  1. well said... to me, I am just as happy with a vg as I am with a vf....I have been collecting for a long time (started in 1988), so maybe I have "softened", if you will...but, I was always about the book, not necessarily how pristine it is, etc (not that there is anything wrong with that...as JTM said, whatever appeals to you)...as long as I pay a fair price, relative to the disclosed condition, and I can read the book without it falling apart, then to me, that is all good rick
  2. I love comics too much to be close-minded about what qualifies for inclusion my collection. I am far from "close-minded" Win...... I exclusively buy Golden Age raw books ( exception being a Tec 35 from the Detective27Kid -- already graded ) from just a few publishers that are priced a certain way, have highly deisrable and high demand characeteristics such as a classic cover, #1, origin or 1st appearance, completely unrestored, printed of a size that can be CGC graded, in VG-NM condition, with light cream or better PQ with that particular sweet, well preserved GA smell indicating the health of the book ( you know the smell ), undervalued, with a pleaseing eye appeal regardless of the grade, must be scarce to rare, have no rust on either staple, no major spine splits, water damage, missing pages or pieces, and no writing on the interior pages, with only minimal writing in pencil only on the front or back cover...........what's close-minded about that?!!
  3. Pamela Anderson... JB is the "new" PA (past her prime, but still looks nice!) Give me the 3 Jessicas'....Biel, Alba, Simpsons (yeah, I know!) gator Christina Aguilera
  4. I like that cover for some reason......

  6. hello all... I agree that slight restored books, that are almost identical to its previously unrestored state (such as smidgen of c/t or tear seal etc) should sell for a much higher percentage than say a mod, or ext....in a "sane" world, the restored copy would sell for approx what it would have sold for in its unrestored grade.. ie, if a 9.0 slight was a 8.0 before the slight, then why is the book worth less than 8.0 price (whatever % that is under or at or over guide)....a moderate book, that is maybe a 8.0, that was a vg before, should sell right about what a vg would be (maybe that is a 50% reduction, or whatever %)...and, an extensive, should likely sell at some lower % as well (depending on the "extent" of the extensive retoration)... in a perfect world, that would happen...years ago, restored books sold for much much more than the same book would today...10 years from now, who knows, maybe mass opinion will be changed again...it is true the cgc label "hurts" the book in most cases...look at the dentist's recent auctions of restored books, where the resto was disclosed...many of those books sold at 75% of guide, and some for more than unrestored guide...bet if they were in purple labels, they wouldn't have? rick
  7. no offense taken... I had, in the past, already completed a batman 1-100 run, so this was my second time doing it (first time was pre cgc)...I love the challenge, but at some point, in order for me to continue to purchase books that I have never owned before (timely's, centaurs), I have to sell books I have in order to finance new purchases (i.e. my comic budget is blown, the well is empty, etc, etc) trust me, I went back and forth, back and forth about selling vs. keeping...one alternative was to hold off new purchases for a while and keep the bat set...but, folks that know me, know I am an "aggressive" buyer...and I would have kept on purchasing, but with debt instead of equity (a road I will not travel down)...and, I do have a near complete Detective run from 27 to 103, mostly books that I had never owned, so I am not "without" my Batman fix! thanks rick Thanks for the useful post (thumbs u (thumbs u I want your Batman #47! hello all I know cgc was tougher on my 47 for some non visible flaws, but that is a VF looking unrestored book if I ever owned one...techincally, 7.0 is a fair grade, but visually, it is too tough...I expect that one to go quite high (at least I hope!) rick
  8. admittedly, I have tried to focus a little ... I will revisit batman again, but after I have climbed other mountains... I wish I had greg's patience, and I will hopefully hold onto the tec run indefinitely, but one can never tell what the future holds! good luck to any that bid, would love to see the books stay with boardies, but ultimately, I am hoping to maximize return so that I may expand other areas! rick
  9. In Rick's defense, it is a matter of economics and avarice. I once had a run of Batman 1 - 500. I really enjoyed putting the run together and Batman is clearly my favorite. But, a few years after it was done, the desire to conquer more runs, issues, keys, etc was overwheling. So, I sold them all to Rob Hughes. It was a tough decision. But, like Rick I am a victim of comic avarice and made the choice. I miss them sometimes even know, and it has been 10 years since I sold them. I find it interesting that I can't even begin to conceive of the idea of putting that run together again. I guess that itch is truly scratched. Like Rick, I try to keep my comic money separate from my "real" money. But, unlike Rick, it doesn't always work that way for me (since he has wealth beyond the dreams of avarice), but I do try. first part is true, last part is funny gator
