Here's what I got right out of the box with the HP ScanJet 8300. There's certainly a little reflection in the label and at the bottom a bit, but I think it takes an overall great scan. I haven't played with any settings at all, and the DPI is only 200. I'll be playing with the settings next.

I guess I'm surprised that there are so many key WW books for sale in one place. I realize that there's a decent number on the CGC Census, but this still seems like a lot to hit the market (even with some fairly steep pricing on some). Since I own a Sensation #1, I guess I'm a little disheartened with the supply, but maybe I'll get a good chance to swipe up one of the other two key books I need!

I'm normally parked in the SA threads, But I purchased a GA book that I am so proud of...probably my fave grail of all...

 

 

Wow! Beautiful book. Congratulations! WW #1 is near the top of my want list, and it looks like you found a great copy. The colors are rich and it displays really well. Awesome.

The specs on the HP site list it at 8.5 x 14 in maximum scan size (216 x 356 mm)

Good to hear that you like yours. That's reassuring. I've been taking camera photos of my slabs to date (talk about glare problems!), so I know this will be a much improved upgrade for me.

Hi all, I have read this topic several times, looked up availablity of all the scanners mentioned and also looking for the most affordable scanner that seemed to get some of the best results. I ended up buying a Scanjet proffesional 8300 for $92 including shipping off of eBay. Here is a test scan using stock setting at 300 DPI, no enhancements. I am using it on Windows 7 but is also suppose to be compatible with Vista and XP.

 

After reading this thread multiple times (and really considering the Microtek i800), I realized that I'm extremely cheap and ultimately just want something to give me better than average scans of my slabs. This Scanjet 8300 image looks incredibly nice with little glare, so I'm going for it. I also found it online for $92 shipped, so I'll hopefully (finally) have the ability to scan my slabs within a week! I'll plan to share a couple of scans once I get it.

Nice pick up! I think these oversized early Master Comics are really cool. I've toyed with the idea of trying to pick up all the Master Comics pre Marvel Jr, but don't have the patience. Congrats on picking up two great books! I had every intention to bid on all of these, but I ended up breaking my bank and purchasing this instead

OAAW#83 cgc 8.0 for $17K ?!?! at Heritage

 

I know the DC war is kind of a niche market, but this was a hefty price.

This is the second best one out there, but for the long-term is this really blue chip and reasonable ?!

 

Understandably, a first Rock doesn't come up for auction every week (less than 50 cgc'd)... but to think X-Men#1 at 8.0 can be grabbed up for "only" $12K these days and may be more of a staple in the long-term collectors market (?)

I'm stunned too. That's my old copy picked up a long time ago when a collector liquidated his DC war collection. I traded it a couple years after I got it or I would still have it. It's a very sharp looking 8.0 -- great colors and eye appeal.

I think the pent up demand bubbled up with the last CLink auction where a 7.5 went for $9k. There were obviously some large bidders locked out of that book. So, when the 8.0 showed up this month, I'm assuming some folks decided that this one was a "must have". Price may be a little steep, but I think the market is saying that OAAW #83 is the first true appearance of Sgt Rock, on of DC's most popular characters of all-time (somewhere on the list anyway )

I agree with AS 8 > Sensation 1 > WW1 in that order, though I still think the Sensation #1 has the best cover of the three.

Just got this in from CGC.. Highest graded copy I just gotta figure out how much it's worth as I do not know much about WW comics Bought from an OO.

 

So...who won the ebay auction tonight? The WW #52 9.4 went for $1,924. I threw a low-ball bid in at $1,500 but was handily trounced . I hope this fills a hole for someone's WW run...

There are 3 copies of Sensation Comics #1 on eBay, 1 on CC, 1 on clink, 1 on Heritage offered for sale at the moment and there's going to be another 1 in the upcoming CC auction and 2 more in an upcoming HA auction.

 

These are all public sales and I know of at least 2 more private collectors who wouldn't mind selling their copies for the right price.

Don't get me wrong, I like the book but there is not really a lot going on for it. If I remember correctly, Rick posted earlier in this thread that none of these books are really rare or unavailable.

I think "rare" is subjective, but I'd say 38 graded books in existence would qualify to me (I've been more of a SA collector, and an X-Men #1 can be a dime a dozen compared to this). Heck, Action #1 has 28 universal graded books, so isn't far off the pace. WW certainly doesn't have the following that Supes or Batman have, but it's an important book to true WW fans. Certainly more WW books come up for sale due to the fewer hardcore collectors, but it's still a rare key in my opinion.

Most of the ones you listed as for sale have huge warts, so I've been discounting those in my mind:

• 3 eBay comics: 2 are restored plod, one of which is PGX graded, and the 3rd is also the same one listed on ComicLink (CGC 8.5)
   
  
• ComicConnect: Good 5.5 book, but it was once listed as a 5.0 with a different Serial. It's been pressed and does look like it deserves the grade bump. But I wonder if the CGC census is over-stated since there have been two Serial #'s assigned to it (Serial #0148471001 and Serial #1053713001)?
  The 4.0 is also nice and a very attractive historical book as the Metropolitan Museum Copy
  
• ComicLink: The same 8.5 book listed on eBay and way out of my price range
  
• Heritage: 2 of the 3 listed are restored plod; the third is a CGC 3.0 which looks good but certainly well below "mid grade"

I guess my perspective is a little different, but I do agree that folks aren't knocking each other over to buy a Wonder Woman key like they may a good Superman/Batman key. I still contend that it's fairly difficult (and costly) to find a good quality Sensation #1 today without really opening up the wallet and spending a lot of time searching and researching.

