Did you take part in that thread though? It was actually great entertainment...books were going for several hundred dollars in seconds. I remember Goldust got some nice books but I think he missed out on the 19. It was a nice, nice copy. It was almost a complete run. Issue 40 was conspicuously missing though...and I'm still looking for that one...

There are a few great copies floating around here. Definitely one of the best Atlas PCH covers of any title.

Has its value skyrocketed recently? I know its rare so maybe market demand built to the point he felt he had to sell?

I don't think it will fetch $10K either but there is always a premium on the highest graded copy of a rare book...

That is my old copy. I am the person who had it graded. I sold it to a fellow board member, who has told me many times that if I ever wanted to buy it back, I would get first shot if he decided to sell it. A Gentleman's Agreement if you will. Now here it is on Ebay, for 9400 more than I sold it to him. I don't think po'ed can fully express what I am feeling at this moment.

 

Was that the one from the run sold on here? Those were some awesome books...Mostly purchased from Metropolis Comics, originally I think? If not that was another sharp copy that could give this one a run for its money...

So this book was one of my grail books. It really stood out when a boardie (apologies for forgetting who the particular boardie was) sold a high grade run of most Mystery Tales issues sometime over the past year or two. These books were flying out with most having several :takeit:'s coming through in seconds after being posted. Among all those covers, this one was the coolest to me. I have wanted a copy ever since. The other day, I managed to track down a copy...

The books looks great in hand. What colors! I'm very happy to be a part of this exclusive club. I also saw that one was just posted on ebay with a buy it now of $10,000!

There was no way I would ever come close to a full set of these, but I did like the idea of collecting them, so I went after price variants of titles I liked. I had a handful of 30¢ variants of Thor 250, Cap 200, Marvel Feature 4, Marvel Spotlight 28 and all the Warlock (12-14) 30¢ variants. Recently, I picked up all the Ms. Marvel (6-10) 35¢ variants, so those fit nicely in my run.

If you collect a certain title then find the variant. If you like Spider-Man then look for Spider-Man. If you like X-Men then look for X-Men.

Now don't look for Sgt. Fury if you don't like Sgt. Fury. People think hard-to-find variant books are key but they are not. Grail to some but never key. You will get bored fast and end up listing your hard-to find variants for sale or auction and taking a loss on the time and money you wasted finding them.

I did not mean to sound bitter. My point was to collect what you like and not is the in demand book that others are looking for to complete there set.

I was agreeing with Ball on going for titles you like.

The hunt for these books are fun if you have passion for the books you want.

Why so few Sagas?!?

i don't see the regular 377 bouncing much due to the # of them out there -- except maybe in 9.8 -- but the third print is indeed htf (and the cover is different too), so the thing that keeps many 90s books "down" doesn't afflict that edition (too much product).

 

i have never analyzed the issues much and couldn't tell you what they wrere about now (20 years later), but i do remember that, at the time, i really though they were exceptional. a real bright spot among some of the krapola pumped out in the early 90s both story and art-wise.

 

seems like the 1st print #377 in raw is worth next to nothing due to saturation.

 

Im definitively going to try to buy a 3rd print at Comikazee next month. Its funny that some really want the low print version of 3rd print when probably not many even know that a nearly identical Brazilian edition exists and is zero in CGC.

 

 

 

 

No offense, but people are simply never going to desire foreign printings as much as their US counterparts. It hasn't ever happened and I don't foresee it ever happening. I don't knock people for wanting to collect rare (or not) foreign editions or reprints, but to try to equate the demand for a 377-3rd with a 377-Brazilian is a fool's game.

 

I know my own personal excitement level of foreign comics are somewhere between none and none.

 

 

 

I used to feel same way. But after nearly 30 years of collecting, I found hunting the foreign keys fun and challenging.

I found an Amazing Spider-man 378 at my LCS the other day...$1.80 Aussie variant...I bought it...

I couldn't have been the only one that liked the Pantheon storylines as well could I? I enjoyed the merged Hulk and I really thought PD's best issues were 380 and 420 in my opinion. I think 380 was brilliant and never gets any press.

Seriously though.. being the most collected has good points and bad points. It shows demand. But if tastes change (due to newer versions of the heroes getting popular, or movies etc.) then the much lower number of preserved DC comics will mean that the prices will sky rocket due to the much higher scarcity.

 

Yes, and no. The fact that Marvel is more popular for silver age comics hasn't meant that GA Timely's are worth more due to their relative scarcity to GA DC. Marvel SA will always be the silver age to collect, no matter how popular DC characters become in the future. Just as DC GA comics will be the ones to collect no matter how popular Marvel characters become in the future.

 

This makes me think about Action Comics 252. The introduction (not a reintro) of a major character that is more scarce than comparable Marvel comics character introductions. Why is this book not worth more?!? Like Supergirl v. Ant-man, for example? Shouldn't it be worth more than TTA 27?

Man, that has to be a fluke. A really nice NM is $25-$30. I can't imagine selling a VF for more than $15.

For that price you can buy a decent copy of many 1st appearances which are far more appealing and liquid than a 3rd print of a comic with no discernible story value.

 

One thing I like whenever I see something like this though; there are some collectors with serious money invested in this hobby which gives me hope for the day I decided to part with my collection.

The first print of this book was hot for a long time. That has something to do with why it was reprinted in the first place. Don't say it has no story value. You can feel free to knock it as a non-contemporary reprint but it is nonetheless very rare and, notably for this thread, desirable to many.
