  1. Storing Books In My Comic Book Room - Part 2 Most of the shelving in my comic room is from Ikea. All the pieces are wood, so in places I've custom fit extra shelving using a saw and drill. That's what I did below, where I made shelves that are just deep enough to fit paperbacks. I store my Star Trek and Star Wars books on these shelves. In the foreground is The Overstreet Comic Book Companion that I got signed by Robert Overstreet many years ago at a con in New York. My Overstreet Price Guide collection is stacked on the floor. The last 2 pictures show the shelves as they are now, with my DC digest collection and Dennis the Menace paperbacks, as well as old versions of ComicBase. By the way, the carpet in my comic room is purple. Purple has always been my favorite color, I think because when I was a kid my favorite football team was the Vikings.
  2. Just won this! It popped up on eBay and even though I'm already way over budget for the month I couldn't pass up throwing out an offer. Can't wait to see the inside art.
  3. Another Busy Collecting Weekend Whew, this was an exhausting weekend. There were so many incredible GA sales threads, I felt like I had to stay glued to my computer so as not to miss something. Despite all the temptation from these CGC sale threads, I ended up buying only this affordable Planet 30 from Soft-Serve. There were many others I wanted to pull the trigger on, but I had a few pending offers to Tomorrow's Treasures and I had to see how those would go (more on that in another post). I love the cover of Planet 30. I think there's an entire sub-genre of "damsel in distress with arched back." And there was stuff going on with eBay too. Sunday night I was bidding on 3 comics. The first to close was Pictorial Romances 19. I was the under bidder . It ended up closing at $228. I really wanted this next one, The Saint #4 (I suppose it goes in the headlights GGA category). In the early evening it went above my max bid. I went back and forth about raising my bid. In the end I decided to let it go. It closed at $290, way above my max bid. Here's the third comic of the evening, this classic Ghost cover. To my eye, the cover looks better than CGC 3.0 but perhaps it has some internal flaws. With the other 2 loses -- and having not heard from TT's yet -- I impulsively upped my max bid a bit. Then I went to bed, expecting to be outbid again. But I ended up winning it! I won it for $322. I then always play a game with myself. I guess it's part of buyer's remorse. If I had to do it over again, would I buy the Saint 4 or the Ghost 2? I think I'd go with the Ghost, because of condition. I'm happy with this Ghost 2 and have no temptation to upgrade. Whereas if I bought the Saint, I'd probably want to upgrade in the future. So the Ghost 2 is better as I'm able to permanently check that one off my list.
  4. Storing Books In My Comic Book Room Well, thanks Hepcat, always looking for a reason to give tours of my comic room. Let me show you how I store books. My room has a small loft with a sloped ceiling. I display Star Wars action figures on the ceiling. There's a green chair with a bookcase behind it. Here's what the bookcase looks like. Because my room is small, I have to make the best use of space. That means I have to use height as well as length. To do that, I stack books up-and-down, as well as left-to-right. On top of the shelf are my large size Dave Stevens art books, next to Khal and Khaleesi, which are next to Milo Manara bookends. Also I've got a framed Jennifer Janesko study (Janesko's one of the best modern pin-up artists IMHO, right there with Olivia), my small collection of Berthet books and prints and some CGC photos. On the right are my Gerber photo guides and the SDCC 40 Year Anniversary book. I mentioned before my cat hates me. Seriously. The only time she doesn't run from me is when I'm feeding her. The funny thing is, the cat likes hanging in my comic room (I think mostly to get away from the dog, who can't get up to the loft). And usually, she sits on the green chair.
  5. Yes, this is a great book. If only I didn't spend so much this weekend ....
  6. Modern GGA and Jim Shooter Here are a few books I've picked up lately. Bettie Page and Dave Stevens. Just shows the best GGA isn't always golden. (Although with all the amazing gold being offered this weekend it's hard to tell!) Also, I picked up the Harbinger TPB. It was only $5 and signed by Jim Shooter so couldn't pass it up.
  7. I agree, I don't think it's Baker. The challenge with collecting Baker outside comics is finding his work. There are sources that point you in the right direction but they don't get you all the way. Like, they might tell you the magazine, but not which issues. And the seller typically doesn't know anything about Matt Baker, so they don't advertise the mag as having his art. That keeps the price down, but makes it difficult to find his work.
