+1. I see in the notes that there's fading in the TLFC corner, and soiling on cover. Not sure I see the fade in the photos. Not sure about the soiling either. Maybe it means the edges on the back? IDK.

I don't see much soiling if any, that would be worth mentioning.  There is some tanning or foxing on the rear cover, but it doesn't look bad in my opinion.

You can see some fading in the green area TLFC on the spine-side of the surfer.  The green goes to a more blue-green near the spine.  I think that is what was flagged in the grader notes.  But the black areas below near the spine don't show any fade or color change.

The other outcome of this post was I bought a copy of this book b/c I liked it too much

I think this is a great cover.  Classic good versus evil.  Plus you have two of Marvel's most powerful characters foregoing their other powers and resorting to MMA-style combat in the middle of NYC.  No cosmic blasts to be seen.

  2. Thanks in advance for your grading and comments.

Some issues I see with this book are the front right corner wear and creases, and some front cover wear at the staples, mainly the lower one.  My main question is the flattened spine, and how much would it affect a grade?  Can a pressing improve the spine?  And how much would a pressing improve the back cover unevenness?

Is that a manufacturers crease running across the circle? I'd like to see the soiling along the spine of the back cover cleaned off. There's no visible tanning to the cover, so I think 8.5-9.2 is possible depending on the amount of nearly invisible creases CGC seems to find that aren't easy to see in photos. Nice book.

I think it may be a manufacturers crease, but not sure how to tell.  It does not look like a crease that would be due to someone folding the cover while reading, etc.  It is more visible in the photo than to the eye.

Thanks for your feedback.  I will have it cleaned then CGC graded.  Will update here once the grade is in.

Might be best not to use CCS for a C&P. I posted a copy of SS #15 on here a little while back. I only sent it in as it’s a cool cover was a high grade copy (the rest of my SS vol 1 are all raw except #1).

Used CCS and it got damaged during pressing! They estimated the damage had dropped it from a 9.0 to 7.0!

To be fair they did compensate me and I’ll update the thread when it’s finally back in my possession.

Look forward to hearing how you get on with this one (thumbsu

Thanks for the info.  I will use someone local for the C&P, as they came highly recommended.  This will be a first for me. I would be really disappointed if there was damage during the process.

  5. Thank you all for your input and expertise.  I plan on getting this one CGC graded, as well as a few others.  I will let you know what they come back with once completed.

On this book, the back cover looks much cleaner in person than in the iPhone photo above, which seems to sharpen the contrast between the white paper and the soiling..  I understand that a cleaning may help.

FoggyNelson: I agree.  This is one of my favorite covers.

  6. Thank you, scburdet and Foggy Nelson.

scburdet: I've been away from the hobby for a long time.  I did not know about the GoCollect site.  It looks like a good resource.  Thanks for pointing me there.

I am going to post some of my better books to PGM for feedback.

  7. Hi All,

I am new to this site.  I was looking through my collection, and am thinking of submitting some issues for grading.  The Hulk #116 is typical of the condition of many of my books from back when I was a kid.

Thanks in advance for letting me know your thoughts.  Regarding the warping on the back cover, would that benefit significantly from pressing?  I've never had a book pressed, and jut learned about the process by reading here over the last few days.  This issue was stored, properly I thought, in a comic bag with backing board for the last ~45 years, standing vertically.  I'm a bit surprised at the warping.

    Best Regards,
