  1. I have a small con tomorrow with mostly weekend dealers-these guys generally use Overstreet as a guide. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for any Vengeance of Bane's, but what do you think would be a good target price?

I was to find high grade copies of this book for $2 each last year. It's super hot right now because of the movie, and right now is probably the worst time to buy because of the hype. Give it a couple years and you'll be able to get this for less than $20.

  2. So what happens when a modern is hot. Do you lust after another one or wait?
Ummm... I'm pretty loyal to my focus. I look at it like a marriage really. ;)

I'm always hot to start a new focus because I love getting slabs in the mail. Calculating the cost of doing this is usually enough to deter me. Usually.

  3. yeah still not getting why everyone knowing who he was made Ex Machina a bust (investment speaking). Was the print run massive?

I think the lesson here is most singles do not appreciate in value. 90% or more of modern back issues will sell at cover or below. Mostly below. It's truly rare that something will explode in value over a long period of time, and when it does it's usually tied to an upcoming movie or tv series.

  4. still wonder why you can get ex machina for dirt cheap...maybe saga will spark interest in it.

It'll spark interest in the trades, but I still don't think it will do anything for the singles. The first few Y singles are pricey because BKV was a relative unknown at the time and Y #1 was published at perhaps the lowest point of the direct market in terms of overall comic sales, meaning it was severely under ordered. By the time Ex Machina came out, everyone knew who BKV was and the market was in a better place.

  5. Why not compare? Because there are numerous examples of titles that could have been Chew at this point. Every single one fizzled. Just playing the odds. (thumbs u

we're overdue for another Chew...eventually i'll stop rolling snake eyes and get those double sixes.

I'm afraid it just doesn't work that way. You also appear to be missing the hot titles lately. 2c

There are too many eyes on Image #1's right now for us to see the next Chew anytime soon.

Complete speculation based on nothing but my gut instinct - the next Chew is a Dark Horse book coming out in the next few months.

THE LAST GENERATION OF HEROES IS HERE!

Twenty years ago, the first-ever superheroes debuted without warning and forever altered our global culture! Now, the generation born in their wake fight to claim their place in a world evolved beyond them! Written by Eisner & Harvey award-winner JOE KEATINGE and illustrated by ELEPHANTMEN and POPGUN's ANDRE SZYMANOWICZ, HELL YEAH combines the over-the-top excitement of the original Image Comics launch with modern, innovative storytelling. It all begins with a giant-sized first issue containing a full thirty-two pages of story with no ads for the regular price of just $2.99!

Just looked at a preview and the art's not doing it for me.

  7. Haunt was very different, as that had the McFarlane tie-in.

I can't see initial orders being more than say 30-35K. Not a great book for investment, but should ride a long $10 plateau, so there is definitely money to be made. I have it one of my mid-range books, I'm pre-ordering just 10. Many books I take chances on I try to hit that 15 to 20 copy range. This won't be over-ordered, I still think it's a sell-out first weekend it's released, straight to a second print.

BKV is a creator with a lot of appeal coming back to comics after a hiatus. McFarlane is arguably more popular, but Haunt was the best comparison I could come up with for an Image book. If it only does 35K, then I think it will be a sell out for sure.

  8. horrible speculation comic but great reading comic.

I think I agree with you about this being a bad comic to speculate on...in the short term. Even if it does 50-60K, it will be under ordered considering what it is. The advanced reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, so I think it's a book people will be interested in long term.

  9. We're less than a month away, so might as well start the discussion now. :D

I was thinking about what kind of numbers this book will do. It's been heavily hyped and highly anticipated, so I don't think it's going to take anyone by surprise like a Chew or a NonPlayer. The only Image comic from recent years that I can recall being as anticipated by fans was Kirkman/McFarlane on Haunt back in 2009. Haunt #1 ended up being in the top 30 books for the month with just over 50K sold.

Let's set the over/under for SAGA at 60K.

    Any predictions?

  10. Is Alpha Girl 1 good or bad read/art? My LCS was supposed to have ordered me 5 copies but I still haven't seen them even after I was assured that there was some error by Diamond. I really hate to spend more than cover for that book and then find out that its not a good read and that the art is subpar. Thanks for the insight.

I haven't read, so I can say whether or not the story is good. I didn't care for the art though. I thought about pre-ordering it, but decided against. I had another chance to snag a copy at the LCS, but the art turned me off.

  11. So Fatale 1 is getting a third print, and 2 is getting a second print. Are there any differences between covers? I haven't seen a copy yet...

Fatale #1 3rd print arrives 2/22, the 2nd print of #2 comes in the week after. I'm guessing we'll see black and white versions of the Beast cover for the 3rd printing of #1 and a black and white version of #2 for that reprint.
