  1. Neal Adams is a brilliant artist, but IMO his art can't tell a story all by itself the way Kirby's art can.
  2. Mike Royer isn't an embellisher. He never felt his job was to "take away" from the artist, especially Kirby, so he inked exactly what Kirby, and everyone else he's ever inked, penciled. If he were an embellisher, he never would have been hired by Kirby after auditioning in JK's home with the King looking over his shoulder. And MR will tell you himself, he didn't work for DC Comics, he worked for Jack Kirby. I'm not saying JK's work by other inkers isn't good; Kirby/Sinnott is my favorite FF duo, but MR was 100% faithful to JK's pencils. He would never dream of taking an eraser to JK"s background pencils like Colletta did- He was fast enough to ink AND letter JK's 3 daily pages. "Bringing out Kirby's strengths" means making it look less JK?
  3. They way I understood it from listening to a radio show interview with Kirby where Stan Lee called in, they would discuss the story plot for the issue, Kirby would layout the art (which included some word balloons iirc), and Lee would fill in the dialogue based on their discussion and the art in each panel. I imagine contributions varied from issue to issue.
  4. You misunderstand. No one walked out. Others in the panel agreed with Mike before the panel started, but clammed up when they heard the boos. I should have said "threw him under the bus", or some other term describing two-faced cowardice
  5. I love how these threads turn into "Appreciation" threads Yellow.
  6. At a convention many years ago Mike Royer suggested that as 60's Kirby fans grew and matured, Kirby's stories didn't always grow and mature with them, and that he was still "targeting" the younger readers. He actually got some "boos" from the crowd, and all the others on the panel who agreed with him before the panel began suddenly left him on his own.
  7. You described him perfectly 1) The only thing that will stop a story in mid sentence is an attractive Cosplayer walking by, who he will then call over. 2) I can't remember who told him, but decades ago someone said, "Mike, you have to make your own perks." He really took that to heart. 3) And the ladies love him back He has a great Sean Young story. He truly loves his fans, and if someone were to bring some of his cartoon work to his table, you will make his day because it saddens him that this work is so little known.
  8. Wow. I keep reading reasons to not use eBay.
  9. I just wanted to give everyone attending SDCC this year a heads up that Mike Royer plans to bring comics form his personal collection to sell- No gems- 7.0-9.0 mostly Eternals, Kamandi, some Fourth World, and more. Next week I'll try to get a clearer idea of what they will be. He's still trying to determine if they're providing him with a table, or if he'll be in Artist's Alley, or if he's "just" a Special Guest like 2017. If it's the latter, he'll likely be hanging out at The Kirby Museum. Hope to see some of you
  10. I went back a few pages to see if there is a thread I could add this to, but couldn't. 11. I wonder if he'd do better trying to avoid the returns If that's what it is.
  12. +1 But part of that reboot will be Metamorpha, but that's ok compared to many of the other switches.
  13. Damn, I would have posted these very words.
  14. I think it's kinda cool looking. As long as it stays there.
