  1. MrBedrock has an absolutely stunning copy of this book. It might be my favorite book anyone has posted in this forum.

Do you remember which thread? I find things like this impossible to search for. I really want to see this copy that even cheetah covets! Wally Wood... :cloud9:

i have carte blanche authority to post my geek's books.

    strangeworlds5.jpg

That's the one. It's got it all.

    Everyone should have a copy.

    StrangeWorlds5.jpg

Wow. Thanks for that, guys. Those are the two nicest copies of that book that I've ever seen. Do you guys agree that these are among the toughest Avons to find?

    Super cool books. :applause:

  2. I really like that Navy Combat 8 cover. Don't remember seeing it before. :applause:

When I got home from work today, I found this little guy on my doorstep:

I'm really liking the Hollingsworth art inside. It's simply brilliant.

The comic is worth owning just for the Freas' painted cover but it also contains my favorite Hollingsworth story. (thumbs u

Beautiful copy... inside and out. :golfclap:

Thanks, guys. Yeah, I love getting books like this for the first time. And yet, other sirens are calling... if only I could find a nice copy of Strange Worlds 4 or 5. These Avons are super cool.

  3. Hey Gator!

Whats the nicest restored book you have owned?

(nice = desirability + eye appeal + $$$ factor combined )

Allentown Marvel 1 at a slight cgc 9.2 (cover cleaned, tear seal)

    Holy spoon

    That book is beyond awesome.

And the slight-job on that particulat book sounds like a pre restoe 8.5/9.0 ...

Probably kickin yourself for lettin that smoker go. You sold it for a song?

    still have it (thumbs u

Good man! Marvel 1 will always be the coolest comic to me. Can you show it to us?

  4. My goodness, just to own one of those Brundage or Bok pulps in such amazing condition, let alone having a collection of 'em. (worship)

Once again, those pulp covers are magnificent...

    Thanks, Steve. :)

    Here are a couple more.

    Weird Tales (July 1936)

That's an incredible book. I can't believe the condition and color. How do you store them to minimize damage to the overwrap? I have a few 50s Weird Tales in Mylites with fullbacks. Is that the best thing?

  5. Nice copy pinball! :applause:

In case anyone's feeling smug about their CSS 22 ownership, this fellow's got the cover OA!!! Can you imagine?

We should have a contest to see who can do the most interesting job coloring it in.

That's so funny, About an hour ago, I downloaded the image and opened it in Photoshop to do that very thing!

Great minds think alike. (thumbs u

  6. Prompted by another thread, I decided to update this group shot even though this is probably the ugliest group shot I've ever produced. A few stray books didn't make it to the shots ... but you should get the idea :)

    Atlas2011GroupShot.jpg

I love that War Adventures 12 cover. Very impressive. That probably only took you a decade or so. (worship)

  7. You know, whether it is Robojo or Lexerific or Cdpaoli or Collectors_comics, these jackholes just seem to hate comic books and comic collectors. They delight in taking advantage of the unsuspecting, the trusting, and the outright naive. And in doing so, they erode trust, confidence and respect for our favorite pastime. The whole time, patting themselves on the back for how clever they've been.

I'm sick of these guys. If someone was new to comic collecting, bought from one of these useless chumps, and found out they were screwed later, do you think they are more or less interested in comics? I've never been burned by any of these guys but it saddens me to think of the people who have.

Mark Zaid has been awesome at pursuing his favorite criminal. I know many of you have put a lot of time into trying to bust up the other insufficiently_thoughtful_persons. And that is all awesome work. It just seems like they've always been around, way before the internet. But I look forward to the day when they can be run out of town and their days of making a quick buck at someone else's expense are over.

    rantrant

Long winded way of saying how glad I am for this community and all the guys here on the boards fighting for some sort of integrity and honesty in comic collecting.

  8. My first post in this thread. Just received this today. I paid too much for it but I just love the inappropriateness of this cover. I guess it's the "Williamsport Copy"? (shrug)

Where is that pedigree book when you need it...

Thats a pretty book. I was paying tribute to the great MAD writer Frank Jacobs on a different comic book forum a few years back, and got everyone so MAD they censored me. The mods removed my posts and literally told me I was just a troll and to watch my step. :sumo: Heres the verses......

    See the man.......

    he is a fisherman.....

    he has a boat.......

on saturdays he likes to go fishing in his boat......

    fish, fish, fish.......

he has never missed a saturday yet.......

thats because the fisherman is not married.......

    See the woman........

    she is the fishermans date.......

she does not like to fish, but she likes to talk.......

    talk, talk, talk.........

she likes to talk about getting married......

she likes to talk about raising a family......

she likes to talk about buying a house......

she thinks fishing is a waste of time.......

the man is tired of listening to the woman talk about everything except fishing.....

he says fishermen should be quiet because fish can hear pretty good......

he is going to help the woman be a little quieter.......

    hush, hush, hush.......

soon the woman will be very very quiet.......

and the man will be able to continue fishing ......

even though he is out of worms........

good thing he has his knife with him.

That made me laugh. I bit dark but knowing the Frank Jacobs reference it's well done. Sorry to hear the other forum members didn't get the joke. lol

Yeah, it's pretty nice and tough to find in high grade with the black cover. Now I just need to find my Crime Suspense 22...

  9. From comicbookpedigrees.com...

    WILLIAMSPORT

Williamsport, PA is known more as the home of the Little League World Series than for a place where classic comics can be found. However, Jack Juka found the "mother lode" of comics there. After buying at a local convention what he called the nicest pair of Captain America #78's he had ever seen, Jack was informed that this was just the tip of the iceberg. This collection, being brokered by dealer and comic shop owner Joe Figured, contained over 3,000 total comics from the start of the 40s to the end of the 50s, most of which were bought off the newsstand. Digging deep into his retirement fund, and with the support of his wife Julie, Jack finally struck a deal for what he would later call the Williamsport Collection.

Although the collection contained over 3000 comics in various grades, it was the full runs of Batman and Superman that make this collection stand out. No other Golden Age pedigree contains complete runs of these titles past #100, and none possess the high grades found in the Williamsport collection. To put it in perspective, almost half of the highest graded copies for 1950's Superman and Batman issues on CGC's census are held by the Williamsport copy.

The problem is that the CGC label doesn't identify it as a pedigree and there was no certificate, So now, how does one confirm the book as a Williamsport copy? I don't see any identifying marks. Any thoughts?

"Senator KEFAUVER. This is the July one. It seems to be a man with a woman in a boat and he is choking her to death here with a crowbar. Is that in good taste?

    Mr. GAINES. I think so.

Mr. HANNOCH. How could it be worse?" (William Gaines Senate Testimony, http://www.thecomicbooks.com/gaines.html)

  11. I believe tape of any kind is a danger to my precious comic books. I don't want it anywhere near my collection. How many times do you have to flirt with disaster pulling a book out of a bag having to pass by "the tape gauntlet" every time before people stop putting tape near their books. Haven't we all been burned at one time or other?

Knowing that, why would anyone leave the tape on the bag when they pull the comic out?

Anyone that does deserves to have the tape stick to the front of the comic.

True, but have you ever tried taking tape off mylar? Not pretty.

Simple solution (especially for valuable books): double-bagging, ...larger, sealed mylar bag on outside; interior mylar bag untaped/unglued. (thumbs u

That's not a bad idea, It's just a lot of mylar between the book and I as I gaze with affection at it's glossy goodness. DiceX has a good point also. I've only ever used one or two kinds of scotch tape.
