  1. Here's a new addition to the war bonds cover theme. (Note the billboard!) Here's the splash for one of the stories - with a war bonds exhortation in the bottom margin. The good folks at Nedor really wanted to make sure readers of this story got the message - here's the corresponding margin on the other five pages:

    Exciting Comics 38

From the album: War bonds and stamps

    Note the billboard...
  3. I could get behind Raymond as the cover artist, but the interior doesn't look like his FG to me, though the artwork looks quite good. (And the GCD agrees with me.)
  4. I noticed a post from @Point Five in the gold forum about Spirit sections. That reminded me that I have a few of those, so I thought I'd dig them out and share them. The Miss Rhinemaiden 1950 contest winner is about to kidnapped, though the Spirit has other ideas. As it happens, the winner does not need the Spirit's help...
  5. Halo - just say 'no' kids. Seriously, 'no'.
  6. Please tell me the character isn't really called "Lord Plunderer". Oh, dear God, it seems to be true.
  7. Given that the exact same item sold for $3,226 in a Heritage auction a few days ago... I'm guessing your "$2,700" buy was before the buyer's premium is included? In any case, it seems a reasonable enough price for a book that presents pretty well. I wouldn't worry too much about "slightly brittle" - it might mean just one spot on the comic, not the whole pages (which would be "brittle pages"). Did you buy the grader's notes to see what they say before buying this book for $3,226?
  8. An even better read is his "feedback left for others"... yep, one to avoid.
  9. Great outcome! Coongrats - it's obviously something you really wanted, and it's good to see it at the top end of our estimates.
  10. Sorry - I misinterpreted "picked up". Man - that's some ironic foreshadowing on the Gwen cover!
  11. Here's another Australian FH reprint from the "Low" pedigree. (Named after someone's favourite David Bowie album, I expect.) With a slightly surreal space story for our UTC shot.
  12. I don't think the slabs are heat sealed - I think they are ultrasound welded. The corner posts are push fits, but in such a way that you can't pull them out again without breaking them. The fact that yours looks intact makes me think you have nothing to worry about. I pulled a few of my slabs out to look, but I don't seem to have any of the 'glue' effects. (BTW, it doesn't look like glue to me, it looks like melted plastic, so probably just part of the sealing process.)
  13. It won't cost you much: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Forbidden-Worlds-85-Silver-Age-Comic/273188147887 I'm not the seller BTW, but I'd happily buy it for you and post it if you really want it.
  14. I think this is one of the great covers of the GA - and the first version of it on Jumbo Comics #20, May 1942, beat Wonder Woman onto a cover by two full years. No surprise that they revisited it when Sheena got her own series in 1948. My book is on the left, beside a scan from the internet of the Jumbo. I prefer the redrawn version, even if the earlier one gets the history merit badge. Inside you can find girl-on-girl thrills, as well as the obligatory girl-on-lion: And I owe the Australian comic industry of the late 1940s an apology! The cover of the Oz version of Sheena #4 (see above in this thread) wasn't a local add-on after all. Here it is, dodgy lion and all, in Sheena #4:
  15. Well, there are some collectable issues there, and there are people around who collect foreign editions, so selling them wouldn't be too hard. Try posting in the thread below and see what happens... the Marvels will certainly find a new home. As for older books, like the Captain Midnight, board member @Komic Kazi has an amazing collection, and might be interested. Oh, and if you have any UK Planet Comics issues, remember I saw them first!
  16. I just realised that the article doesn't mention Maus. Seriously? I know it's not in the book, but it's probably the best - and best known - example of the genre.
  17. Here's my nomination for the worst Thorpe and Porter stamp placement of all time...
  18. Thank you. It is an attractive book, and it looks nice among the generally darker covers in the run.
  19. Yes! And no. There is a book length and quite substantial bend, but it doesn't break colour. (It's substantial enough that you can see a bit of a shadow in the B in Jumbo.) Doug graded it as 4.0 (which is too low IMHO, even with the bend) and I think a press would put this book at 8.0 or so. No idea. It isn't a Jumbo or Sheena cover from the Fiction House runs, and it looks to me like it might be a local effort. I have some Australian Sheenas with obviously 'done on the fly' covers. Here's one - note the expertly rendered lion...
  20. Placing a WTB ad for Australian pence comics has turned out great. Nobody had one to sell me, but I got pointed towards a couple of sellers who did. This just in from Doug Sulipa. Here's an UTC of a pretty gritty 'The Hawk' story. Also some nice GGA and creative use of the panel border here. Before I got this I thought I was chasing 38 Australian issues of Jumbo Comics. With this one, and Komic Kazi's postings, I now know there are 48, and two specials. I've revised my estimated completion date to 2053 now.
