon story. So... why 'Speed Gordon'? It turns out that back in the day the word 'flash' in Australian slang was a derogatory term for someone who thought they were a cut above everyone else. So the Australian editor's changed the name, and went through the issues changing it in every voice balloon or caption that needed it: You can read more about it in a cool comics blog here: https://ohdannyboy.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-adventures-of-speed-gordonor-how.html BTW, these days the word 'flash' is still in common use here, but it now means 'pretty good' ("wow, that's pretty flash") or 'a little bit fancy' ("oh, that's flash"), but not in a derisive way.

Well it's only partly a FH cover. Yes it's a Fight Comics issue, but by that stage of the Oz run they were mixing up the content between FH and ACG material. That cover has elements from FH books (the aircraft are from Wings covers) but the central figure isn't. I suspect it's an Oz-only cover.

Now you mention it, Don Rosa does have an uncanny resemblance. No wonder he has such a knack for capturing 1955 in his duck stories...
-
Love it @OtherEric! I have always liked Don Rosa's work, and that's a charming sketch. If you ever want to sell it, I would seriously consider changing my name to Eric.

Very kind of you Brandon. For @1950's war comics here's the 'Marianas turkey shoot' story in full (well, all 4 pages). The historical accuracy here is pretty sketchy - if you really want to read about you could start with Tom Cleaver's Pacific Thunder book, which I read recently, or I'm sure there are whole books dedicated to the Battle of the Philippine Sea).

"Hoist with his own petard" - also from Hamlet.

Oops - my bad. I misread a credit. Image removed. Nice thread everyone. -

The price makes me wary of bidding on it! If I was planning to I'd really want to see the staples clearly. Where there's water there's likely rust.

New to a short box near me, thanks to @Black_Adam As usual with this title it's a really mixed bag, with crime, sci-fi and 'social justice' stories. While it's completely derivative of Edgar Alan Poe's 'The telltale heart', I quite liked the final story:

I can scan the rest of the story if you'd like?