Not to dig up an old thread, but I also think the Sensation Comics #1 wins hands down when looking at the cover/slab. It's also much harder to find in high grades.

 

Sensation #1: 9 copies CGC graded 8.0 or better, including two copies in 9.4

 

All Star #8: 4 copies CGC graded 8.0 or better, highest grade 9.0

 

Ahh, you got me. Census does show more mid/high-grade Sensations, but it does seem like there are fewer available for sale (maybe more in private hands?). Or it could be I'm only searching for a Sensation at this point, so I don't have a grasp for how hard it is to find the All-Star

Overall census shows 38 Universal graded Sensation 1 and 55 Universal All-Star 8, so it's pretty close. I think it's just a matter of preference, and I prefer to have them both (wishful thinking, of course).

That said, All-Star #8 does have a 9 page story on Wonder Woman, so it does easily qualify as WW's first appearance. I'd prefer both, but either one will find a soft spot for some collectors depending on their views. WW #1 would be a distant 3rd to me, though there's something to be said about a characters 1st sole book/title, plus it's the long-lived series that's still going today.

Unfortunately, i don't own any of the big three (yet...but maybe soon...), but I imagine I'll focus on the Sensation Comics #1 first since I think it's the hardest to get in a mid/upper grade, then work on the others as time/price/money permits.

For a guy that posts less in 8 years than I do in a day, you damn sure made that post count! Congrats dude! The upper left corner is pretty worn but I have to agree with you that that is a wicked looking 6.5! That looks nicer than the few 7.0 slabs I have.

Thanks. The X-Men #1 has been near the top of my want list for a long, long time, so it's nice to finally own a copy. I actually purchased it via the Comiclink auction last week. I ended up paying $4,167 for it which is certainly more than I expected to pay for a 6.5 copy. But now that I have it, I think it displays well for a 6.5 and it is certainly worth it to me.

Now I have to start plotting my next "must have" title/issue. I could get used to this

Well...today I've officially joined the club. I probably paid a little much for it, but I think it looks pretty darn good for a 6.5 (photo glare not withstanding)...

I'm sure it's posted somewhere, but how the heck do you guys get good photos of your CGC encapsulated comics? I can't seem to get the knack of it.

Well, you can price it at what you want to, actually. And if there's a buyer willing to pay that much, then it's worth that much to that guy. You've got a great book there, no doubt, and if you don't want a lot of money for it, I'm your man.

If you have a 7.5 Our Army at War #83, do yourself a favor and hang onto it. If you are looking to flip it, I would wait until the Sgt. Rock movie heats up next year. Word is that it is in pre-production. I would say it could easily go upwards of $3k right now. Is it the highest on the census? That's a killer book either way. Let's see it!

 

By the way, who else on the boards has one? It seems much tougher than #81.

I'd be glad to share a photo of the comic. I am really proud that I own this one, primarily because it was one of my Dad's favorites when he was growing up. I certainly don't want to sell it, but had no idea that it was considered one of the more significant war comics until I revisited my collection about a year ago.

The comic is a 7.5, although I'm afraid that the pages are fairly cream in color. I guess that's what happens when it is stored in an attic for 20 years (in NJ). Still, it is a fun one to own. I didn't realize that a Sgt Rock movie was in the works?! Now that sounds like fun!

It is brutal. I simply cannot compete and do not think a lot of the books are worth the money and would be hard to turn around if needed for a profit. How much do you think the 83 will fetch? $1700ish methinks. The #45 is hard to say because I never see it around at all. Man I love war books.

 

Mmmm.. Me too. The last big sale on an OAAW #83 that I am aware was a VF+ that Superworld sold for $1600, about a year ago (I never saw the book, so I'm not sure if it was that cherry.)

 

What's interesting, is that I was reading an old Overstreet update (remember those?) from 1991, ans Showcase New England said in their market report that Our Army at War was red hot and they sold a VF/NM #81 for $1400, which struck me as a LOT for back then. Considering that OAAW #83 is easily twice as hard to find as #81, I think it could get easily into the $1500+ range.

 

My VG #83 cost me $440 nearly four years ago, unslabbed. Tough, expensive book.

What did the OAAW #83 end up selling for? Years ago my Dad passed down to me a small collection of silver age comics. Most had been put through the ringer, but the one book in the best condition was an OAAW #83. Those silver age comics are really what got me into collecting so many years ago. I actually tried CGC for the first time about a year ago, and the OAAW #83 came back a 7.5! I don't want to sell it, but it's hard to get pricing data on an issue like this because I never seem to see any on ebay in decent grades.
