  1. The wait for the others continues At the end of October I submitted another batch of books to CGC. I submitted on four different tiers, "standard", "economy", "value", and "modern". I went to the Post Office today to pick up my "standard" submission. CGC is a little behind on the 15 business days for this tier. The couple of books I submitted on the "modern" tier are "graded" as of today. The "economy" and "value" tier are still at "verified". I expect all of these books to be back to me sometime at the end of January 2014. To be honest I'm not that concerned on when they are coming back. It would be nice to have them sooner. But, since these are books that are going right back into my collection, I can wait. These are the books that came back today. ASM #50, ASM #129, and Iron Man #55. I had always wanted to get them graded, but had put it off because of the expense. I'll post the rest as they come in. Thanks for reading, Mike To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. 2. I solve this by displaying my scans instead of the originals. I print the scans in 11x17 format and frame them. So they are larger than the originals and, I think, display better. And if they do get damaged by the Sun, I can just print another. UV glass does not offer 100% protection from light damage. So why chance it? Mike
  3. Hi Rune, An interesting journal entry. Thanks for taking the time to post on this subject. Flat Storage: Unslabbed comics (I really don't know about how slabbed comics will fair if laid flat) will develop a spine roll over time if not stored upright. I've seen this many times over my 35 years of collecting. I'n not sure of the exact cause (probably the weight of the comics on top don't help). But since it happens, I try to avoid it. I store my CGC books upright because the boxes make it conducive to do so. It would be tough getting that CGC slab off of the bottom of books that are piled 30 high. It's way easier if they are stored upright. Airtight environment: Does CGC claim their inner sleeve is airtight/watertight? I hadn't heard that. Temperature, light and humidity: I totally agree. Keep it cool, keep it dark, and keep it dry. In my opinion this is probably the most important thing you can do to extend the life of your comic books. Mike
  4. Scanning all of those books took longer than I thought! Because of the journal entry "DO WE COLLECT SERIAL NUMBERS or GRADED COMIC BOOKS" by XXXPHEONIX http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=6856669#Post6856669 I decided to scan all 31 of my Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane book s and put very short "blurbs" by each one. Prior to this I hadn't given much thought about uploading scans. I figured It wasn't that big a deal. Well, I found out a lot of people like to look at a collection with scans. After looking at other sets on the board, I guess I do too. All the scans are 800 pixels across so you should get some detail of each book (I hope they uploaded in that resolution). If you have any feedback on how I can make the presentation better let me know. I am going to work on scanning the rest of my books at time allows. 5. Thor and more Thor! I excitedly open my second box from CGC in as many business days. These are (15) Thor comics from the bronze age. Like the first batch I received, these are books that I had collected mostly during the 80's. I like to collect Thor for two reasons. First, I think the stories are cool. Second, back in the 80s as well as now, they were a lot less expensive compared to other comics, like the Amazing Spider-Man from, the same era. I was very happy to see one of my 30 cent variants get a 9.6. Hopefully my photo collage will come through. Thanks for looking, Mike To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. 6. Or "Only one surprise!" Well, I finally got my first batch of 20 books back from CGC. I expect the other 15 to arrive today or Monday. These are books I have in my collection that I pulled to get a "value tier" on a bulk CGC grading submission. So on this batch I didn't focus on any one title, just what looked to be in "high grade". Overall I'm happy with my grades. I must have missed something when I "cover graded" my Brave and the Bold #106. It came back a lot lower than I was expecting. The rest of the books came back pretty close to the grades expected. I am one of those people who looks at the grades before the books arrive, but that doesn't lessen the excitement for me of opening up the box to see the actual books. I've included some pictures. 7. Nice list of books! Getting Action Comics in the early 400s in high grade is truly a feat. Especially the 100 pagers. Mike
  8. I love getting CGC books but don't like the stickers. Well, this is my first journal entry. Yesterday I received 11 CGC books that I won at a ComicLink auction. I'm always excited to get my purchases even though I know exactly what's coming. I thought "Oh wow, 11 new books for my collection!" Then I remembered that I would have to remove 11 Comiclink stickers from my CGC cases. I'm not sure how others feel about this, but I like my CGC cases free from dealer stickers. I'm not sure what adhesives the ComicLink stickers use, but ALL of it seems to get left on the case when you peel off the sticker. In this case masking tape is your friend. Just tear off a strip and fold it into a circle with the sticky side facing out. Place your fingers in it and start sticking it to the old adhesive. It will start to pull it right off. Repeat as necessary. Hope this helps others. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.
