Nice result. I literally have too many copies of this comic including 2 that were graded shortly after CGC got started. This almost has me thinking they should be resubmitted b/c the standards have evolved.

Thanks! Yeah, this was certainly the one I was most surprised about. I was expecting anywhere from 9.0 to mayyybe 9.4. Haven't looked at older slabbed copies of this, but I did a lot of digging into Batman: TDKR #1 and realized a lot of the newer slabbed 9.6/9.8's seemed more generous in regard to certain defects (such as the back cover corner wear that is common on that book).

  2. Extremely happy about this one. Of the books in my first ever CGC submission, this is probably my favorite. After looking at a bunch of 9.6/9.8's online, I realized this was a possibility, but I didn't want to get my hopes up. Very psyched to have this one slabbed! Thanks all for the input on all my subs this round. Came out better than I could have thought--know that won't happen every time, but grateful the first dip in the waters of pro grading went well.

so much white. Really shows the smudges on my laptop screen well. I think there might be a small smudge or something on the back cover >9.2

Yeah, I noticed that and wasn't sure. It's much less glaring in person. Hoping a good dry clean can help--one good thing about white covers is that cleaning goes much farther with them, at least from what I've seen (though they also show smudges much more easily soo...give and take I guess lol).

  4. Debated posting this here, but figured it never hurts to have a range of eras/grades here for anyone who wants to test themselves (also, this is probably my favorite book/series that I own). Maybe my first book to submit that I think has a real shot at 9.6/9.8 after a C&P, but I'd love other's input. And sorry for the white on white--I didn't realize how annoying this might be until after I'd taken the photos...whoops. Only thing that jumps out to my inexperienced eye is the bottom corner of the spine, but I think this may be an allowable manufacturing defect since it appears in nearly every other copy of this issue I've seen. Anyway, have at it!

I used to think ticks would be graded harshly, but as long as there isn't alot and nothing too bad, it can still get 9+. I'm guessing after a press ill get a 9.2. Then again, I sent in a Nova 1 that looked worse than this a month ago and got a 9.4. There's a bit of a theory that when you send raws in for a ss, graders might give you a little bump too. Not sure how true it is but we'll see.

Ah k yeah I wasn’t sure. I was initially leaning 9.0/9.2 but I’d rather err on the conservative side as a practice (for my own sake with sending in raws more than anything else lol). CB ticks definitely baffle me—I’ve spent a lot of time scanning similarly CGC graded copies on eBay and whatnot and I’ve found the 9.2 and up range really difficult to get on a bead on for ticks. Grade killer for newer comics but seems to be more acceptable on older (pre-90’s) books. Also, FC seems to be way more important in that regard (and this one’s a beaut). Still learning though!

  6. Some noticeable wear along the spine on the front, small chip missing upper right front cover, left top of back cover a bit chewed up looking (not sure what kind of defect that’d be noted as), and possibly some kind of very small stain on lower right FC (but very hard to tell)? I’d say 8.0 with press. (Again, see comments from other post and take with a big grain of salt).

  7. Hi! Hope you don’t mind me chiming in—I’m still pretty new to grading but really want to test myself on the forums so figured this was a good way to have a written record in case you repost the actual grade later on. Anyone feel free to correct me if this is frowned upon on the forum! Figured I’d start with higher grade bronze/copper/modern since that’s what I’m most familiar with.

Many color breaking ticks on the back as well as a small color breaking crease to top left corner of the back cover, but the front cover looks gorgeous to me aside from a tick near the very bottom of the spine. I’d go 8.5/9.0 with a press, since most the blemishes are BC. (Again, let me know if I’m overstepping here—I just find grading a really fun exercise)

It's only because we prefer Hostess Twinkie ads to lame 2000 Pop Tarts prize propaganda.  :baiting:

    :roflmao:

You'll probably want to press it but it's a 9.4.

    Thanks for sharing.

