  1. Love Sicario - but primary credit goes to the screenwriter, Taylor Sheridan. Dude seemingly came out of nowhere - from acting in a supporting role on Sons on Anarchy to then writing: Sicario Hell or High Water Wind River Yellowstone Best new screenwriter of the decade.
  2. ? The fans didn't like Eternals -- as shown by its "B" Cinemascore grade -- literally the worst reception out of 26 MCU movies. And on par with such classic films as: Elektra Ghost Rider Green Lantern Steel These are from surveys of fans (not critics) after they've just seen the film. When the bar is "Hey - it's a bit better than Jonah Hex" you know you're in trouble.
  3. Exactly - at $300M worldwide so far - vs. a $200M production budget - and its best box office days clearly in the rearview mirror, it's not exactly a bomb - but it's on track to lose Disney tens of millions of dollars.
  4. How the f--- did this move the "pop culture needle" or change things artistically/industry-wise? It was an easily-forgotten popcorn flick that happened to feature some Asian characters. Won't have any more of a lasting impact - even on MCU films - than Matt Damon's The Great Wall did.
  5. Huh...So Ghostbusters is bowing today on 4,300 screens, which is more than Eternals sub-4,100 screen debut.
  6. Counterpoints: 1) It's currently ranked at 71% positive on Rotten Tomatoes. 2) We're all well aware you're rooting against this film - at least in part - because it's going to dethrone your beloved Marvel Eternals. (Currently 47% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes) Again - best case scenario for Eternals this weekend is $16M domestic. Even if Ghostbusters grossly underperforms expectations, it'll do double that - at $32M.
  7. Right - and the other rumor floating around social media is that Kathleen Kennedy's contract has just been renewed for another three years, despite all the fanboy rumors for *years* that her departure was imminent.
  8. There was nuance to what he said, tho. He said that he's actually directed three superhero movies - Alien, Gladiator and Blade Runner - that the protagonist in each was essentially a superhero but that each of those films was well written enough to transcend the usual "man in tights" origin film BS. I'd agree with him. So his argument wasn't with superhero films per se, but the poor (and largely cookie cutter) writing / plotting of the vast majority of them. And personally, I'd mark both Alien and Thelma and Louise as better films than virtually any traditional superhero film that's come out since 2008.
  9. No way. It's nearing the end of its domestic run - and there are major releases each of the next two weeks that will take its screens. You really think it's got $10M more in the tank? $210M? Maybe. $213.5M? Nah.
  10. Still counts - if only for the post-credits scene featuring Gen. Ross & Tony Stark.
  11. Maybe. Maybe not. The new film clearly features a new generation of replacements - even if one or more are the grandkids of (I think) Egon. And early reviews state that it goes (almost) overboard on fan service - to the detriment of actually expanding / advancing the universe. Just saying - this is the second film in a row that largely replaces the original set of characters, even if (fingers crossed) the surviving original trio features for more than just a cameo.
  12. ? I thought we learned 15 years ago that small vocal groups on social media don’t affect actual box office receipts in the real world. Example: the failure of Snakes on a Plane Other examples: The real-world success of films like Iron Man 3 and Captain Marvel - despite selected fan hate. The internet =/= real life. Ghostbusters (2016) wasn’t a huge hit due to its mediocrity, not chauvinist internet trolls.
  13. Did..:did you just malign the original Ghostbusters? It’s hard to explain how big that film was if you don’t remember it. - $229M domestic (in 1984 dollars) - # 1 movie of the year - # 1 for 7 straight weeks I went away for a month, came back and it was still # 1 - and playing everywhere.
  14. This. While I think the Disney+ subscriber miss was the bigger driver, the Eternals under-performance (and negative critical and audience reaction) played a big part. The stock dropped more than 10% this week, and is down 20% overall since March.
  15. Best case scenario for Eternals next weekend is like $16M. That assumes a better-than-expected $28M this weekend, and a mad optimistic 43% drop-off next weekend. 50-55% is far more likely.
  16. Copying this for posterity. Reasons I think you're wrong: 1) Jason Reitman's a solid filmmaker - and Ivan Reitman's his dad. So no one has more motivation to make this really good. 2) Halloween timing has zero to do with it. The original Ghostbusters films came out in June. 3) Again - the trailers have been very well done - logical passing of the torch to the next generation, Stranger Things vibe and, as confirmed in the last trailer, we know the surviving members of the original team (including Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd - as well as Sigourney Weaver) will at least cameo. 4) Dan Aykroyd's credited as a co-writer on this one. On the one hand - sure - nobody asked for this. On the other, if you were *ever* going to do another Ghostbusters film, this is the team to do it. See also: Jurassic World, another decades later sequel that nobody asked for.
  17. Agree. I think it will do *really* well. The trailers have been surprisingly good. And Jason Reitman's got a solid track record - with films like Thank You for Smoking, Juno and Up in the Air under his belt.
  18. Not sure the Thanksgiving bonanza will matter - as next weekend you've got both Ghostbusters: Afterlife and King Richard. Sure - Resident Evil and House of Gucci bowing Thanksgiving weekend aren't in the same blockbuster league, but I have a hard time believing that any who really want to go see Eternals in the theater wouldn't have done so already in its first three weeks of release.
  19. Ditto. Again - as I've literally never read a Shang-chi appearance in my life, couldn't care less about this film. Meanwhile - I finally tried to watch New Mutants via streaming around Halloween and it was *really* disappointing. I turned it off half an hour in. Not quite Ghost Rider or Jonah Hex bad, but worse than even Thor 2. That's a shame - I was really rooting for the film, as I was excited to see a truly dark / horror take, worthy of the Demon Bear storyline. And that first trailer...literally years ago...was amazingly full of promise.
  20. AKA...a domestic total roughly equivalent to Suicide Squad's opening week ... 5 years ago.
  21. Fun fact: my high school buddy owns a page of original art from NFL SuperPro.
  22. CinemaS 1) Cinemascore of "B" indicates most of the general audience thinks its garbage. 2) Again: https://www.vice.com/en/article/n7nwkk/it-is-possible-for-eternals-to-be-both-diverse-and-bad
  23. This - exactly. Zach Snyder's on the record that this is what happened. MoS 2 (with Braniac as the primary villain) morphed into BvS - and the planned MoS 2 is (still) stuck in development hell. Warner Bros. realized - based largely on MoS's underperformance vs. Nolan's Batman trilogy, that they needed to shake things up - hence adding Batman and fast-tracking BvS.
  24. ? False. Man of Steel's (relative) under-performance led to them cancelling plans for Man of Steel 2 and pivoting instead to BvS - adding Batman and Wonder Woman. June 10, 2013: (pre-release of Man of Steel later that week): Warner Bros. announces Man of Steel 2. June 13, 2013: Man of Steel actually comes out in the U.S. July 20, 2013: Warner Bros. announces pivot to a BvS film, bringing Batman to the fore. This was not the original plan, as Zack Snyder's later confirmed that Braniac was to be the original villain for the (then-scuttled) MoS 2.