  10. as usual, Paul seems to eloquently sum up rational thoughts... , methinks (sorry Robert, had to "steal" that) that Paul has some oratory or at least hidden written talents, or at the very least, the ability to compose and display complex thoughts in an easy to understand fashion rick

  12. yep, the sacrifices one must make...let me guess, Batman 18 is one of them? that is one of my favorites rick
  13. That must have been spine tingling, edge of your seat, thrill-a-minute viewing! it actually brought back some fond memories!....one by one, on my kitchen counter top (was the same heigth as the video camera stand)...I would video, pause, replace comic, and repeat... been meaning to get ponseti to transfer the video to digital for me.... rick
  14. nice, but I don't see our new force exclusive Future Burns set displayed anywhere ? gator
  15. super-tough to read more than a page or two, do you mean? hey not all the stories are bad....some of them are quite entertaining...nothing like a good marvel mystery #77 though (gag!) gator
  16. You're selling your Batman run? I would've guessed that was untouchable and you were planning to keep it forever. hello all... yes, it was a tough decision made a little easier...I completed batman 1-100 back in the early 90's....and when I got back into collecting a couple of years ago, I decided I was going to get the Detective run 27 up (after all Batman is my favorite, and action and batman was kind of like "been there, done that")...my good friend was in my office and we were watching an old videotape I had made of my action and batman run's 1-100, and he said he would love to put a batman run together....so, we struck a deal...I would initially finance it, and he would pay me per month, etc (bulk purchasing, opportunities, etc)...so, "my" run started out really not as my run...only after about 6 months, did we determine that he could not finance it, and I "took" over (The completist mentality in me) and made it my mission to complete it... so, last month, when I got to looking for funding sources to continue buying books that I had never owned, the logical choice was to sell the batman run that 1)I had already completed 2)that I could complete a 3rd time down the road if I so choose, 3) utilize those proceeds to finish and collect books I had never previously had (Timely's and Centaurs).... now, my tec run, will be the "last" run I would ever sell (only a Ferarri 288 GTO would preceed in my desire, and cause me to prematurely sell my prized comics)... so, keep the faith with the detectives, but know that half the fun for me, is the hunt!, but when you have no guns to hunt with, well, you know what you have to do... gator
  17. what I think would be great, if I can fund it and if Ryan has the time, would be to do the batman covers 27-37....27,29,33,35,36,37....what do you think Ryan, want to work me out a "bulk" deal rick
  18. I love Fox as well (All Top, Phantom Lady and Jo Jo GGA, I think Blue Beetle down the road, I just sold my Fantastic #1 to Fuelman, but that is a run I will revisit, the Flame is cool...) but the 2 runs I would love to work on , are of course, Mystery Men and Wonderworld ! followed closely by Weird Comics (just looks so cool)... I don't really have any interest right now in the Big 3, etc... rick Rick; I must say that you have very good taste when it comes to selecting your runs to collect. (thumbs u By far....the best 2 runs in the Fox titles are Mystery Men and Wonderworld. I've got my run of MM complete from #1 to #11, but gave up on the WW run as I was never able to find a copy of the classic cover #7 issue. In fact, I even sold off a couple of my WW books back when CGC first came onto the scene around 2000 to test the market. I believe Bedrock now has my old Allentown copy of WW #13 which is still probably the highest graded Fox book out there after all these years with a grade of 9.6 old label. Lou, The next book on my want-list is the Allentown Mystery Men 10! (Or any high grade copy. I want one bad! I absolutely love that cover.) Richard great stuff.... I can hardly wait....i am selling my batman 1-103 in the comic link Sept-Oct auction...will use proceeds to complete MMC and Captain America, and then what Centaur and Fox I can initially grab.... I get a little pay out in Dec/Jan, and from there, I will run at some more... this is fun stuff, isn't it! rick
  19. Would like to see more of your GA horror if you have the time. PS its Dennis if you like. I have three more that I plan on posting.....and two big pre-code horror purchases that I will have next month.....I will try to get the three in hand posted tomorrow night. Thanks Dennis. Scott one of my favorite Batman issues of all time...nice pick up rick
