  1. My original post was meant tongue-in-cheek. :sorry:

I have no problem with posting the book here and just wanted to encourage posting in the pre-code thread.

My motto is post early and often. :foryou:

No worries, sometimes it is hard to tell in posts as humor or sarcasm or whatever intended flavor is lost. Whenever I see the :rulez: I always feel like someone has been slapped...

  2. This is a SA thread. :rulez:

It would be great if you could post it here linky . :foryou:

I get that that is an older book, but if I had won that I would have posted it here too. Being from one of the big Atlas/Marvel pre-hero titles, and one of the longest running, it can be hard to know where the cutoff is (I sure don't). I like to see those types of books here, and looking back through this thread's history you see plenty of them. They fall through the crack between GA and SA for me. (I guess they are technically Atom Age?) Atlas books from this era have always felt like early SA to me, even though I know that technically they aren't.

Now if it had been Mystic or Astonishing or one of those titles that never led to a hero book that is an easy call. But to me, wrong or right, JIM is a Marvel pre-hero book because it eventually gave rise to a hero. This may be a creative interpretation of the thread title and rules, but that is just how I have always seen it. I realize that many will probably disagree with me on this, and I am happy to be educated on the nuances of the ages and designations. :foryou:

  3. Time to :bump: this thread to see if anyone won any of those beauties in the Clink auction. It will likely be a while before we see a cavalcade of HG like that again. I had what I would call some fairly strong lowball bids on several that got killed. (Though, in the spirit of full disclosure, Korvac did tempt me out of some funds in his latest sales thread so I am not without a nice book this month.)

  4. I am looking at this from a Census standpoint, many boardies have their opinion as what is HG, but a 9.2 modern is not HG or maybe even copper age and late bronze, but if a book is hard to find in HG based on the book itself would you then adjust to what the highest grade for that book. 9.6-9.0, 9.8-9.2 or based on the number of copies exists 9.0 and above for Bronze age and older book.

Well, you're not looking at what's High Grade, then.

You're looking at 'at what point does a specific book become high enough grade for it to be collectible?'.

'Grade' is an objective, clearly defined assessment of a book's physical condition with no regard for its scarcity or desirability.

    +1

There are two questions here: grade AND desirability that are getting conflated. An 8.0 is HG for me, for example, but that is not a desirable grade for a book that came out last week (or ASM #300 for that matter). Just as everyone may differ on their threshold for HG they will also differ on the cutoff for desirability of different grades for different books.

  5. I tend to be happy with copies in the 6.0 range, but seeing all the beauties here has caused me to reach for a few higher grade books than I would have typically gone for before joining the boards. I do know that before joining the boards/registry I was more worried about eye appeal and less worried about the number in the upper left corner. Nowadays I do sometimes get caught up and buy the number and get a twinge of a stomach ache afterwards (but generally a pretty book too).

  6. 37500 less assumed 10% metro vig= 27500 return over 7 years. That is approx 44% roi. That is approx 6% return per annum. Accounting for capital gains tax and inflation mark should net approx 3% a year on the initial investment.

And how does that work out with the dollar's slide, particularly in the last several months? I just booked some travel in Australia and the exchange rate killed me (paid 80 cents US for an Aussie dollar last summer and now it is $1.12 US per Aussie dollar :o ).

  7. Great run to acquire! Are you going for Amazing Adult Fantasy next?

Yep, I've been working on that one but there are some tough books in there. I am missing #8, 9 & 13. #8 has a tendency to have funny variations in the cover reds, #9 is tough for condition and typically has bad PQ, and I have just had bad luck with #13. I try to go with 6.0 or higher and all those books (plus the #14, which I have raw but my copy has chipping) are tough in anywhere near attractive mid-grade.

  8. I posted this in the group shot thread as well, but of course it is most appropriate here. This is my recently completed run of Amazing Adventures #1-6, which I finally finished by picking up the #1 (which was an arch-nemesis book for me). I need to upgrade the #2, and eventually the #4, but overall I am really happy with completing this small but very cool run.

  9. I was kind of wanting an option between "love SS" and "never". I personally don't do autographs, but I don't have anything against someone else getting one.

I can see that. Maybe "love" was a strong word to use in the poll but I do see what you mean.

On low to mid-grade... fine. But It irks my innards when people SS a high grade silver age book. There's so many things for people to sign, why have them sign a HG comic cover? It seems it's all about the 'flip' and making a buck in the higher grade cases.

+1 -- this is basically my position too. I like signatures on the first page, personally, but I have also gotten some books signed on the cover. For pre-hero it would always be mid to lower grade and on the first page if I can help it. Ultra high grade (9.6-9.8) is a terrible option for an autograph IMO.

  10. Time for a :bump: on this thread to start a discussion that I have been interested in for a while. I've gotten flashes of an opinion on this subject, and the idea of doing a poll to bring the discussion to the fore is just too much to resist (poll runs until Sunday at noon CST):

  11. Thanks. I always antd this from a kid. Now I'm going to give it to my kid ( in about 20 years from now lol ) its tought to come by a complete working one. And everytime I see one in auction there is a bidding war for it.

I got my MIB example (plastic window is busted out, but otherwise the box is really nice) for Christmas a few years ago from my brother. He knew I was looking for one and saw it in an antique mall marked "Robot" on the price tag. He wouldn't say what he paid, but I am sure it was under $100 and would bet it was under $50.

  12. Probably true. While Marvel westerns may not ever be in demand like the hero books, I can see them hitting the pre-hero Marvel level.

.....the pre heros have Kirby and Ditko in almost every issue. I think that drives those prices. The westerns are still pretty neat, I like 'em. GOD BLESS...

-jimbo(a friend of jesus) (thumbs u

Great point. I'll alter my statement to "Kirby westerns"!

You might also get additional demand from people collecting the later superhero runs of books like Strange Tales, TOS and TTA who also want the pre-hero books because they are completists. You wouldn't get that in the Westerns. 2c
