I feel sorry for the seller of the Hulks.

The 8.5 only went for $38,000 or $29,000 less than the last 8.5 (which was pressed) sold for.

The 8.0 closed at $28,250 which did not meet the reserve but certainly is within the ball park of what 8.0's go for. I am surprised ComicLink let it have such a high reserve.

As an aside the 2 and 3 in 9.0 went cheap too, for about $3,700 each, with the 3 selling for a hair more than the 2. The 4, 5 and 6 in 9.2 all went really cheap too.

Since this thread hasn't been updated yet, the stained 8.0/9.0 sold for $15.8K, a far cry from the 9.0 that sold for $30K+ with the chip out of it on Heritage and the $20K just paid for the 8.5 with the big stamp on it. For a couple seconds there I thought it was going to sell in the mid $12K range, until it got bumped up a bit in the last 5 seconds.

Still crazy at $15.8K given that it sat and sat and sat and sat and sat and sat and sat and sat at $5K when it was in a 8.0 holder.

Ya never know what books you're going to be up against in the CLINK auctions...wonder if having three HG books competing with each other will hurt the final hammer prices? Thoughts?

 

Tom I think Hulk #1 is a rare enough book in high grade that it will not affect hammer prices at all.thoughts on the 8.5s final hammer price? I think 35K

Ahhhh... but will the 8.0 suffer enough .....

I too think that the price on the 8.0 will suffer. Given how rare Hulk 1's are it is really not that intelligent to have three so closely graded together in the same auction, especially the 8.0 and 8.5. I think as such the prices will suffer on both of them somewhat as a result.

As I was in the market and recently purchased a Hulk 8.0 over the past 24 months (since Oct 31, 2008) I have been tracking their sales as GPA is not much help as the last 8.0 they have recorded was in 2007. Over the last 24 months I am aware of 8 completed sales, including my own, and they have sold for between $25,250 and $39,500. (25,250, 28,750, 31,000, 31,000, 33,000, 39,500. The two other sales that I know of that were completed I was not privy to the selling price but I believe they were around mid 30's.)

Not many people seem to be holding on to this book as there are only 7 8.0's listed in the census but 8 sales of 8.0 books in the last two years. (Although it is really just a few copies that have been flipped multiple times). The fact that Hulk 1 in 8.0 has been on the market so frequently recently may also hurt its price.

Not sure what a 8.5 has been going for as only 5 are listed in the census and I can not recall seeing a recent sale. I was not tracking 8.5's as they are higher grade than I wanted. I think I recall a ComicLink sale from maybe two years ago where a Hulk 1 went for around $67,500 and I am thinking it was a 8.5.

That looks like a stellar copy. It would not surprise me if you had it regraded that it would come back with a higher grade now as I think they were pretty tough of Stan Lee signature series books when they were still using the old labels.

I think it is fair to say that some of the early Marvel keys are rare, at least in high grade.

Just using the census, with its faults of listing some resubbed books two or three times you can see there are only 15 copies of TTA 35, 25 copies of Hulk 1 and 26 copies of FF1 at VF or above. Sure there are a number of unslabbed high grade copies as well but to me, given the demand for these early books, that indicates that they are relatively rare, at least in high grade.

With some of these books it is not simply that they are available immediately, even if you have money to spend. You might have the cash but that doe not mean you can find a high grade copy of TTA 35 available to buy.

Early JIM, ST and SGT Fury are not overly easy to find in high grade. They may be more plentiful that Golden Age books that got recycled in paper drives or burnt in the 50's but they are still not that common.

Any Marvel 1964 and beyond is fairly easy to acquire unless it is something oddball like Groovy.

As I think many know I have been working on collecting all the 1961-1965 Marvel Super Hero Comics in CGC 8.0 or better with offwhite or better pages. I have rounded each title to a full number so a few titles run into 1966 (i.e. Tales of Suspense 74 and 75). I am 86 comics away from having all 366 and today I completed my first title - X-men with the purchase of issue 4.

Talk about jumping in with both feet. I mean, I am still trying to sneak up on a decent FC 386

Sometimes you just need to jump in. I've actually been quietly bidding on nice copies of FC 386 for maybe a year and a half. It had always been one of my favorite covers. ComicLink has had a number of them come through and I've noticed Ducks do far worse there than Heritage.

Now I need to find a nice 3 and 4 and then I am likely done with Scrooge as I do not really like the solid background covers although #7 looks great. I may selectively try to get some of the Donald Four Colors if the price is right.

My first Golden Age Slabbed Book. Picked up in this month's ComicLink Auctions

I purchased a complete set of all the different Carl Barks Library in Color books off the board last year and have slowly been making my way through all 141 issues. I have really been enjoying them and did not know what I had been missing by ignoring the ducks. As a result I have decided to try and pick up a few issues to add to the collection. I won these two on ComicLink today

The JIM Thor issues were actually the first slabs that I started buying. My original goal was to complete JIM 83 to 125 in 8.0 or better. It has since morphed into getting all the 1965 and before Marvel Super Hero comics in 8.0 or better with OW pages or better. I started on JIM before deciding I wanted to stay away from Cream to OW pages which is why I have 5 issues with C-OW and one with a dreaded LT-OW.

I rounded to the nearest whole number after 1965 and it set me on a quest to get 366 slabs and after the Heritage Sunday auction I am down to needing 105. Other than the JIMs I have been pretty price sensitive but for some of the JIMs I have paid more than I should have for the books. JIM is the hardest title to get nice issues from, although SGT Fury is a bit of a pain but I think that is more a matter few people carrying about the title and not bother to have them slabbed as opposed to them being in limited supply.

The vast majority of issues are 8.0's but I have some 8.5's thrown in, only a few 9's and no 9.2's but one 9.4. I am more than happy with 8.0's so trmoore I could might be able to work something out with you regarding my 96 and 124 provided you could replace them with copies in 8.0 + something.

I finally got around to scanning some of my books that I never scanned before including my Avengers 4.

As MLMeade was requesting in the JIM 83 Club thread here are scans of my JIM issues (I am still missing 7 and there are a few issues with C-OW pages that I am thinking of upgrading along with the LT-OW, of my few hundred slabs I only have 10 issues with cream pages but most of them are in my JIMs).
