  1. Thank you folks for the kind words. :hi:

Beautiful Jon - I was tracking that one and am really pleased to see that you got it. Now I'm after one...

Andrew, I thought about PMing you to make sure we weren't bidding against each other, but to be quite honest I figured it wouldn't matter b/c I didn't expect to win! My top bid was around $200 and I figured it would be clobbered several times over...I was really surprised that the book finished well under that. Anyway, it's a good sign...I'm sure there's a #20 out there with your name on it. (thumbs u

Jon, I thought about bidding and was going to PM you for the same reason. lol

But I got my nice #22 a couple of weeks ago and decided to let this one go. There's no doubt that there are some good duck books to be bought at remarkably agreeable prices right now. There's one in this week's Heritage that I want too... hm

And at a great price!

  3. I don't collect mint condition stuff. And I'm not sure if there's any real rules for this. But I thought I'd show off some of mine. Even though they're not the best copies. I actually have no desire to get perfect copies of any of them, except perhaps a few that are my favorites. Other then that, as long as it's readable, I'm cool with it. I'll just post a few for now.

    (thumbs u Thanks for posting!

This thread and its inhabitants do NOT discriminate on the basis of grade. Only on the basis of being non-Duck-related, and even then we've allowed some posts of that Mouse fellow.

Yes, welcome aboard. And if you go back to the very start of this thread, you'll see that it's been downhill since day one in any case...

  4. Just to keep the charts coming, I looked at how many people have been on the probation list since 10/07. Looks to be growing steadily. We started off 2 years ago with 10 on probation and now we have 33.

    ProbList.jpg

It's the analyst in me speaking, but what would be interesting is the per capita number of probationers. I suspect the overall number of board members has grown at a similar rate and there is about the same proportion of problem children.

  5. Can anybody give me any info on this item? I have a set of 8 or so different that are in a run... that I purchased several years ago.

    Welcome aboard! :hi:

Duff Man has answered your question, but if you stick around here you will learn a lot from some great people.

  6. Just bought this on Heritage. Woohoo - my first ever buy on there.

I feel almost grown up. Now I just have to work out how to get it shipped here... ???

:applause: I was watching that one. Very glad you snagged it, Andrew! What a beauty!

Thanks Jon - I'm very pleased. It's my earliest WDC&S (by 36 issues) and a pre-Barks one to boot with a patriotic cover. Very cool.

  7. Congratulations!! :applause:

Great looking book, and I know it will cost an arm and a leg to get it here. Gotta ask you though AJD - are you going to crack and read it? :o

Gotta tell you DMC, I haven't decided yet. I've cracked every other slab I've ever bought, but this one might take some extra will power...

  8. Great stuff Scrooge - what a wonderfully varied run this is.

Here's one that I got today (not new to the thread but I haven't seen it in the 16 months I've been around here).

This was the first Pogo and Albert outside of Animal Comics.

BTW, dunno if anyone else is surprised, but I did a real double take when I saw the very first drawings of Pogo (Animal Comics #1):

    Has any character changed more??

  9. I was tracking the 9.6 WDCS 132 auction that just ended on Heritage's weekly auction, and was startled by the price history on this issue, demonstrating how big an impact even a little supply of HG copies can have on prices:

Aug 8 2008: CGC 9.4 copy sold for $2151 (granted, this was a crazy price)

Feb 27 2009: CGC 9.8 copy sold for $1075.50 (half of the previous 9.4 sale price!)

    Aug 2 2009: CGC 9.6 copy sold for $418.25

As far as I could tell, none of these were pressed or resubbed copies of the same book, although it would've been pretty hilarious if the buyer of the 9.4 copy had way overpaid in anticipation of maximing the potential of the book, achieved his wildest dreams by pressing it into a 9.8 and then proceeded to realize 50% less. lol

I am SO glad I ma happy with readers of these, that high end game is too dicey for me.

Agreed - just call me Mr fine to very fine.

  10. Got another 1945 WDC&S. I bought this on ebay and it turned up exactly as graded. Of course, it turned out that the seller was a fellow boardie. Thanks Mark!

Colours are better in hand than I could get with the scanner - the shading from medium to light blue is especially nice.

  11.

"Son of the Sun" is One of my favorites too. Rosa and Byrne kept me laughing and google eyed when I couldn't afford to buy golden age.

This is the book that got me back into collecting comics. I'd given up for well over a decade until I saw it in the local newsagent. I am very grateful to Don Rosa for picking up Barks' baton.

  12. This was posted in the WC. Forgive me if you've already seen it.

    That really is strange ???

I think it's a German-made film intended for the population of France. The point is that the Allies are talking of liberating France while bombing it. It was probably intended to undermine goodwill towards Britain and possibly to undermine support for the resistance.

  13. The #88 is an all time fave of mine! Great story, 1st app. and the cover is one of Kelly's best. Just look at all the detail & color in the confetti!

Yes, I'll bet the colorist hated Kelly for that one, but did a great job on it anyway.

  14. A good day at the letter box today. Not being able to afford the big ticket items or really high grades, I'm plugging away at WDC&S 50-111 (the 1940s issues I can reasonably aspire to on my budget) in 6.0-8.0 I've gotta say that this is working for me. I'm loving these books.

You have to love those Walt Kelly covers - this is one of the best and has the first appearance of Gladstone Gander as well.

This one has just turned 60 - I can only hope that I'll be as well preserved when I get there.

  15. I know you are all following my Mobil giveaway collection with bated breath. ;)

Here's the latest, a nice #3. Looking for 9,10,15,16 now.

(I have a few of these for sale now. PM me if you are interested in buying one of these cute little comics before I list them on ebay.)
