Plus: Retailer Event to Preview Upcoming Announcements

As the launch of Oni Press’s EC Comics revival draws near, the publisher has announced an online retailer event on June 27 to offer a preview of their plans for the next two years, including announcements to be made at Comic-Con in San Diego. All retailers who participate will be eligible to receive a variant cover for Epitaphs from the Abyss #1 by an artist to be revealed later.

Oni also announced it will offer 10 sets of retailer variant covers by Robert Hack for Epitaphs from the Abyss #1 and Cruel Universe #1. The retailer variants will have a minimum order of 250 per issue per retailer.

The online event will be restricted to retailers with active Diamond or Lunar accounts, and Oni noted that the information on the call will be considered confidential; retailers who leak the information to the public may be excluded from further events.

“So far, the public has only glimpsed the very first steps of Oni’s ambitious, long-term plan to restore the legendary EC Comics to its rightful place as one of the industry’s most fearless, boundary-breaking forces,” said Oni Press President & Publisher Hunter Gorinson in a statement accompanying the announcement. “A project of this importance and scale wouldn’t be worth doing without a multi-year roadmap for the future, and we will feel strongly that our retail partners have the first opportunity to look ahead at – and provide valuable feedback on – the battle plan for the revitalized EC line that we’ve built to extend well into the years ahead – doubly so as we prepare to introduce a new generation of readers to the power and intensity of EC with Epitaphs From The Abyss #1 on July 24th. Trust me when I say: the future of EC Comics has many secrets yet to be revealed.”

Oni announced its EC Comics line, created in cooperation with William M. Gaines, Agent, Inc., in February (see “Oni to Launch New EC Comics Line”), and the first titles will be released in July.

  2. are we done here?.....

if so, I would like to thank everyone involved, I learned a lot going step by step, I hope someday a book will come out in more detail explaining all of these threads and expanding on that, and count me in as a preorder.

History as written is always different when you use a microscope....as evidenced here. My opinion:

Stan: excellent promotor and I liked what he did pre FF with Amazing Fantasy and Ditko with that promo style.....did we ever come up with who named the FF "the worlds greatest comic magazine" which gave it a step up from comic book by way!!! that could be Stan also. Editor-wise, what little he did, it o helped a few things, look at for example FF Ann#1 cover, look at reject and the final, I like the final better, also on FF3 reject and FFF52 etc Those were positive changes I would give Stan 25% credit

Kirby/Ditko: 75% is fair......too many great things to even list

    Thoughts?

  3.  it comes down to that It is better than nothing.....with creepy the other imitators they did not have the comic code to deal with and the talent of course was still there.....these new books  also have no code and they are in color, some of the warren stuff was in color, but again, the resources of this company are suspect...art and writing wise compared to DC etc. I say each board member should by at least one issue, read it, put it away and reread a week later and then give the board here your thoughts

  4. Lets give these a chance at least, the art work is not 1/10th of what EC was, but I really think that EC with the best art, the best story....will never be topped. Creepy and Blazing combat gave it a good run....but those artists are long gone. Maybe the story can make up for the artwork.....CU is one I will buy a couple of , since I am a big EC SF fan.....the horror....I will wait for your reviews

You might be right about the rarity and importance of the book but fantastic upside?  My take is Fawcett’s are fools’ gold (that’s why I have so many).

on 99% of the books, yep....as storage wars DAVE would say.Not this....one greatest origin stories ever created, in fact the whole book is great with a large number of  1st appearances on other Fawcett characters. Give it a reread online Thoth....art and story are fantastic. I value the book at 1M.....500K is a STEAL!!!! would I want to own Whiz 2(3) ...nope, I do like a couple of other books like Master #22 the classic cover as well as the classic Capt marvel Jr covers...etc

This book is in a class by itself....remember how many years it took for me to YELL buy Cap #1....again..I am yelling buy this copy only  with WHITE PAGES and strong color strike cover.... it is the bomb!

In my opinion, it is one of the best books ever to come to auction and especially 2024...white pages and 7.0 on an impossible book to get in that condition. A real winner!...With fantastic upside, I know for years I told you get Cap 1...and it sky rocketed in value since...this book is similar!!!!!

Well, I'm not that active in the marketplace these days, so don't really scrutinize sales trends. When I'm seeing artworks I'm not even aware of, never heard of, or even care for going for nutty prices, I can no longer make an informed opinion on such matters!

For me, Ingels will always outshine Craig on Horror covers.  Yes, Craig was responsible for things like the notorious covers you mention, but those are exceptions due to graphic content.

You may well be right about # 1 covers carrying a premium these days, but at the time of the Cochran EC art auctions most collectors were hip to the quality of the art, not the issue number.

agreed, I remember the first EC auction with WS cover going for 1200 and the second going for 1000.

    Greeting fellow fright fans,

Here is more information on the upcoming new EC series from Oni Press with information coming from Previews Catalog 428 May 2024.  Previews provides fans a opportunity to see what is available for preorder at my LCS.  Marvel and DC announcements are no longer found in Previews.  Unlike the olden days of collecting, at least at my LCS, I must preorder the comics and place them on my pull list, otherwise I may miss out.  My LCS can't afford to stockpile comics, since comics are no longer returnable and cost the dealer quite a bit of cash.  Preorders for the first new EC series must be in by May 19 at my LCS to ensure that I get a copy.  There will be at least Ugh :( eight variant covers.  I visit my LCS regularly, at least once a week on new comics day.  Since the internet days, brick and mortar stores are slowing becoming extinct.  Support your LCS.

Lookin Forward to EC Sc-Fi in 2024...cruel universe lookscool. I noticed that the Roger Hill EC collection is up to 293 items so it appears they are still adding books for the auction

What is it you think would break that record?   The Haunt #1 cover?

Haunt #14 is considered one the greatest horror covers ever by Ingles ....there was a separate print made of that many years ago, I think by Russ Cochran, also I talked to Russ about the cover, one his Favs along with WS and the story art to "By George" by Al Williamson.
