    That's a bit of a wait. :(

But, I admit despite Harry being portrayed as a fool, and ho-hum "Sontaran Experiment," It'll be a pretty good watch. (thumbsu

"Robot" being very sentimental to me because it's the first episode I ever watched of the series, then the "timeless" metaphor one "Ark in Space," the now classic "Genesis of the Daleks," and just the too-cool for a five-year-old "Revenge of the Cybermen" (loved the suits and music.

I literally thought these shows were real when I was six! lol

Patrick Troughton was always one of my favorite doctors.

I was first exposed to T. Baker, then Davison, and finally (back to)  Pertwee, before Hartnell and Troughton.  So, I didn't appreciate Patrick's fun doctor as much at the time, as the bar was set pretty high (...and pretty low C. Baker and McCoy) with the first three I saw.  I think the companions played better off him, like the T. Baker/Davison years (sans Adric.)

Kind of interested in listening to "The Power of the Daleks" commentary now. I mean Anneke Wills was spilling the beans about everything, even in the documentaries.

I haven't TIME for this thread. :) However nobody beats the second Doctor.<3

Just finished "The Tenth Planet" and it's commentary.

I had no idea how difficult William Hartnell was to the cast and crew. Everybody seemed to breath a sigh a relief when Patrick came aboard.

Watching the Hartnell interview about being a pantomime, I kept thinking "What an a-hole." LOL

  5. Barnes & Nobles have older Doctor Who DVD's on sale for 40-50% off for Father's Day.

Just bought "The Tenth Planet" because I enjoyed last year's Christmas Special so much.

Might pick up "kinda" and the "Lost in Time" episodes next.

I just love all the extras. :whee:

  6. I really wanted to love this movie, after watching the fun trailer.

    It just felt flat.

The set pieces were as tired as a 30's serial trying to impossibly stay on budget.

The cast tried with all their might, but I only could see Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gilliam stuck in a jungle.

There really was no mortal stakes until everyone was down to a bar, the villain was bland (maybe another kid should have played that character to round out the character arcs- it would have been a mystery to who it was) and Nick Jonas moped wayyy too much.  The kid sentimentality really rivaled Home Alone.

After a while, it's like, "Oh shut it! You just pushed a friend of a cliff and helicopter!"

I might like it better the second time, but for now...

I started watching the show at the beginning of Tom Baker and you couldn't take your eyes off the television for one second. Man I had a childhood crush on Sarah Jane Smith (RIP) :{  The Genenesis of the Daleks was the coolest program to date I had scene in the sci-fi category. I believe you can watch some of the episodes on Demand somewhere but alot of them were missing.

    Me too.

    but...

A bit off topic, I just discovered they’re releasing the 1st Tom Baker season (season 12) on blu-ray.

I don’t expect any massive improvement in picture quality. Footage shot on video is pretty much what it is.

But I might plunk down for this and replace my DVDs for 2 reasons:

    1) having an entire season on blu-ray is probably going to take up a lot less room than all those stories on DVD.

    2) I’m REALLY hoping the blu-rays maintain the original aspect ratio. One of the things that’s always bugged me about the DVDs is they’re formatted to fit my TV screen. And since screens are now rectangular that means the image gets cropped. Hoping they correct that. :wishluck:

I hope they have all the fun extras that were in the dvds too.

    Me too.

It was watchable in a Fantastic Four (2005) kind of way.

No way better than Wonder Woman though.

Not god-awful, but way too much padding from secondary characters (the Russian family hiding under furniture, the thief in the beginning who is rather chatty with Batman after shooting at him, etc.)

Does it hold it's own against the Matt Reeves modern Planet of Apes trilogy in your opinion?

To me 1968 Planet of the Apes is a real special movie. Never seems to get old.

    It doesn't.

I think Schaffner's politics of the era were more painted more universally and not as heavy-handed as the ones like War of the Planet of the Apes.

Despite, the rough effects in the 60's, it still feels realer than some of "cutting-edge CG" in the first two.  F-it, the second one had instances that pulled you right out the movie (apes of horseback.)  If the motion-actors weren't so good, the movie would have been a total loss.

The Reeves films are incredibly strong as a whole, but very weak separately. That's my opinion.

Plus, who doesn't tire of looking at Linda Harrison?  It's funny to see her in ape make-up in a make-up test with Edward G. Robinson.

Are we really comparing Jordan to Hopkins' Lector lol.

It was the first one I could think of.

I was using Silence of the Lambs as an analogy.  No one was taking horror films too seriously at the time.  No one expected Hopkins to walk off into people's subconscious like he did in '91, despite his body of work at the time.  I was just comparing the horror genre actors to the funny book ones now.

Nowadays, TV shows like Criminal Minds and various James Patterson movies have driven the whole UNSUB-thing into the ground and will probably never be taken seriously again anyway.

The guy had like half an hour of screen time.   Good character as far as why he did what he did but I didn't think the acting was anything special, just my opinion.

Some actors can make more of an impression in their roles with a more limited amount of time.

Anthony Hopkins won an Oscar for his villainous role that only had 16 minutes of screen time in "Silence of the Lambs." :makepoint:
