  1. Rest in Peace, Jack Davis

From the Mad page on Facebook:

    "MAD Remembers Jack Davis, Artist

It is with great sadness that we note the passing this morning of long-time legendary MAD artist Jack Davis.

Jack was one of the founding members of MAD Magazine’s “Usual Gang of insufficiently_thoughtful_persons.” An enormously gifted and versatile artist, Davis’ work appeared in the very first issue of MAD and virtually every issue over the next four decades.

“There wasn’t anything Jack couldn’t do,” said MAD editor John Ficarra. “Front covers, caricatures, sports scenes, monsters — his comedic range was just incredible. His ability to put energy and motion into his drawings, his use of cross-hatching and brush work, and his bold use of color made him truly one of the greats.”

“More than any one piece, it was Jack’s immediately recognizable style that revolutionized comic illustration,” said MAD art director, Sam Viviano. “There is not a humorous illustrator in the past 50 years who hasn’t been influenced by him.”

A list of Jack’s most legendary pieces would run several pages in length. Among his most iconic parodies from MAD’s comic book days are of The Lone Ranger and High Noon. From the magazine, his notable parodies include spoofs of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Gone with the Wind, and M*A*S*H.

Jack’s final cover for MAD, depicting Howard Stern being plunged into a toilet bowl by Alfred E. Neuman, is beloved by Stern and remains a MAD classic.

“Jack will always be remembered for his charming modesty and southern gentleman manner — which completely belied his rascally sense of humor and wry wit,” said Ficarra.

Everyone at MAD and DC Entertainment send their heartfelt condolences to Jack’s wife, Dena, and the entire Davis family."

  2. Would this one qualify?

I've always thought that's a bit of an artist's error. He just seems to have neglected to draw the her bra straps on her back. hm

I suspect it wasn't an error. It was done for Fox who was pushing the limits and it was done for a cover where both the artist and editor/publisher were going to be more careful that it met their intentions. If it was just an interior panel, then I would think it likely it was an error.

I think it's more that the woman has already removed her bra and the reflection in the mirror simply hasn't caught up to her actions yet.

She's fully topless, but has a bra-shaped tattoo on her front torso. When she saves enough money she'll finish it on her back.

  3. I came across this photo the other day on the interwebs and it really grabbed me. Imagine being able to have actually been at these newstands during that time period and seeing this. I found myself yelling at the gent in the picture, "you're looking the wrong way!"

The Ballyhoo magazine in the upper right area is from December 1935. Unless they were selling back issues, it's hard to imagine they'd have a 1935 magazine on the same stand that had a 1938/39 Action Comics #1.

  4. He messaged me once asking me sell a NM copy of NM 89 at a discount for his sick son who has dreamed about owning this book his whole life.

    That is disgusting.

"My son has a rare illness and is on life support, and he is barely conscious, but every so often he whispers and asks me to lean in so he can tell me that his biggest dream during what little life he has left is to own a nicely presenting copy of New Mutants #89. I tell him 'Son, we just can't afford it, even though it's your greatest dream,' and a single tear runs down his pallid cheek just before he leans back and drifts to a fitful, despairing sleep. But now I see that you have a copy of New Mutants #98 that looks like it might be the bright light that puts a little joy into my son's heart during these dark days, and if only you'd drop the price a little, say 30 or 45 percent, I could afford to make my son's remaining moments of his spirit-crushing existence a tiny bit less tragic. What say you?"

  5. Coasttocoastcomics is a fraud and has no honor on his word or transactions ...he sold me two books and tried convincing me to pay him out of ebay just to avoid ebay fees glad i didnt when it came down to ship me my books he send one book and wrong one to top it off and received emails from him being racist against me and saying profanity and vulgar things towards me he is not a man of word and who knows how long hes been doing this and claims he knows employees of ebay that help him remove any negative feedback no wonder hes been able to maintain 100 %

Can you provide a full account of the dialogue exchanged between you and Coasttocoastcomics so that others can see exactly what was said?

  6. Yes that has happened once before. This was a few years ago, I was confronted in Chicago and someone asked me why I block him . So I asked him what is your handle on ebay? Long story short, he didn't want to reveal what his handle was. This was going on for about five minutes.

Did the conversation go something like this:

"How can I tell you why I blocked you if you won't tell me who you are?"

    "Well, ah, um, er...."

  7. I prefer 18 over both as well. In fact I prefer #13 over the other 2 as well. While not as, "sexy" As the others I still find it more intriguing (thumbs u

I love this cover and think it's great stuff, etc., but I have to say that the "sex appeal" factor is diminished significantly by that yellow hand!

  8. Btw there was some very convincing discussion earlier that PL 17 is not Baker and is in fact Feldstein or mostly Feldstein. If you compare the line work to the Sunny covers and similar Feldstein GGA works I think it's extremely compelling . Bakers stuff has a softer feel

I could believe it is not Baker. Even just the hand is way off of Baker's style and abilities.

  9. VintageComics's multi-bump use of the thread is maybe a little close to the edge, rules-wise, but it was a very interesting set of auctions and the GA marketplace thread doesn't get much action lately anyway.

I appreciate your input. I actually only bumped it once although there were some questions asked (and some discussion) here so I felt obligated to answer them. :)

You're right, and sorry about the inaccuracy. My mind-dump had lumped the Q&A in with the bump.

  10. I am having a hard time uploading the picture here. It seems to be the old fashioned way where you need a web url.

The image size needs to be under 200 kb if you're going to upload it onto the CGC message board server. The default image viewer of your operating system might offer a method to do that, or you could use any other image management software.

Failing that, you can host your images for free on numerous sites (I'm not up on what the best current ones are) and then link them in your message.

  11. This thread is for LINKS to marketplace posts related to the sale of Golden Age books.
The rules ... were designed to make this thread extremely unobtrusive to an otherwise capitalism-free forum.
Reading this initial post from 2006 sure makes me long for the good old days. The "marketplace" being referred to here is the Forum Only Selling Area -- not ebay, ComicConnect, ComicLink, Heritage, or any other non-Board commercial venue. (tsk)

If you're protesting to me, I always thought the purpose of this thread was to notify people of sales going on outside the GA forum, mainly because many GA collector's don't venture outside the GA forum.

While yes, it was originally meant for the Forum Only selling area, I see no reason why someone can't notify people about other venues. (shrug)

My two cents: I vote to allow this one thread to cover both forum-only and outside-venue sales and auctions. As long as people don't spam this thread with every sale, but rather use it occasionally to link to more detailed posts in the other areas, then I don't see a problem.

VintageComics's multi-bump use of the thread is maybe a little close to the edge, rules-wise, but it was a very interesting set of auctions and the GA marketplace thread doesn't get much action lately anyway.

  12. This image has 4 Atomic Defense Trucks. The first 3 trucks from left to right have all 3 attachments that came with the War Of The Worlds playset. The 4th on the right, has the sound beam attachment which did not come with the set and is the rarest of the 4 attachments. In this photo are a few additional figures and a Martian War Machine made by Pegasus a few years.

    So cool. :applause:

  13. Gang, I thought I had this post completed but it I can't find it. I'm posting here because a lot of GA collectors don't venture outside of this GA forum. Chips-Comics on eBay is running 90 no reserve auctions on eBay for me. about half of the books are GA books.

I saw these earlier; thought they might be consignments. Placed many bids. Got outbid many times.
