Just got another War Bonds issue. (Thanks Gary)
I'm looking for nice copies of Wow 27 (if you ever tire of yours Sharon, you'll know where to turn...) and Master 56 to round out the Marvel Family War Bonds issues.

Got busy looking for Oz stuff yesterday and forgot to post my New Year scan.
Great cover, I'd forgotten all about it being a New Year image.
There's a few WDC&S New Year covers - here's my belated offering:

Just arrived from a boardie - thanks Matt.
I hope to get somewhere between 10 and 20 of the 1-100 run this year. But the tortoise was chosen on the ticker for a reason...

Just got this one in the mail today. No competition for it on ebay, which was nice. It was graded 4.5, which is about right, but this book is really solid and it's really nice to handle (and read).
I love this Carl Buettner cover and, like others here, I think there's more than a little Walt Kelly in those bugs.
That is my favorite WDCS cover. Just classic!! How are the stories inside?
All of the stories in this book are reprints of newspaper strips. (The first new story in WDC&S was in #24 but I think everything in this one is a reprint.) Having said that, I love the Taliaferro DD strips, and the Mickey Mouse is The Bar None Ranch by Gottfredson, which is great. (This is the original art. This story was redrawn for a much later WDC&S.)

Not as pretty as Plastic Man, WDCS and the Bats, but this has been a fun run for me to collect. I am only missing a couple from the part of the run I am chasing down -
Those Raggedy-Anne books are great. I've narrowly resisted going after them myself.
-
Golden Age Disney goodness.

And a thing of beauty it is too. (thumbs u
Love those walt Kelly covers.

This is a really heavy piece. My sister had to help me put it up!:
Looks wonderful - is it a metal plaque?

And, just to be overall clear:
Most recognizable comic characters to muggles:
1) Superman
2) Batman
3) Spider-Man
4) Wolverine
5) Hulk
6) Captain America
7) Wonder Woman
....
10000000000) everybody else.
Ummm... Mickey Mouse, anyone?
I would wager that the vast majority of muggles don't know Mickey Mouse (or Donald Duck) is still in a comic book.
Fair enough - but that's not what you said.
BTW - where did that panel in your sig come from?

let's look back at a 1953 christmas where kids are reading comics instead of watching the television to the left. visible comics are caspar, archie 66, krazy cat and a walt disney comics & stories.
i wish everyone a happy holiday with comics!
The Archie is this one:
The WDC&S was a bit harder. White 'Walt' with a yellow (probably) 'Disney' and something that comes to a point under the 'W'. The Dell logo is in a coloured box with saturation similar to the main cover colour - probably red and blue. There aren't actually too many of those combos to choose from, and the only one around the right time is this one:
I think there is something else sitting on top of the WDC&S to produce that pointy bit. Note that the film stock has reversed the relative darkness of red and blue on both books. Of course, it's just possible that I'm over-analysing this.

Bought this as a 9.4 raw from Peter Palmer
He kindly got it signed by Barbara Eden, Bill Daily and Larry Hagman for me
And here it is
Barbara Eden was HOT when she played Jeannie in that show.
Indeed she was. My dog is a tall leggy blonde, named... Jeannie, of course.

I have midgrade copies of two of those and wish I had more. Yours are stunning!

Since I live about an hour from Cookeville, I love the Cookeville books. Here's another comic that I got back from CGC.
Great book. Only guy missing is Stalin
He was on our side.
BTW - that's a very pretty 5.0 !

Heritage has been lightening scans for years. I'm not surprised at the difference between "ad" and "reality."
Yes, I've got a couple of Heritage books that are much less bright in hand.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. Sounds consistent with the kinds of circulation numbers for Disney books during this era that have been previously stated.
I've read that WDC&S peaked at around 3,000,000 in the first half of the 1950s. The USA population at the time was 150,000,000 - which means that 2% of the population bought a copy (and probably two or three times that number read it).

GCD is your friend.
Seems "Master of the Universe" was somewhat of a whore - bit like Tarzan as a licensed character. Many publishers, no "home".
Marvel had the property (via Star) in 5/86 - 5/88 at least.
DC had it 82/3 - in a period that covers the DC Comics Presents.
Image had a crack 2002/2003
Mattel self published a buttload.
Would be an interesting exercise to collect them all . . .
We look forward to the group shot Peter.

Yeah, coming from adamstrange I was expecting something low grade \
It could happen.
Here are the others.
Ouch!
Some great recent posts guys - this is such a great thread.
I'm still trying to work out how to catch Doohickmabob's OCD.

I think it would be cool to own WDC&S 1-100. This will be a long-term project with a few diversions along the way, but here's where it stands today. Those of you who know the run will spot that I own precisely none of the hard or expensive books. Oh well...

After a few excursions from my usual focus this year, I think 2011 is going to be a duck year. (That's the plan - it will not survive contact with the sales forum...)
Here's a couple of warm-up books to round off 2010's acquisitions:

That is a wonderfully helpful post. Thanks so much for taking the effort.

Just arrived from Heritage.
Bondage cover.

Wow - that has to be the ultimate group shot! What great lot of comics - those pictures made me wish I could sit down and start reading them. Some iconic covers, some instantly recognisable characters, classic movies (Rod Taylor in the Time Machine anyone?) and some very obscure titles.
Just great, great stuff.