I’d love to see those ads on modern books. If it’s gonna be a product ad at least make it interesting y’ know? I bet 9 times out of 10 a person reading any given book couldn’t remember a single ad. Subliminal i guess 🤷🏻‍♂️

tear of that type/length caps the grade around 9.2. Maybe 9.4 for an otherwise perfect book since it's on the back. I'd guess this grades out at 9.0/9.2 with a standard press to take care of any minor handling issues

Thanks for the feedback! As a rule, is it a good idea to C&P any book of a certain value (say, $200 and up), even if it's hard to discern if it needs one or not? I have a few books that to my layman's eye look pretty good, but I also know it's easy to miss indents/creases/rolls/etc. I figure $12 and the presser's CGC discount probably worth it even for newer books, but I'd love your input!

  10. Hey everyone! I know moderns are probably a little boring for all of you, but I greatly appreciate any input you can give. This particular issue is close to my heart because I grew up watching the show (along with the original animated series). I'm pretty damn excited to now have the first run of the comics.

Notable defects that I see are some color-breaking spine ticks on the front and back covers, spine wear, a bit of wear on the bottom back cover near the spine, and a very small tear (somewhere between 1/16 and 1/32 of an inch) on the top right back cover a couple inches left of the spine. Mainly posting here because I'm really not sure how much such a tear will affect the grade (and I'm curious to learn!). Let me know what y'all think!

  11. I'm curious about whether or not a new, full-foil cover and be safely pressed (independent presser, not CCS). The book I'm specifically interested in is brand new and has two very small non-color-breaking ticks on the front spine, but is otherwise very clean. Would it be worth it to press this, if it can be done? Is CGC more lenient with these types of ticks on foil covers? Thanks ahead of time for any input (and sorry if this has been covered before!).

A slice is the same as a tear & I'm having trouble making out the dimensions of the stain, but this will be a significant demerit. Can you see the stain on the inside of the cover? Looks like some color rub/lift near SNOW WHITE. It's definitely that CGC hates stains & foxing. 5.0±0.5

The stain doesn't appear on the inside of the cover. Dimensions look to be maybe 3/16 of an inch high and maybe twice that wide? Though yeah it's hard to tell. Thanks for the feedback! Mostly just hoping for a 5.0 so that's a positive assessment in my mind haha.

And if no soft brush is available, use nothing harsher than a microfiber cloth designed for cleaning perhaps? What sayest thou joeypost? I wouldn't want to wipe any of my books with any old rag.

To the original poster, how exactly are you storing books that they've been accumulating dust?

Sorry, I totally missed this! The comics in question are bagged and boarded, but the bags are a stiff plastic with a weird raised opening at the top (no flap). I stupidly never taped the top opening closed, and the books have tagged along with me through several moves over the years. I imagine any dust just fell through the open top of the bags. Nothing crazy, but the books were definitely a bit dusty. A microfiber cloth seemed to work quite well. Thanks for the feedback!

  14. Not the prettiest copy, but this is a key I've always wanted to own. Defects (that I see) include ink overspray on top middle of front and back covers (not sure how much that deducts), some foxing on back cover, some chipping on back cover (including tiny bit of upper left corner), spine ticks, and a weird discoloration on FC lower right (water damage?). The big one though (might be hard to see in scans) is maybe an 1/8 cut on the bottom right of the FC (about an inch over) and appears to go through the whole book. Maybe a razor cut? I don't really know, but I imagine it'll hurt the grade pretty bad. Will probably get a C&P at least to try and clean up the whites a bit and flatten the book out. Curious as to your thoughts!

  15. Big question here I guess is how much the 1/8 color breaking corner crease on bottom right FC will hurt. Other noticeable issues are multiple spine ticks on front and back and some weird color rub thing on FC about mid-way down on left side of Batman's cape. Staples are offset a bit, but I didn't notice a roll so maybe a manufacturing thing? Anyway, I'll leave ya'll to it!