  8. I agree. Lots of love for Baker right now, not enough for Schomburg. Others too, like Frazetta.
  9. I love that Pep cover. This one is still on my want list, haven't found a copy yet. Congrats!
  10. Completing Titles and Early Appearances of Favorite Characters/Teams Now that I’ve completed my runs of Amazing Spider-Man and Fantastic Four, I feel like I can turn to other parts of my collection. So, today I completed my run of Ultimate Spider-Man (1st series) #1-133 by picking up affordable issues of the last 2 issues I needed, #1 and 5 (I got the pair for $77). Also, I finished the 20 issue run of the Batman Family (1975-1978) by buying #8 from Lone Star. A few years ago I finished its sibling, Superman Family (1974-1982), which continued from Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen, so the series began with # 164 and ran to #222. I'm also having fun collecting early appearances of some favorite characters. I mentioned the Legion of Super-Heroes in an earlier post. For the Legion I’m trying to get all the early issues published prior to Superboy 231 (the issue when the title changes to Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes). Here are others I’m collecting: Early appearances of Teen Titans published prior to Teen Titans #1 (Feb 1966). Here’s the list (I already have the B&B issues): Brave and the Bold 54 (1st app), 60 (2nd app; first mention of TT name) Showcase 59 (3rd app) Doom Patrol 99 (1st app Changeling) The original Wonder Woman series beginning from the new look WW in #178 to the end of the series #329. The issues I need are: 178, 179, 186, 196, 197, 198, 212, 214, 215, 225, 229, 231, 256, 325 Tales of Suspense from the first appearance of Iron Man in #39 to the end of the series #99. I need 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 46, 47, 49, 50, 51, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 61, 63, 65 Strange Tales from the first appearance of Dr. Strange in #110 to the end of the series 188. I need 111, 112, 114, 115, 116, 117, 128 and Annuals 1 and 2 I’m working on finishing other parts of my collection too, like Spider-Man (the title that McFarlane started in 1990) and Submariner (1968-1974). I just need 4 more comics to finish those 2 titles. It makes me feel good to complete titles. Maybe it’s the OCD in me, but I like checking things off lists. Also, ComicBase makes it easy for me to run reports. At this moment, I have 25,742 comics in 1934 titles. 908 of those titles are complete (about 47%). There are 12,544 comics in those complete titles for an average of about 14 issues per complete title, although the average is driven down because complete titles also include 1-shots. Thanks for reading.
  11. Two Matt Bakers Via EBay BIN In the last week I've picked up 2 Matt Baker comics while browsing eBay, via Buy-It-Now. From what I can tell, there's some debate whether Baker did the cover for Zago 4. The Amash Book (Art of Glamour) lists it with a question mark, for example. But, enough people I respect think it's Baker. And to my eye it looks like Baker too. As for the Authentic Police Cases 10, the seller (newkadia) contacted me after I paid. He said when he pulled the comic he decided it was VG instead of Fine (as advertised in his eBay listing). He offered to cancel the sale, or to give me the book and refund a third of the price. Well, that's never happened to me before! I took the book+discount, and I'll definitely be shopping newkadia in the future.
  12. Actually, more like $18. And it was just good enough that I was able to see when you started your thread, but when I clicked the link it wouldn't load.
  13. Movie Magazines At the con this past Sunday, I also bought these old movie magazines. These are the mags they used to sell sometimes at the popcorn counter in theaters. (The Gone With The Wind mag is when they did a re-release. I'm not sure when the Battlestar Galactica mag came out.) I almost missed out on these mags because they weren't priced and I assumed they were expensive. But the dealer told me they were $3, $4 or $5 each, depending on which one. I jumped on that! The expensive ones were the Bond mags and ones with an LP inside. I also bought the Star Wars mag because it was cheap and had cool goggles inside.
  14. Kat123 - are all the pictures in your signature from Nugget?
  15. I figured you were involved somehow.
  16. Comic Weekend – Part 5 (Sunday - the Matt Baker eBay auctions) After getting home from the con, my attention turned to the 4 Bakers I was bidding on in eBay. Given how much I spent on the statues, I considered reducing my bids or even not bidding at all. But I knew I wouldn't win all 4 so I decided to go with it. The first one I lost in the late afternoon, Wartime Romances 8. The winning bid was $305, five dollars over my max bid. Even though I knew I wouldn't win all 4, I was still disappointed to lose this one. Of the 4, this was #2 I wanted to win. The 3 others closed late Sunday night, after I'd be asleep. But well before then I got priced out of Giant Comics Edition 13, with the bid going up passed $300. I thought about increasing my max bid but I wasn't really serious about it, not after what I spent at the con. The comic eventually closed at $435. (I felt better, because even if I increased my max bid I wouldn't have gone that high.) So I was 0-2 and down to the last 2. The one I most wanted to win was Record Book of Famous Police Cases. This is a one-shot, and this copy is the first I've ever seen. (Although probably now it'll show up again, just like Diary Secrets 13). I was least interested in the last one, Giant Comics Edition 5. I adjusted my bids. The total was the same, but I shifted some money from GCE 5 to Record Book. I was essentially giving up on GCE 5 to have a better chance at Record Book. After a restless sleep (I actually dreamed about these freaking books!) I woke up at my normal 6am. Of course the first thing I did was check on the auctions. As it turns out I won both! I won Record Book for $182 (well under my max bid) and GCE 5 for $200 (which was my max bid). Thanks for reading.
  17. Comic Weekend – Part 4 (Con at the Annandale Firehouse) Here are pictures from the con on Sunday. This is Patriot Comics's tables with all the 50% off statues. These pictures were after I pulled the ones I wanted. Their comics were 50% off too, and I bought a Champions #1 and some early X-Men. Here's a picture as you step into the con: Some of the wall books from the only serious Silver/Gold dealer. Most of the dealers were selling comics for under $2 each. I picked up a stack of Overstreet's Fan from this dealer for 75 cents each. Also some modern GGA for the same price, which were in surprisingly excellent condition even though they were unbagged and in these long boxes; I might submit them to CGC.
