  1. Maybe this high price may bring a few more 5.0's or 6.0's out. I think $15000-20000 for the 8.0 Mound City copy looks reasonable now. Define "reasonable"! This book is currently driven by supply and demand. Collectors now recognizes that SC 22 page quality is normally crm/ow. This particular 5.5 has off-white pages, and as detective27kid said " On sc22 pq is a big deal if you are looking for a separating quality over other copies". This copy deserves a premium...but $3803.64??? Regarding the Mound City 8.0, this is the only publicly high grade copy available for sale and the rest is tucked away in collections. Below are examples of other notable Silver Age keys sales which I have mentioned before. Let's use BB 28 and Avengers 1 as a comparison. The 3rd highest graded BB 28 (which there is five) sold in Comiclink for $21000. Also, let's use Avengers 1 as a comparison. A 8.0 (5th highest and 23 copies) sold in CL for $26000 and a 9.0 (4th highest and ten copies) for $20000 again in CL. Showcase 22 is in high demand and there are less high grade copies available compare to their counterparts. Man, the 5.5 got almost $4k....I can't even guess what the Mound copy will bring now. Tim (tth2), any thoughts on what you think that 8.0 Mound may bring at auction? I couldn`t even guess. The market is way too fluid for this book right now, plus I really don`t follow prices of non-NM books. I guess it wouldn`t surprise me if this book broke the $10K mark, but that`s about all i can say. I can agree with that (thumbs u It will be interesting to see where the Mound City copy ends up. Most (all?) of us here agree that it is not an 8.0 book, but that is what the label says. My guess is that it sets a new record (can it top the price paid for the 9.0s?) for SC #22 IF it gets sufficient exposure since a lot of (or most of) collectors will pay for the CGC grade, not the book in the holder. The only thing I can see that might hurt the price a bit is that they are doing the auction themselves and not on one of the big three sites (Clink, CC or Heritage). The grade on the CGC label is what it is. Sometimes we agree and sometimes we disagree. Since three graders examine the book, if one grades it a 7.5 and the other two is 8.0...than it is a 8.0 by them. I'm sure if all us boardie examine the book we'll have all different grades and disagree with each other. Also, CGC uses a grading technique which is consistent and accepted by most. CGC is approaching its ten year anniversary, and this present day, we have not seen a copy over 9.0. Why are there no 9.0 and above...because it may not exist? The one thing is...I don't see this copy selling for less than 10k. There is too much support under 10k for this book, because I'll be a buyer.
  2. That 6.0 by Mark has off white/white pages too. Many of us boardies agrees that 6.0 and above are difficult to find. (thumbs u

  4. I'm in the market for a high grade GL 7, but no luck. Very tough book. Even Metropolis has not had one in ages (and they can find pretty much anything). The problem with 7 is Sinestro doesn't appear on the cover and 7 is so tough to find. Looks like there's a very nice copy of 7 in the Mound City collection, though. That is a nice copy. Too bad it's not graded. I think for the long term, GL 7 should do very well. It is graded and is a 9.0. So, it ranks up there. It really is too bad he is not on the cover. Wow, it's a 9.0. Imagine if he was on the cover, this issue would look so cool!

  7. SC22 will lift all boats, but hyper and speculated price increases will be concentrated in SC22. I think 23 is a much more popular book than 24 since it has the second app., atom bomb cover, and of course pink cover (pink cover lovers).

Showcase 22 is in high demand and there are less high grade copies available compare to their counterparts. I wouldn't argue that the price is unreasonable given the market. I'm just saying that the market is not being driven by reason, or at least by anything reasonable related to appreciation of comics. Call it irrational exhuberance! I would say that prices are being driven by demand, not supply. The supply a year or two ago was the same as it is today (actually less, because copies are coming out of the woodwork now). So why is the price suddenly going up? Because demand has gone crazy. And why has demand gone crazy? Because of pure speculation. People want to get a copy to invest in hoped for profits down the road (or maybe next week). I do agree...it's irrational exuberance! This SC 22 5.5 sold for double what a BB28 in 5.5 and one and a half time a Avengers 1 in 5.5. At this rate it is the second most valued DC Silver Age comic and this is not based on OSPG prices. Also, the data that Peewee22, the help with others, and I collected confirms the supply and the scarcity of higher grade copies. (thumbs u

  12. I don't mean to be a spoil sport, but John72Tex's raw copy in the threads doesn't seem to be a 6.0. It's a nice copy but the back has a crease and some tears. It's posted in the grading forum right now, with grades running from 4.5-5.0. Not trying to pick on anyone, but just fyi. Yeah, I'd probably put just CGC graded in here. I mean, aman619 has cornered the market on raw 22s !! Good suggestion Peewee2. I actually was thinking about this for a while...I just wanted to be fair and let everyone have a chance. As of today, the list will only contain CGC 6.0 and above copies only, since this is the only way to verify it's a 6.0 or higher (not trying to say it's not a 6.0+). Get your copies graded and if it score a 6.0 and above, we will include it here. ---Updated list 9/05/09 ---- Top high grade sales and holders of CGC Showcase 22: 9.0 Heritage auction ow 9.0 ComicLink auction ow 8.5 Nicolas Cage Heritage auction crm/ow 8.5 Doc Joe from threads crm/ow 8.0 Mound City crm/ow (4th copy not in CGC census yet) 8.0 Metropolis Comics private sale 8.0 Private collector crm/ow 7.5 Peewee from threads ow/w 7.5 Palamas from threads crm/ow 7.0 SilverRich from threads crm/ow 7.0 Heritage auction crm/ow 7.0 ComicLink crm/ow 7.0 ComicLink lt/ow 6.5 ComicLink ow/w 6.5 ComicLink ow 6.5 ComicLink crm/ow 6.0 Showcase22gr1959 from thread white 6.0 M. 16. Ill try it again, since Im assuming you want accuracy on your list. There are 2 8.5 copies, one of them that Doc Joe has which he posted in this thread that he purchased from Metropolis. The other 8.5 is the Nic Cage copy that sold through Heritage in 2002. They are different copies. You saw his copy, here is the link to the Nic Cage 8.5 - http://comics.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=804&Lot_No=5398&src=pr TeddieMercede, I have checked the GPA data and found that the 8.5 had the same CGC number as Doc Joe. This is to confirm that the Metropolis/Comic Connect is the Doc Joe copy. Thanks again for pointing this out.

  18. Wow....that is high to me....Rick, (Detective27) what do you think? I have a strong "feeling" as to where the price both "should" go, and "might" end up... however, I have found from past experience that when I am an active participant , I should keep my cards "close to me" I'll say this much. I think this book, and this book alone, will be the preamble for HG 22s to come over the years... Uh oh, if Rick is in the house then the rest of us might as well forget about chasing it. Hey, Rick is a smart man....and this means there is a price he will pay....and will NOT pay. To make a good investment...pay the right price. Brannon, I think high grade SC22's prices are very volatile right now. Especially with major top holders not selling, so supply is limited.

  21. I'd like to know the owner of this one,,, http://www.comicspriceguide.com/blog/post/2008/08/21/Showcase-22-CGC-60-Clears-3K.aspx : I wonder who...I was also watching this auction for this book on ebay that day. I couldn't believe it went for so much back then. Looks cheap now. BTW, on the showcase22gr1959 6.0 above census, there are only three SC 22 with page quality off-white to white or higer. Here it is: 7.5 6.5 6.0

  23. There are nine SC22 7.0 and nine SC22 6.0 in the CGC census. There has to be some other boardie that can show us their copy to add to the high grade list.
