He had been living in recent years here in Miami. I saw him twice driving here because of his unmistakable personalized license plate that read, "COMICS".
My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

I went Saturday. Similar observations -- the massive exhibit hall was absolutely packed. Aside from general attendees, there were plenty of buyers hovering around dealer tables -- maybe not the rabid buying frenzy of 2021 and 2022, but deals were being made. I spoke to a few dealers who told me they were very happy with their sales, and a similar sentiment was expressed that the market has stabilized.
If there was one take-away from the first big show of 2024, it was this: there remains an incredible demand from everyday people to escape into the world of comic book mythologies. Massive crowds, tons of cosplayers, families, etc. People having a great time and excited to be there. Which tells me that comic book movie fatigue is a myth. What is real is the expectation from general audiences for good storytelling before they go to the box office. I think once Disney course-corrects and James Gunn rolls out the new DCU with Superman Legacy, we will see another bull market in Silver Age and newer comic books.

When it comes to providing better security measures for slabbed books, I think the book's graded serial number should be etched on all four sides of the inner well. So if say someone were to compromise the outer shell and try to make a swap and re-grade, well cgc can look at the etching and see if it matches the serial number on the label.
If one were to try and remove the book from the inner well, then they would need to cut over the serial number.
Just an idea
A good idea.

Not X-people?
Fantastic Four is in pre-production, they are in the middle of finalizing -script and casting decisions. I suspect the -script and casting choices are being looked at more carefully than before because of the self-made destruction of the MCU post-Endgame. X-Men is still at least another full year (if not longer) away from pre-preproduction, meaning 2 to 3 years until we see an X-men film. Besides FF hopefully saving things, I think whatever James Gunn does over at WB/DC, if he does it right, could re-ignite interest in CBMs.

I was tracking the HOM 194 on HA. Although one example and perhaps an extreme one of dropping prices, the result was expected. The copy that sold in April 2022, despite having white pages, appears to have sold at, arguably, a "Covid-19 Period" price (to, likely, state the very obvious).
Edit: I failed to note that the April 2022 sale is an Oregon Coast Collection copy. I am presently unfamiliar with that collection.
House of Mystery #194 (DC, 1971) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages....
Sold on Mar 28, 2023 for:$264.00 includes Buyer's Premium (BP)
Lot 15404
NM+ 9.6Auction 122216 Monday, April 18, 2022$1,560.00 I love these early BA DC horrors, but $1,560 on a 9.6?? That was lunacy on any metric.

Despite the broader market being flat, i continue to believe that the quality break-down the MCU has experienced with their content in Phase 4 and now 5 has hammered SA and BA Marvels. A lot of viewers have lost interest; reports are that 'Ant-Man 3' is going to lose money. That lost interest has driven a ton of speculators and investors away. I don't see 'GOTG3' or 'the Marvels' doing much to recapture the lost excitement. Looks like it's going to be up to 'Fantastic Four' to save things.
Market projections...sell now or wait it out?

I've been hearing that comic book collecting is dead, and that the hobby will go the way of stamp collecting, for DECADES. No, it won't. Comic books are too cool. With James Gunn (proven track record) running the DCU unit of WB, a lot of excitement in DC films is on the horizon. And then Marvel Studios -- in the middle of a course correction after realizing their frolic-and-detour of 2021 to 2023 cost them literally hundreds of millions of dollars in lost box office revenue and eroded viewer (and comic book collector) goodwill -- will bring out new A-listers from the Fantastic Four and X-Men universes. That will generate even more excitement on the Marvel side.
To the OP, if you don't need the money today, but want to liquidate, consider selling your collection in increments spread out over a five- or 10-year period. It's impossible to time any market, but this way you can hedge some risk while also realizing potential reward with market upswings for Marvel books that, i honestly believe, will come in 2025/2026. Since your portfolio is concentrated in Marvels, you're better off waiting a bit rather than unloading it all now in a soft Marvel market today.
